How to Stop Teeth From Decaying and Reverse Cavities

Tooth decay is preventable. It happens when acids produced by bacteria in your mouth dissolve the minerals in your enamel faster than your saliva can replace them. That process kicks in every time the pH in your mouth drops below about 5.5, which occurs after eating or drinking anything sugary or acidic. Stopping decay comes down to tipping that balance back in favor of your teeth, through what you eat, how you clean, and a few protective tools most people underuse.

Why Teeth Decay in the First Place

Your mouth is home to hundreds of bacterial species. Some of them feed on sugars and starches left on your teeth and produce acid as a byproduct. When that acid pushes the pH at the tooth surface below 5.5, minerals like calcium and phosphate start leaching out of your enamel. This is called demineralization, and it’s the earliest stage of a cavity.

The good news: your saliva is constantly working to reverse this. It neutralizes acid, raises the pH back toward 7.0, and carries dissolved calcium and phosphate back into weakened enamel. This repair process, remineralization, happens naturally between meals. Decay only gets a foothold when demineralization outpaces remineralization over days, weeks, and months. Every strategy below works by shifting that balance.

Cut Sugar Frequency, Not Just Amount

The World Health Organization recommends keeping free sugars below 10% of your total daily calories, and ideally below 5%, to minimize cavity risk throughout life. For an average adult diet, 5% works out to roughly 25 grams, or about six teaspoons.

But frequency matters even more than quantity. Every time sugar enters your mouth, bacteria produce acid for roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Sipping a sugary coffee over two hours creates a near-continuous acid bath. Drinking it in ten minutes gives your saliva time to recover. The same total sugar does far less damage when consumed in fewer sittings. This applies to fruit juice, sports drinks, honey, dried fruit, and anything with added sugars.

Brush Smarter, Not Harder

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is the single most effective thing you can do at home. Standard over-the-counter toothpastes contain between 1,000 and 1,500 ppm of fluoride, which is enough to strengthen enamel and inhibit bacterial acid production. If you’re at higher risk for cavities, your dentist can prescribe a toothpaste with 5,000 ppm fluoride for stronger protection.

Timing matters more than most people realize. After eating or drinking something acidic (citrus, vinegar-based dressings, wine, sparkling water), your enamel is temporarily softened. Brushing right away can actually scrub off that softened layer. Wait 30 to 60 minutes before brushing so your saliva has time to re-harden the surface. If you want to freshen up immediately after an acidic meal, rinsing with plain water is a better option.

Use a soft-bristled brush and gentle pressure. Aggressive scrubbing wears down enamel and gum tissue over time, which creates new surfaces vulnerable to decay. Two minutes of methodical, gentle brushing covers every surface far better than 45 seconds of forceful back-and-forth.

Don’t Skip Flossing

Brushing only reaches about 60% of your tooth surfaces. The tight spaces between teeth are prime real estate for decay because food debris and bacteria collect there undisturbed. Floss, interdental brushes, or water flossers can reach these areas. The best tool is whichever one you’ll actually use every day. Once daily is enough.

Fluoride: Your Enamel’s Best Ally

Fluoride works by chemically altering enamel crystals, making them harder and more resistant to acid attacks. It also helps pull calcium and phosphate back into weakened spots, accelerating the natural repair process your saliva already performs.

You get fluoride from multiple sources. Most public water systems add it at 0.7 ppm. Your toothpaste delivers it directly to the tooth surface twice a day. For people with active decay or high risk, dentists can apply professional-strength fluoride varnish (22,600 ppm) during routine visits. This concentrated treatment creates a reservoir of fluoride on the tooth that releases slowly over hours. For children under six, fluoride varnish is the only professional fluoride treatment recommended, since younger kids are more likely to swallow gels or rinses.

Nano-Hydroxyapatite: A Fluoride Alternative

Nano-hydroxyapatite is a synthetic version of the mineral that makes up most of your enamel. Instead of changing enamel’s chemical structure the way fluoride does, it fills in and rebuilds weak areas directly on the tooth surface. It’s particularly effective for tooth sensitivity because it physically seals exposed enamel and the layer beneath it.

Fluoride still has the stronger long-term evidence for cavity prevention, especially in children at high risk. But nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste is a reasonable option if you prefer a fluoride-free product or want to layer both approaches. Some people use a nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste in the morning and a fluoride toothpaste at night.

Dental Sealants for Back Teeth

Nine out of ten cavities form in the back teeth, where deep grooves and pits trap food and bacteria that brushing can’t fully reach. Dental sealants are thin coatings painted into those grooves that create a smooth, sealed surface. They prevent 80% of cavities in back teeth over two years, according to the CDC. The application is quick, painless, and doesn’t require any drilling.

Sealants are most commonly placed on children’s permanent molars as they come in, typically around ages 6 and 12. But adults with deep grooves and no existing fillings in those teeth can benefit too. They last several years before needing reapplication.

Xylitol Gum and Mints

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that cavity-causing bacteria can’t use for fuel. When these bacteria take in xylitol instead of regular sugar, they produce far less acid and their populations shrink over time. Studies show a 30 to 80 percent decrease in new cavities with regular xylitol use.

The catch is dosing. You need 5 to 10 grams per day, spread across three to five times daily (typically after meals), to see a real benefit. Anything less than about 3.5 grams per day shows no protective effect. Check the label on xylitol gum or mints to see how many grams each piece contains, then do the math. Xylitol should also be listed as the first ingredient, not buried behind other sweeteners.

Stopping Decay That’s Already Started

If you have early-stage decay (white spots on enamel, or small cavities that haven’t reached the nerve), it doesn’t always mean a filling. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid applied to the tooth that can stop existing cavities from progressing. It’s noninvasive, takes seconds to apply, and costs a fraction of a traditional filling. Research shows it prevents root cavities in adults at rates 72% higher than placebo, and it’s as effective as traditional restorative treatment at halting decay in the tooth’s inner layer.

The main drawback is cosmetic: SDF permanently stains decayed areas black. On back teeth or baby teeth, that’s often an acceptable tradeoff. For visible front teeth, most people prefer a traditional restoration. Your dentist can help you weigh the options based on where the cavity is and how quickly it’s progressing.

Daily Habits That Protect Your Teeth

Beyond brushing and flossing, a few simple habits make a measurable difference:

  • Drink water throughout the day. It rinses away food particles and helps maintain a neutral pH. Tap water with fluoride adds an extra layer of protection.
  • Finish meals with cheese or milk. Dairy raises the pH in your mouth and delivers calcium directly to the tooth surface.
  • Chew sugar-free gum after meals. It stimulates saliva flow, which speeds up remineralization. Xylitol-sweetened gum doubles the benefit.
  • Limit snacking between meals. Every snack restarts the acid cycle. Three meals with defined gaps give your saliva hours of uninterrupted repair time.
  • Address dry mouth. Saliva is your primary defense against decay. Medications, mouth breathing, and certain medical conditions can reduce saliva flow dramatically. If your mouth frequently feels dry, talk to your dentist about saliva substitutes or stimulants.

Decay is a slow process. It takes months of repeated acid attacks for a cavity to form. That same timeline works in your favor: consistent daily habits compound over weeks and months, giving your teeth the chance to repair what earlier damage started.
