Taking your pulse rate is straightforward: place two fingers on the inside of your wrist, count the beats, and you have a reliable snapshot of your heart’s activity. The whole process takes 60 seconds and requires no equipment. A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), so that’s the range you’re comparing against.
Finding the Right Spot on Your Wrist
The easiest place to feel your pulse is the radial artery on the thumb side of your inner wrist. Turn one hand palm-up and look at the area just below the base of your thumb, where your wrist creases. That’s where the artery runs close to the surface.
Place the tips of your index and middle fingers from your other hand on that spot. Press lightly until you feel a steady thumping under your fingertips. You want just enough pressure to detect each beat. Pressing too hard can actually compress the artery and block blood flow, which makes the pulse harder to find or disappear entirely. Don’t use your thumb, because it has its own pulse and can confuse the count.
Counting the Beats
Once you feel a steady rhythm, look at a clock or timer and count the number of beats over a full 60 seconds. This gives you the most accurate reading, especially if your heartbeat isn’t perfectly regular. If you’re short on time, you can count for 15 seconds and multiply by four. That shortcut works well when your rhythm feels even and consistent, but it magnifies any counting error, so the full minute is better when precision matters.
While you’re counting, pay attention to the rhythm itself. A healthy pulse feels evenly spaced, like a metronome. If you notice beats that seem to arrive early, pause unexpectedly, or feel uneven in spacing or strength, that’s worth noting. Occasional skipped beats are common and often harmless, but a persistently irregular rhythm is useful information to share with a doctor.
Using the Neck as an Alternative
If you can’t find the pulse at your wrist, try your neck. The carotid artery runs along either side of your windpipe, just below the jawline. Use the same two-finger technique and the same light pressure. Be especially gentle here. The carotid carries blood to your brain, and pressing too firmly on one side can slow your heart rate or make you feel lightheaded. Never press both sides of your neck at the same time.
Normal Resting Heart Rate by Age
What counts as “normal” depends heavily on how old you are. Babies and young children have much faster heart rates than adults because their hearts are smaller and need to pump more frequently. Here’s what typical resting rates look like across age groups:
- Newborns (up to 4 weeks): 100 to 205 bpm
- Infants (4 weeks to 1 year): 100 to 180 bpm
- Toddlers (1 to 3 years): 98 to 140 bpm
- Preschool age (3 to 5 years): 80 to 120 bpm
- School age (5 to 12 years): 75 to 118 bpm
- Adolescents (13 to 17 years): 60 to 100 bpm
- Adults (18 and older): 60 to 100 bpm
These numbers apply when you’re sitting or lying down, awake and calm. Your rate drops during sleep and rises during physical activity, stress, or illness.
When Your Resting Rate Is Above or Below Normal
A resting heart rate above 100 bpm in adults is clinically called tachycardia. It can happen for everyday reasons: caffeine, anxiety, dehydration, a hot room, or simply standing up quickly. Fever is a reliable trigger, often adding about 10 bpm for every degree of temperature increase. A persistently elevated resting rate without an obvious cause is worth investigating.
A resting rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. For many people, especially athletes and those who exercise regularly, a rate in the 40s or 50s is perfectly healthy. It reflects a heart that’s efficient enough to pump adequate blood with fewer beats. But if a slow pulse comes with dizziness, fatigue, or fainting, it may signal a problem with the heart’s electrical system.
What Can Affect Your Reading
To get a true resting heart rate, sit quietly for at least five minutes before measuring. Even mild activity like walking across a room can bump the number up temporarily. Measure at roughly the same time each day if you’re tracking trends, because your heart rate fluctuates throughout the day. Morning readings taken soon after waking tend to be the most consistent baseline.
Several common medications shift your resting pulse. Blood pressure drugs, particularly beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers, are designed to slow the heart and can push your rate well below 60 bpm. Some antidepressants also lower heart rate. On the other hand, bronchodilators used for asthma, decongestants, and stimulants (including caffeine) can raise it. If you take any of these, your “normal” baseline may sit outside the standard 60 to 100 range, and that’s expected.
Other everyday factors that raise heart rate include alcohol, nicotine, poor sleep, and emotional stress. Dehydration is an underappreciated one: when blood volume drops, the heart compensates by beating faster.
Checking Rhythm, Not Just Speed
Counting beats per minute tells you the rate, but the pattern matters too. When you’re feeling your pulse, notice whether the beats arrive at regular intervals. An arrhythmia can feel like a fluttering, pounding, or racing sensation. Premature beats, one of the most common irregularities, often feel like the heart “skipped” a beat, followed by a harder-than-usual thump as it resets.
Occasional premature beats happen in most people and are typically harmless. A pulse that feels consistently irregular, where you can’t predict when the next beat will land, is a different story. That chaotic pattern is characteristic of atrial fibrillation, the most common sustained arrhythmia. If your pulse feels irregularly irregular every time you check it, that’s a finding worth reporting.
Using Your Pulse During Exercise
Your pulse is also a practical tool for gauging workout intensity. To estimate your maximum heart rate, multiply your age by 0.7 and subtract that number from 208. For a 40-year-old, that’s 208 minus 28, giving a maximum of about 180 bpm. Moderate exercise typically targets 50 to 70 percent of that maximum, while vigorous exercise aims for 70 to 85 percent.
Checking your pulse mid-workout follows the same technique, but the 15-second shortcut becomes more practical here since stopping for a full minute lets your heart rate drop. Press your fingers to your wrist or neck immediately upon pausing, count for 15 seconds, and multiply by four. That gives you a close-enough number to know whether you’re in your target zone or pushing too hard.
