Slowing down your metabolism is possible, and your body already knows how to do it. The most powerful lever is reducing how many calories you eat over a sustained period, which can lower your resting metabolic rate by 80 to 120 calories per day beyond what weight loss alone would explain. But metabolism isn’t a single switch you flip. It’s the sum of several processes, and each one responds to different signals from your diet, movement, sleep, and daily habits.

Why Your Body Slows Metabolism on Its Own
Your body treats a slower metabolism as a survival tool. That gap represents genuine metabolic adaptation, not just the natural effect of being smaller.
Eat Fewer Calories Consistently
Sustained calorie restriction is the most well-documented way to lower metabolic rate. In one study, normal-weight people undergoing severe calorie restriction saw their resting metabolic rate drop by about 209 calories per day. This was accompanied by significant decreases in insulin and other metabolic hormones that keep energy expenditure high.
The key word is “sustained.” A single day of eating less won’t trigger meaningful adaptation. Your body needs weeks of consistent under-eating before it begins to recalibrate. The more severe the restriction, the faster and more dramatic the slowdown, but even moderate reductions of 15% below your needs produce measurable effects over months.
Shift Your Diet Toward Fats
Every time you eat, your body spends energy digesting and processing that food. This is called the thermic effect of food, and it varies dramatically by what you eat. Protein costs the most energy to process, increasing your metabolic rate by 15 to 30% of the calories consumed. Carbohydrates require 5 to 10%. Fats require the least, just 0 to 3%.
If your goal is a slower metabolism, shifting your diet away from protein and toward fats means your body uses less energy during digestion. A meal of 500 calories from fat might cost your body only 15 calories to process, while 500 calories from protein could cost 75 to 150 calories. Over the course of a full day, this difference adds up. That said, drastically cutting protein has real trade-offs, including muscle loss, which would further lower your metabolic rate but also reduce strength and physical function.
Move Less Throughout the Day
Formal exercise gets all the attention, but the calories you burn through everyday movement often matter more. Non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT, includes everything from fidgeting and standing to walking to the kitchen and gesturing while you talk. Research from the Mayo Clinic found that NEAT can differ by up to 2,000 calories per day between two people of similar size. That’s an enormous range, and it’s largely driven by habits rather than genetics.
Studies comparing lean and obese sedentary people with similar jobs found that the obese group sat about two and a half hours more per day, while the lean group stood or walked over two hours longer. Sitting more, taking fewer steps, and generally being still will reduce your total daily calorie burn substantially without any changes to your diet or formal exercise routine.
Disrupt Your Sleep Schedule
Your metabolic rate naturally fluctuates across the 24-hour cycle. It’s lowest in the late biological night, around the time your core body temperature hits its lowest point, and highest in the biological afternoon and evening. This built-in rhythm also affects which fuels your body prefers to burn at different times of day.
Disrupting this rhythm, through irregular sleep schedules, shift work, or inconsistent meal timing, appears to reduce metabolic efficiency. Research published in Current Biology found that circadian variation in energy expenditure is actually larger than the metabolic impact of sleep deprivation itself. People with irregular schedules tend to gain weight more easily, in part because their bodies lose the normal peaks in calorie burning that come with a consistent circadian rhythm. If you’re trying to slow metabolism, erratic sleep and eating patterns would work in that direction, though the health costs of chronic sleep disruption are significant.
Meal Timing Doesn’t Matter Much
You may have heard that eating fewer, larger meals slows your metabolism compared to eating many small meals throughout the day. The evidence doesn’t support this. Six controlled trials where adults served as their own controls found no significant changes in body weight from manipulating meal frequency over six to eight weeks. Another six trials lasting up to a year, where free-living adults changed their eating frequency, also found no weight differences attributable to how often they ate.
The total amount you eat matters far more than how you divide it across the day. Switching from six small meals to two large ones won’t meaningfully change your metabolic rate if the calorie total stays the same.
What a Slower Metabolism Actually Feels Like
People often talk about metabolism as a number, but living with a genuinely slower one has noticeable effects. When your body downregulates energy expenditure, you tend to feel colder (since less heat is being produced as a byproduct of metabolism), more fatigued, and less inclined to move. Your body is conserving energy, and that conservation extends to your motivation and body temperature, not just the calories on a spreadsheet.
The hormonal shifts that accompany metabolic slowdown, particularly drops in thyroid hormones and leptin, can also affect mood, concentration, and hunger signals. Your body becomes better at storing energy and more reluctant to spend it, which is exactly what “slower metabolism” means in practice. For people trying to gain weight, this adaptation can actually work against them by reducing appetite at the same time it reduces calorie burn, making it harder to eat enough to build mass.
If you’re pursuing a slower metabolism for longevity reasons, the CALERIE trial offers the most relevant human data: sustained, moderate calorie restriction (around 15% below needs) produced lasting metabolic adaptation alongside reduced markers of oxidative damage over two years. But this level of restriction requires careful nutritional planning to avoid deficiencies, and whether the metabolic slowdown itself extends human lifespan remains an open question.
