Stress-related hair loss is reversible in most cases, and the single most important step is addressing the underlying stress itself. The condition, called telogen effluvium, happens when your body’s stress hormone pushes a large number of hair follicles into a resting phase all at once. Most people recover fully within six to eight months once the stressor is managed, but there are specific things you can do to support that process and avoid making it worse.
Why Stress Makes Your Hair Fall Out
Under chronic stress, your adrenal glands ramp up production of cortisol. Research from the Harvard Stem Cell Institute found that cortisol doesn’t act on hair follicles directly. Instead, it targets a cluster of cells beneath the follicle called the dermal papilla, preventing those cells from releasing a signaling molecule that activates hair follicle stem cells. This looks very different from autoimmune hair loss (alopecia areata), which causes sudden, coin-sized smooth patches. If you’re seeing distinct bald spots rather than overall thinning, or if your scalp burns, stings, itches intensely, or shows scaly patches with sores, something other than stress is likely involved and warrants a dermatologist visit.
Address the Root Cause First
No supplement or topical product will override ongoing chronic stress. If cortisol stays elevated, it will continue suppressing the signal your hair follicles need to re-enter the growth cycle. The most effective intervention is reducing whatever is driving your stress response.
That can mean different things for different people. For some, the trigger is a discrete event like surgery, a high fever, or childbirth, and the body resolves it on its own. For others, the stress is ongoing: work pressure, financial strain, a difficult relationship, sleep deprivation. In those cases, actively managing stress through exercise, therapy, sleep improvement, or changes to your circumstances is what actually moves the needle. The hair recovery follows the cortisol reduction, not the other way around.
Practical Steps That Support Regrowth
Lower Your Cortisol
Regular aerobic exercise is one of the most reliable ways to lower baseline cortisol levels. Even 30 minutes of moderate activity like brisk walking or cycling several times a week makes a measurable difference. Sleep is equally important: chronic sleep deprivation keeps cortisol elevated regardless of what else you do. Aim for consistent sleep and wake times, and prioritize getting seven to eight hours.
Mindfulness practices like meditation and deep breathing exercises have documented effects on cortisol. You don’t need to commit to an hour a day. Even 10 to 15 minutes of focused breathing can lower your stress hormone levels in the short term, and the benefits accumulate with consistent practice.
Check Your Nutrient Levels
Nutritional deficiencies can worsen or mimic stress-related hair loss. Iron and vitamin D are the two most commonly implicated. Women of childbearing age are especially vulnerable to low iron stores. In studies of women with diffuse hair loss, ferritin (your body’s iron storage marker) levels averaged around 22 ng/mL, and vitamin D levels averaged about 20 IU/dL, both on the low side. If you suspect your diet isn’t covering these bases, a simple blood test can confirm whether supplementation would help.
Biotin is heavily marketed for hair growth, but the evidence doesn’t support it for people who aren’t actually deficient. A review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology concluded that no studies have demonstrated biotin supplementation benefits hair growth in healthy individuals with sufficient biotin levels. Unless you have a diagnosed deficiency or a specific condition that impairs biotin absorption, spending money on biotin supplements is unlikely to make a difference.
Be Gentle With Your Hair
While your hair is in a shedding phase, minimize physical stress on your follicles. Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the scalp, like high ponytails and braids. Reduce heat styling, and skip chemical treatments like bleaching or perming until the shedding phase passes. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair instead of a brush. None of this will speed up regrowth, but it prevents additional breakage that makes thinning look worse than it is.
Consider Targeted Supplements Carefully
Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb, has shown some promise for stress-related hair concerns. It contains compounds that can interact with steroid receptors and modulate cortisol levels. A randomized, double-blind study found that daily ashwagandha supplementation significantly reduced cortisol in chronically stressed adults. The logic is straightforward: if the problem is elevated cortisol suppressing hair growth signals, lowering cortisol should help. That said, ashwagandha works best as one piece of a broader stress management strategy, not a standalone fix.
What the Recovery Timeline Looks Like
Once you address the cause, shedding typically continues for three to six months before tapering off. This is the hardest part psychologically, because you’re doing the right things but still losing hair. Understanding this timeline helps. The hairs that were pushed into the resting phase two to three months ago are still completing that cycle. You can’t pull them back into the growth phase; you can only ensure the next cycle starts on time.
After the shedding period ends, you’ll begin noticing short new hairs growing in the affected areas. Full recovery, meaning your hair returns to its previous density, generally takes six to eight months from when the underlying cause is resolved. For some people it takes up to a year. The regrowth comes in at your normal hair texture and color, so the new hairs may initially look slightly different simply because they’re shorter than the rest.
If shedding continues beyond six months without improvement, or if the pattern changes from diffuse thinning to patchy loss, that suggests something beyond a simple stress response. Thyroid imbalances, hormonal shifts, and other medical conditions can produce similar shedding patterns and may need specific treatment.
