The only thing that truly sobers you up is time. Your liver processes roughly one standard drink per hour, and nothing you do will meaningfully speed that up. If you’ve had five drinks, you’re looking at around five hours before your blood alcohol level returns to zero. That said, there are real steps you can take to feel better, stay safe, and avoid making a bad situation worse while you wait.
Why Time Is the Only Real Answer
Your liver breaks down alcohol using a specific enzyme that works at a fixed pace. It converts alcohol into a toxic intermediate compound, then into harmless byproducts (water and carbon dioxide) that your body can eliminate. This process can’t be rushed. The average person clears between .015 and .020 BAC per hour, which means someone at the legal driving limit of .08 needs four to five hours to reach zero.
A backup enzyme system kicks in after heavy drinking, but it only handles a fraction of the workload. The bottleneck is always the primary enzyme, and it operates like a conveyor belt running at one speed regardless of how much alcohol is waiting in line.
What Actually Helps While You Wait
Drink Water
Water won’t flush alcohol out of your system faster, but dehydration makes intoxication worse. When you’re dehydrated, your blood volume drops, which concentrates alcohol in your bloodstream and amplifies its effects on your brain. Research on rehydration and cognitive function found that restoring fluid levels can reduce some of alcohol’s negative effects on thinking and coordination. Alternate sips of water between any remaining drinks, and keep drinking water once you’ve stopped.
Eat Something
Eating after you’re already drunk has limited effects compared to eating before or during drinking. What Doesn’t Work
Coffee and Energy Drinks
This is one of the most persistent myths. An FDA scientific review found that caffeine at various doses had no significant effect on blood alcohol concentration. Zero. What caffeine does is mask the drowsy, sedated feeling that normally tells you how drunk you are. That’s dangerous, not helpful. Studies showed that people who mixed caffeine with alcohol felt less intoxicated but performed just as poorly on tests of coordination and reaction time. Cold Showers
A cold shower will shock you into feeling more alert for a few minutes, but your liver is still processing alcohol at the same fixed rate. There’s also a real risk: alcohol lowers your body temperature and impairs your balance. A cold shower can cause a dangerous drop in core temperature or a fall. It’s not worth it.
Exercise
Sweating doesn’t remove meaningful amounts of alcohol from your body. Alcohol leaves primarily through liver metabolism, not through your skin. Vigorous exercise while drunk increases your risk of injury, dehydration, and heart strain.
Vomiting
If your body makes you vomit, don’t fight it. But intentionally forcing yourself to throw up won’t sober you up. Alcohol enters your bloodstream within minutes of reaching your stomach. By the time you feel drunk, most of the alcohol is already in your blood, not sitting in your stomach waiting to be removed.
One Ingredient That Might Actually Help
Fructose, the sugar found naturally in fruit and honey, is the one substance with real evidence behind it. Lab studies have shown that fructose can increase the rate of alcohol breakdown by over 50% in liver cells. It works by helping recycle a molecule that the liver’s primary alcohol-processing enzyme needs to function. This effect has been replicated across multiple studies.
The catch: most of this evidence comes from cell and animal studies. The practical effect in a living, breathing human drinking at a party is likely more modest. Eating fruit or having some honey in water certainly won’t hurt, and it provides hydration and blood sugar support at the same time. It’s one of the few things with any biological basis for speeding up the process, even slightly.
How to Estimate When You’ll Be Sober
Count your standard drinks. One standard drink equals 12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor. Each one takes roughly an hour to clear. If you had six drinks between 8 p.m. and midnight, your liver started processing from your first sip, but you likely won’t be at zero until 4 to 6 a.m. at the earliest.
Body weight, sex, genetics, and liver health all affect this timeline. Women generally metabolize alcohol more slowly than men at the same body weight. People of East Asian descent often have genetic variations in the enzymes that process alcohol, which can change both how fast they clear it and how sick they feel in the process. Signs You Need Emergency Help
There’s a line between being drunk and being in danger. Alcohol overdose kills by suppressing the parts of your brain that control breathing and heart rate. Call emergency services immediately if you or someone else shows any of these signs:
