Feeling shaky and weak at the same time usually points to something your body needs right now: food, water, rest, or a break from stress. In most cases, the fix is straightforward once you identify the trigger. The most common culprits are low blood sugar, dehydration, anxiety, caffeine, poor sleep, and medication side effects.
Low Blood Sugar Is the Most Common Cause
Blood sugar below 70 mg/dL triggers a cascade of symptoms that feel unmistakable: shaking hands, sudden weakness, sweating, dizziness, and a wave of hunger that feels almost urgent. Your brain runs almost entirely on glucose, so when levels drop, your body sounds every alarm it has. Below 54 mg/dL, symptoms become more serious, including confusion, trouble walking, and blurred vision.
You don’t need to have diabetes for this to happen. Skipping meals, exercising on an empty stomach, drinking alcohol without food, or eating a high-sugar meal that causes a rapid spike followed by a crash can all push your blood sugar too low. If you’re shaky and weak and you haven’t eaten in several hours, low blood sugar is the first thing to address.

Caffeine is a well-documented cause of tremor. Research has shown that caffeine at about 3 milligrams per kilogram of body weight significantly increases physiological tremor in healthy adults. For a 150-pound person, that’s roughly 200 milligrams, or about two standard cups of coffee. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, the threshold may be lower. Energy drinks, pre-workout supplements, some teas, and even chocolate add up faster than expected.
The shakiness from caffeine tends to come with a racing heart, restlessness, and sometimes an anxious edge. Metabolic conditions like thyroid disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, and low calcium or magnesium levels can all produce chronic shakiness. These are identified through routine blood work. If your symptoms keep coming back despite eating well, sleeping enough, and managing stress, a blood panel can rule these out quickly.
Seek immediate care if shakiness comes with loss of consciousness, sudden confusion, slurred speech, weakness on one side of the body, seizures, or a severe headache with dizziness. These combinations can indicate stroke, dangerously low blood sugar, or other emergencies where timing matters.
