Insomnia is one of the most common side effects of Adderall, affecting up to 27% of adults in clinical trials. The good news is that a combination of dose timing, evening habits, and a few lesser-known tricks can make a real difference in how quickly you fall asleep and how well you stay asleep.
Why Adderall Makes Sleep So Difficult
Adderall works by increasing levels of stimulating brain chemicals that promote wakefulness, focus, and alertness. The problem is that these same chemicals directly oppose the signals your brain needs to wind down at night. The drug doesn’t just make you “not tired.” It actively suppresses the transition into sleep by keeping your nervous system in a heightened state.

In practical terms, a dinner built around rice, pasta, potatoes, or bread with a moderate amount of plant-based protein (beans, lentils, tofu) is more sleep-friendly than a large steak or chicken breast.
The Vitamin C Trick
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) acidifies your urine, which increases the rate at which your kidneys excrete amphetamine from your body. Taking vitamin C in the evening can help clear the medication from your system faster, shortening its stimulating effects.
A glass of orange juice or a vitamin C supplement with dinner is a simple way to take advantage of this. Just avoid taking vitamin C at the same time as your morning dose, since it will reduce the medication’s effectiveness during the hours you actually need it working.
Build an Evening Wind-Down Routine
Standard sleep hygiene advice matters more when you’re on a stimulant, because your brain needs extra help recognizing that it’s time to sleep. Research on adults with ADHD has identified several strategies that are particularly effective for people on medication.
Morning bright light exposure: This one is counterintuitive since it happens in the morning, not at night. But studies on adults with ADHD found that 30 minutes of bright light therapy in the morning shifted their internal clock earlier, advancing sleep onset by nearly an hour and improving overall sleep quality. Stepping outside into sunlight shortly after waking, or using a light therapy lamp, helps anchor your circadian rhythm so your body is ready for sleep at the right time.
Weighted blankets: A four-week study found that weighted chain blankets significantly reduced insomnia severity compared to regular blankets in people with ADHD. The deep pressure appears to calm the nervous system in a way that counteracts residual stimulant effects.
Screen and light management: Dim the lights in your home at least an hour before bed and cut screen use. This is standard advice, but it’s especially important on Adderall because the stimulant is already suppressing your natural melatonin production. Adding blue light on top of that makes falling asleep considerably harder.

Hand tremors, difficulty speaking clearly, drooping eyelids, and impaired judgment are signs you’ve crossed into a territory where your medication dose or timing needs to be reevaluated. At the extreme end, prolonged sleep deprivation causes hallucinations and an inability to distinguish what’s real from what isn’t.
