How to Stop Excessive Sweating All Over Your Body

Excessive sweating across your entire body, known medically as generalized hyperhidrosis, is treatable through a combination of lifestyle changes, topical products, and oral medications. The approach depends on whether the sweating is a condition on its own or a symptom of something else. Most people can significantly reduce whole-body sweating once they identify the right combination of strategies.

Rule Out an Underlying Cause First

Sweating that affects your whole body rather than just your palms, feet, or underarms is more likely to have an underlying medical trigger. This is called secondary generalized hyperhidrosis, and treating the root cause often resolves the sweating entirely. Conditions linked to full-body sweating include hyperthyroidism, diabetes, heart failure, infections like tuberculosis, anxiety disorders, menopause, obesity, Parkinson’s disease, and certain cancers.

Drug-induced hyperhidrosis is actually the most common cause of secondary sweating. Several widely prescribed medication classes can trigger it. Antidepressants are among the biggest culprits: SSRIs, SNRIs, and tricyclic antidepressants all affect brain chemistry in ways that ramp up sweat production. Venlafaxine alone accounts for more hyperhidrosis reports than any other single medication. Opioid painkillers (codeine, tramadol, oxycodone), ADHD medications like methylphenidate, thyroid replacement drugs, and steroid medications like prednisone can all cause generalized sweating too. If your sweating started or worsened after beginning a new medication, that connection is worth investigating with your prescriber. Switching to an alternative drug in the same class sometimes eliminates the problem.

When Sweating Is a Warning Sign

Most whole-body sweating is uncomfortable but not dangerous. However, certain patterns warrant prompt medical attention. Night sweats combined with unintentional weight loss of more than 5% over six to twelve months, unexplained fevers, easy bruising, persistent fatigue, or swollen lymph nodes can signal malignancy or serious infection. Swollen lymph nodes that persist for more than four to six weeks alongside night sweats are particularly concerning and should not be dismissed.

Start With Lifestyle and Clothing Changes

Before reaching for medications, practical adjustments can meaningfully reduce how much you sweat and how much it disrupts your life. Wear loose-fitting clothes made from cotton or moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics designed to pull sweat away from your skin. Tight clothing traps heat and makes sweating worse. Darker colors hide sweat stains, which helps with the social anxiety that often accompanies the condition.

Showering at least once daily, and again after exercise or heavy sweating, keeps skin bacteria in check and reduces odor. For your feet, moisture-wicking socks and breathable leather shoes (or open-toed designs when possible) help manage plantar sweating. Underarm pads worn inside clothing can absorb sweat before it reaches your outer layer. These steps won’t cure hyperhidrosis, but they reduce its visibility and discomfort while you pursue more targeted treatments.

Antiperspirants: The First-Line Treatment

For whole-body sweating, the first medical step is a topical aluminum chloride antiperspirant. Over-the-counter versions are a reasonable starting point, but prescription-strength formulations contain higher concentrations of aluminum chloride that physically block sweat glands more effectively. These can be applied to the underarms, chest, back, and other sweating-prone areas.

The key to getting results is proper application. Apply to clean, completely dry skin at bedtime, not in the morning. Overnight application gives the active ingredient time to form plugs in the sweat ducts while your glands are least active. In the morning, you can wash the area and apply a regular deodorant on top if needed. Clinical guidelines recommend trying this approach for at least six weeks before concluding it isn’t working. Some people experience skin irritation, which can be managed by applying less frequently (every other night) or using a mild hydrocortisone cream afterward.

Oral Medications for Whole-Body Sweating

When antiperspirants aren’t enough, oral medications become the main option for generalized sweating, since treatments like Botox injections and iontophoresis only target specific body areas. Anticholinergic drugs work by blocking the chemical messenger that tells your sweat glands to activate. Oxybutynin is the most commonly prescribed option for hyperhidrosis in both adults and children, though it’s used off-label for this purpose. Glycopyrrolate is another option, with doses that are gradually increased over several weeks to find the lowest effective amount.

These medications reduce sweating across the entire body, which is exactly what makes them useful for generalized hyperhidrosis. The tradeoff is that they also reduce moisture in other places: dry mouth is the most common side effect, and blurred vision, constipation, and difficulty urinating can occur. Starting at a low dose and increasing slowly helps minimize these effects. Many people find a dose that meaningfully reduces sweating without intolerable dryness.

Propantheline bromide is another anticholinergic option and is actually licensed specifically for generalized hyperhidrosis in some countries, making it a first-choice prescription in those settings.

Newer Topical Prescription Options

The FDA recently approved a topical gel (brand name Sofdra) that works as an anticholinergic applied directly to the skin rather than taken as a pill. In clinical trials involving over 700 patients, 49% to 64% of people using the active treatment achieved a meaningful improvement in sweating severity within about six weeks, compared to 29% to 48% on placebo. It’s currently approved for underarm sweating specifically, not full-body use, but it represents a growing category of topical options that may expand over time.

The localized application doesn’t entirely avoid systemic side effects, though. In trials, 14% of users experienced dry mouth, 9% had blurred vision, and 7% developed dilated pupils. Skin reactions at the application site, including pain, redness, and irritation, affected roughly 5% to 8% of users.

Building a Treatment Plan That Works

Managing whole-body sweating usually requires layering multiple approaches rather than relying on a single fix. A practical starting sequence: identify and address any underlying medical cause or medication trigger, adopt clothing and hygiene strategies that minimize daily impact, try prescription-strength antiperspirants on your worst areas for at least six weeks, and move to oral anticholinergic medication if topical treatment alone isn’t sufficient.

Keep in mind that sweating intensity fluctuates with stress, temperature, hormonal shifts, and fitness level. What works in winter may need adjustment in summer. Some people use oral medications only during warmer months or high-stakes social situations rather than year-round. Tracking your triggers, whether that’s caffeine, spicy food, anxiety, or heat, gives you additional leverage. Reducing even one major trigger can shift your sweating from unmanageable to tolerable while medical treatments handle the rest.
