Nighttime sweating usually comes down to one of two things: your sleep environment is too warm, or something internal is triggering your body’s sweat response. The fix depends on which category you fall into, but in either case, keeping your bedroom between 60 and 67°F (15 to 19°C) is the single most effective starting point. Beyond that, the right bedding, clothing, and a few targeted habits can make a significant difference.
Why You Sweat in Your Sleep
Your body temperature naturally dips at night as part of your sleep cycle. When something prevents that cooldown, whether it’s a thick comforter, a warm room, or an internal process like hormone fluctuations, your body compensates by sweating. This is the same cooling mechanism you’d experience during exercise, just triggered at the wrong time.
There’s a meaningful difference between waking up warm and experiencing true night sweats. Overheating from your environment resolves when you change the environment. Night sweats, on the other hand, can drench your sheets regardless of room temperature and often signal something physiological: menopause, medication side effects, low blood sugar, infections, or other medical conditions. If your sweating happens regularly, interrupts your sleep, or comes with fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain, that pattern points toward a medical cause worth investigating.
Set Your Bedroom Temperature Right
If your bedroom is above 70°F, it’s too hot for quality sleep. The Cleveland Clinic recommends keeping the room between 60 and 67°F. This range supports your body’s natural temperature drop and reduces the need for your sweat glands to kick in. A programmable thermostat set to cool the room before bedtime helps, but a fan pointed toward the bed works too if air conditioning isn’t an option.
Humidity matters as much as temperature. Sweat can’t evaporate efficiently in humid air, so even a cool room can feel sticky if moisture levels are high. A dehumidifier or opening a window on dry nights can help your body’s cooling system work the way it’s supposed to.
Choose the Right Bedding and Sleepwear
Your mattress, sheets, and pajamas trap more heat than most people realize. Memory foam mattresses in particular retain body heat because the dense material doesn’t allow much airflow. If replacing your mattress isn’t realistic, a cooling mattress pad can help. Water-based cooling systems circulate temperature-controlled water through a thin pad and can cool the sleep surface down to 55°F. Water conducts heat roughly 25 times better than air, so these systems pull warmth away from your body far more effectively than fan-based alternatives, which tend to cool unevenly.
For sheets, look for materials that breathe: cotton percale, linen, or bamboo-derived fabrics. Sateen and polyester blends trap heat. The same principle applies to what you wear to bed. Lightweight, loose-fitting cotton or moisture-wicking athletic fabric lets sweat evaporate rather than pooling against your skin. Some people sleep cooler with nothing on at all, though a light layer can actually help wick moisture away from the body more efficiently than bare skin on sheets.
Medications That Cause Night Sweats
Several common medications trigger sweating during sleep. Antidepressants are among the most frequent culprits. Hormone therapy, drugs used to treat opioid use disorder (such as methadone), and medications that lower blood sugar in people with diabetes can all do the same. If your night sweats started or worsened around the time you began a new medication, that timing is worth noting for your provider. Adjusting the dose or switching to an alternative often resolves the problem.
For people with diabetes specifically, nighttime sweating can be a sign of nocturnal hypoglycemia, which occurs when blood sugar drops below 70 mg/dL during sleep. Hot, clammy skin is one of the hallmark symptoms. If you notice this alongside morning headaches, restless sleep, or feeling unusually tired upon waking, checking your blood sugar levels before bed and discussing your medication timing with your doctor can help prevent these episodes.
Menopause and Hormonal Night Sweats
Hot flashes and night sweats affect the majority of women going through menopause, sometimes for years. These episodes are driven by changes in how the brain regulates temperature as estrogen levels shift. While hormone therapy is the most effective treatment, it’s not appropriate for everyone, and several non-hormonal options have solid evidence behind them.
Certain antidepressants, including paroxetine, escitalopram, venlafaxine, and desvenlafaxine, reduce hot flash frequency by 24% to 69% in clinical trials. A newer medication called fezolinetant, which works on a different brain pathway, reduced hot flash frequency by 93% over 12 weeks in trials, with effects starting within the first week. Cognitive behavioral therapy, both in groups and self-guided, has also shown improvements in how bothersome hot flashes feel and how much they interfere with daily life. Clinical hypnosis, tested in two separate five-week trials, reduced both the severity and frequency of symptoms while also improving mood and sleep quality.
Weight loss earlier in the menopause transition has been shown in randomized trials to reduce symptoms as well. This doesn’t require dramatic changes. Even moderate weight loss appears to help the body regulate temperature more effectively during this period.
Habits That Reduce Nighttime Sweating
What you do in the hours before bed directly affects how much you sweat overnight. Alcohol, spicy food, caffeine, and hot beverages all raise core body temperature or stimulate your nervous system in ways that increase sweating. Eating a large meal close to bedtime has a similar effect because digestion generates heat. Shifting your last meal to at least two to three hours before bed gives your body time to cool down.
A warm shower or bath 60 to 90 minutes before sleep sounds counterintuitive but actually helps. It brings blood to the surface of your skin, and when you step out into cooler air, your body releases that heat rapidly, dropping your core temperature faster than it would otherwise. This primes your body for the natural temperature dip that initiates sleep.
Exercise is similar. Regular physical activity improves temperature regulation over time, but working out too close to bedtime can leave your core temperature elevated for hours. Morning or afternoon workouts give your body the full benefit without the nighttime heat.
Antiperspirant Works Better at Night
If you sweat heavily in specific areas like your chest, back, or underarms during sleep, clinical-strength antiperspirant applied at bedtime is more effective than the same product applied in the morning. Your sweat rate follows a daily cycle, peaking around 6 PM and reaching its lowest point during the night. Applying antiperspirant when your sweat glands are least active gives the active ingredients time to form a deeper plug in the sweat ducts. Studies comparing morning versus nighttime application found that evening application was significantly more effective at every measurement point. Applying both morning and night provided an even greater benefit over the typical once-in-the-morning routine.
Apply it to completely dry skin for best results. If you shower before bed, wait until your skin is fully dry. The antiperspirant will stay effective through the next day even after a morning shower, since it works inside the sweat duct rather than sitting on the skin’s surface.
