Medical misinformation is one of the biggest threats to your health that doesn’t come from an actual disease. False health claims spread faster than accurate ones, with one major study finding that false news stories were 70% more likely to be shared on social media than true stories. The good news: you don’t need a medical degree to protect yourself. You need a handful of practical skills that, once learned, become second nature.
Why Your Brain Works Against You
Before you can defend against bad health information, it helps to understand why it’s so effective in the first place. The answer isn’t that people are gullible. It’s that human brains are wired with shortcuts that misinformation exploits.
Confirmation bias is the biggest one. You naturally seek out and interpret information in ways that match what you already believe. If you’re skeptical of a particular treatment, you’ll gravitate toward stories that confirm your skepticism, regardless of the evidence. This works in every direction, affecting people across all education levels and political affiliations.
Then there’s the illusory truth effect: the more you hear something, the more accurate it feels. Repetition makes your brain process a claim more smoothly, and that fluency gets mistaken for truth. This is why health myths that circulate for years become so deeply embedded. The fraudulent claim linking vaccines to autism, for example, was formally retracted decades ago, yet the repetition alone kept it alive long enough to reduce immunization rates for twenty years. Spot the Red Flags in Health Claims

The Four-Move Fact Check
Digital literacy expert Mike Caulfield developed a method called SIFT that professional fact-checkers use. It takes about 30 seconds and works for any health claim you encounter online.
Stop. Before you read further, share, or react, pause. Ask yourself if you recognize and trust the source. Check your emotional state. If you’re feeling outraged or validated, your critical thinking is already compromised.
Investigate the source. Spend 30 seconds figuring out who created the content. A video about the benefits of a supplement produced by the company selling it is fundamentally different from an independent review. You don’t need a deep investigation. Just find out who’s behind it and what their incentive might be. Fact-checkers do this by reading “laterally,” opening new tabs to see what other sources say about the publisher, rather than staying on the original site and reading deeper into it.
Find better coverage. If the claim is significant, other credible outlets will have reported on it. If you can only find it on one blog or one social media account, that’s telling.
Trace claims to their original context. Health misinformation often strips findings from their original context. A study done on cells in a petri dish gets presented as a cure. A quote from a doctor gets clipped to change its meaning. Find the original source and read what it actually says.
Evaluate Sources With Five Questions
For health information you’re seriously considering acting on, run it through five quick checks, sometimes called the CRAAP test (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, purpose).
First, is it current? Medical knowledge evolves fast. A cancer treatment article from 2010 may be outdated. Look for a publication or update date. Second, does it apply to your specific situation? A study on elderly patients may not apply to a 30-year-old, and vice versa. Third, who wrote it? Check credentials. A board-certified physician writing about their specialty carries more weight than a wellness influencer. If the site doesn’t have an “about” section or won’t tell you who’s behind it, that’s a problem. Fourth, can you verify the claims elsewhere? Accurate health information appears across multiple independent sources. Fifth, what’s the purpose? Is the site trying to inform you, or sell you something? Content that exists primarily to drive you toward a product deserves extra scrutiny.
Be Skeptical on Social Media, Especially Video
Short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels present a unique challenge. Anyone can put credentials in their username, wear a lab coat, or use a formal title. Research on TikTok health content found that the least common thing viewers did was actually verify whether the person giving advice had real qualifications. The visual cues of authority (scrubs, confident delivery, professional-looking settings) are easy to fake.
When you encounter health advice in a short video, ask: Is this person identified by their full name? Can you independently verify their credentials through a hospital, university, or licensing board? Are they citing specific evidence you can look up, or just speaking with confidence? Confidence is not a credential. Some of the most dangerous health misinformation is delivered by people who seem completely sure of themselves.
Watch for AI-Generated Health Content
AI chatbots can generate medical information that sounds authoritative but is entirely fabricated. These tools sometimes produce what researchers call “hallucinations,” content that reads as plausible but has no basis in real data. In documented cases, AI tools asked about rare medical conditions generated detailed responses complete with citations to scientific papers, including journal names and identification numbers. When researchers checked, the paper titles were invented and the identification numbers belonged to completely unrelated studies. Google’s own developers have described these errors as “errors with confidence.”
If you use AI tools for health questions, treat their output as a starting point, not an answer. Verify any specific claim, citation, or statistic independently. Never rely on an AI-generated reference without confirming it exists.
Where to Find Reliable Health Information
A few sources consistently provide accurate, evidence-based health information written for non-experts. MedlinePlus, run by the National Library of Medicine, covers more than 1,000 health topics in plain language. The National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention websites are reliable starting points for most common health questions. Websites from academic medical institutions and major research hospitals also maintain high editorial standards.
As a general rule, government health sites ending in .gov and nonprofit organizations ending in .org tend to be more reliable than commercial .com sites, though this isn’t absolute. Fact-checking websites can help you quickly verify a specific viral claim. The key habit is checking at least two or three independent sources before accepting any health claim that would change your behavior.
Bring Your Research to Your Doctor
If you’ve found health information online that concerns you or seems promising, bring it to your next appointment. Research on physician attitudes shows that most doctors view patients who research their conditions favorably. They see it as a sign of engagement, not a challenge to their authority. Physicians in multiple studies reported that they appreciate when patients bring internet findings to consultations, and they actively help patients sort credible information from unreliable sources.
The most productive approach: tell your doctor what you found, where you found it, and ask for their perspective. Doctors who respond well to this kind of conversation tend to work more collaboratively with their patients overall. They’ll often recommend specific reliable websites tailored to your condition, explain why certain sources are more trustworthy than others, and provide context that a website simply can’t, because it doesn’t know your full medical history. Your online research becomes most powerful not as a replacement for professional guidance, but as a tool that makes your conversations with your healthcare team more specific and informed.
