Allergies or a Cold: Which One You Have Matters

Allergies and colds both cause sneezing and a runny nose, so the overlap can be confusing. A few symptoms make the distinction clear. Itchy, watery eyes almost always point to allergies and rarely show up with a cold. A sore throat and cough are the opposite: common with colds, unusual with allergies. A fever, even a low one, rules out allergies entirely. And if you notice puffy eyelids or dark circles under your eyes, that’s a classic allergy sign.

If your sneezing and runny nose are a daily problem, especially during allergy season, an over-the-counter nasal corticosteroid spray is more effective than antihistamines alone. Fluticasone (Flonase) and triamcinolone (Nasacort) are both available without a prescription. They work by calming the broader inflammatory response in your nasal passages, not just blocking histamine.

The catch is timing. You may notice some relief within 12 hours of your first dose, but full benefit typically takes 3 to 7 days of consistent daily use. These sprays aren’t meant for occasional, as-needed use the way antihistamines are. Start them before your worst allergy season hits, and use them every day for the duration. They don’t address those symptoms.

Water safety matters here. The CDC recommends using only water that is labeled “distilled” or “sterile,” or tap water that you’ve boiled at a rolling boil for at least one minute (three minutes at elevations above 6,500 feet) and then cooled. Staying hydrated keeps nasal secretions thinner and easier to clear. Warm liquids like tea or broth can be especially soothing. Elevating your head while sleeping, using an extra pillow, helps mucus drain rather than pooling and triggering sneezing fits in the morning.

If dry indoor air is irritating your nose, a humidifier can help, but keep the humidity between 30% and 50%. Higher levels encourage dust mites and mold growth, which will make allergy-related symptoms worse.

Reducing Allergen Exposure at Home

If allergies are the root cause, reducing your exposure to triggers can cut symptoms significantly without medication.
