At 9 months old, your baby can eat soft, well-cooked rice served as a mash, a sticky finger food, or mixed into other dishes. Rice is a versatile base for building balanced meals at this stage, but how you prepare and serve it matters for both safety and nutrition.

Best Ways to Prepare Rice

Cook rice until it’s very soft, past the point you’d eat it yourself. A mushy, slightly overcooked texture is ideal because it’s easy to gum and swallow without teeth. You can use white or brown rice. White rice is easier to digest, while brown rice delivers more fiber, iron, magnesium, and B vitamins since it retains the outer bran and germ layers that white rice has been stripped of.
