How to Stop Night Sweats Caused by Antidepressants

Antidepressant-induced night sweats are one of the most common and persistent side effects of these medications, and there are several practical strategies to reduce or eliminate them. The options range from simple bedroom adjustments to medication changes, and the right approach depends on how severe your sweating is and how well your current antidepressant is working for you.

Why Antidepressants Cause Night Sweats

Most antidepressants interfere with your body’s temperature regulation system. Your brain has a thermostat-like region that controls sweating, and two chemical messengers play a role in disrupting it: serotonin and norepinephrine. Serotonin acts on specific receptors in that brain region to trigger sweating, while norepinephrine (the same chemical behind your fight-or-flight response) activates sweat glands more directly. Medications that boost either of these chemicals can push your body’s cooling system into overdrive, especially at night when your body is already cycling through natural temperature dips.

This isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you or that your medication isn’t working for its intended purpose. It’s a straightforward pharmacological side effect. Unfortunately, it tends to persist for as long as you take the medication rather than fading after a few weeks like some other side effects do.

Which Antidepressants Are Most Likely to Cause It

A meta-analysis of 76 trials involving over 28,500 people found that nearly all second-generation antidepressants carry a significantly increased risk of excessive sweating compared to placebo. Both SSRIs and SNRIs roughly tripled the risk. Medications with stronger norepinephrine effects, like venlafaxine, have a particularly high propensity for causing sweating.

Interestingly, three antidepressants did not show a statistically significant increase in sweating risk: fluvoxamine, bupropion, and vortioxetine. The same meta-analysis found that the dose of the medication didn’t significantly change the risk, meaning even lower doses can cause the problem. The sweating risk was most closely tied to how strongly a given drug binds to the dopamine transporter, which adds another layer to the mechanism beyond serotonin and norepinephrine alone.

Adjust Your Sleep Environment First

Before making any medication changes, optimizing your bedroom can meaningfully reduce how much night sweats disrupt your sleep. The goal is to make it easier for your body to shed heat so that even if your thermostat is set a little high by your medication, the sweating doesn’t wake you up or soak your sheets.

Keep your bedroom temperature between 15 and 19°C (60 to 67°F). Use breathable, moisture-wicking sheets and sleepwear made from materials like bamboo, Tencel, or performance fabrics designed to pull moisture away from skin. Avoid heavy comforters, and consider layering lighter blankets you can kick off easily.

Temperature-controlled mattress covers are a more advanced option. These systems circulate water through a thin mat on your mattress and can be set as cool as 13°C (55°F). Research on one such product found that sleeping on a temperature-regulated surface for just one week improved sleep quality. These covers let you program different temperatures for different phases of the night, which is useful because your body’s core temperature naturally drops in the early hours of sleep and rises toward morning. Matching your bed’s cooling to that rhythm can help compensate for the thermoregulation disruption your medication causes.

Talk to Your Prescriber About Medication Adjustments

If environmental changes aren’t enough, the next step is a conversation with whoever prescribes your antidepressant. There are several medication-based strategies worth discussing.

Switching to a Lower-Risk Antidepressant

If your current antidepressant is otherwise working well but the sweating is intolerable, switching to one of the lower-risk options (fluvoxamine, bupropion, or vortioxetine) may solve the problem. This isn’t always straightforward. Not every antidepressant works equally well for every person, and switching involves a transition period. But if you’re on a high-risk medication like venlafaxine or sertraline, knowing that alternatives with lower sweating risk exist gives you and your prescriber something concrete to work with.

Changing When You Take Your Dose

If you currently take your antidepressant in the evening, moving it to the morning may reduce nighttime sweating. The drug’s peak blood levels will occur during the day rather than while you’re sleeping. This is a simple change with minimal downside, though it doesn’t work for everyone and depends on the specific medication’s duration in your body.

Adding a Medication to Counteract the Sweating

Your prescriber can also add a second medication specifically to block the sweating response. Several options exist. Cyproheptadine, which blocks serotonin receptors in the brain’s temperature control center, has been shown to reduce antidepressant-induced sweating. Benztropine, which blocks a different chemical messenger involved in sweat gland activation, is another option that can be taken on an as-needed basis. Oxybutynin, a medication that reduces the chemical signals to sweat glands throughout the body, has been studied specifically for this purpose in people taking sertraline.

Each of these add-on medications has its own side effects, most commonly dry mouth, so the decision involves weighing one side effect against another. But for people whose antidepressant is working well and who don’t want to switch, this approach lets you keep your current medication while targeting the sweating directly.

Vitamin E as an Over-the-Counter Option

One option you can try without a prescription is vitamin E. The rationale comes from research showing vitamin E reduces hot flashes in postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors, and the sweating mechanism overlaps with antidepressant-induced sweating.

In a documented clinical case, a patient taking an antidepressant started 200 IU (134 mg) of vitamin E daily in the d-alpha-tocopherol form. She reported improvement within one week, and after three months her sweating episodes had dropped to just one or two days per week, with nighttime awakenings only a few times per month. She reported no side effects.

This is a single case rather than a large trial, so results will vary. Vitamin E does carry some risks at higher doses, including a potential increase in bleeding, so it’s worth mentioning to your prescriber if you’re on blood thinners. Stick to the 200 IU dose rather than megadosing, as excessive vitamin E intake has been linked to increased mortality in some studies.

Rule Out Other Causes

It’s reasonable to assume your antidepressant is the culprit, especially if the sweating started shortly after beginning or increasing your dose. But night sweats can also signal other conditions that shouldn’t be ignored. Unexplained weight loss, recurring fevers, or swollen lymph nodes alongside night sweats raise the possibility of infection or, less commonly, lymphoma. If you have any of those additional symptoms, or if your night sweats started well after your medication was stable, it’s worth getting a broader evaluation rather than assuming the antidepressant is entirely to blame.
