How to Take Care of Your Body: What Actually Works

Taking care of your body comes down to a handful of daily habits: sleeping enough, moving regularly, eating well, staying hydrated, managing stress, and protecting yourself from preventable damage. None of these require dramatic lifestyle overhauls. Small, consistent choices in each area compound over time into measurable differences in how you feel, how you recover, and how long your body stays healthy.

Sleep Is Where Repair Happens

Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Teenagers need eight to ten, and school-aged children need nine to twelve. These aren’t aspirational numbers. They reflect how long your body actually needs to cycle through the stages of sleep that keep you functional.

During deep sleep (stage 3 of the sleep cycle), your brain waves slow down and your body focuses on repairing tissue and reinforcing your immune system. This is the stage that determines whether you wake up feeling rested or groggy. REM sleep, the stage where most dreaming occurs, keeps your brain active in patterns that closely resemble waking life, which plays a role in memory consolidation and emotional processing. Cutting your sleep short means cutting into these stages, and you can’t selectively recover the ones you missed.

One practical way to improve sleep quality is morning light exposure. When bright light enters your eyes early in the day, it signals your brain to suppress melatonin (the hormone that makes you sleepy) and raise cortisol (the hormone that makes you alert). This resets your internal clock so that melatonin rises again at the right time in the evening, making it easier to fall asleep on schedule. Even 10 to 15 minutes of natural light shortly after waking can shift this cycle.

How Much Water You Actually Need

A simple formula: multiply your body weight in pounds by 0.67, and that’s roughly how many ounces of water you should aim for daily. A 150-pound person, for example, would target about 100 ounces. A 200-pound person would need around 134 ounces. If hitting that exact number feels unrealistic on some days, drinking at least 75% of your target still keeps you in a well-hydrated range.

These numbers increase with exercise, heat, and altitude. Thirst is a decent short-term signal, but by the time you feel noticeably thirsty, you’re often already mildly dehydrated. Keeping a water bottle nearby and sipping throughout the day is more effective than trying to catch up in large bursts.

Move Often, Not Just Intensely

The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week for adults. That works out to about 22 minutes a day, or five 30-minute sessions. Walking briskly, cycling, swimming, or anything that raises your heart rate without leaving you gasping counts as moderate intensity. Strength training at least twice a week rounds out the picture by maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and metabolic health.

But structured exercise alone doesn’t cancel out what you do the other 23 hours of the day. Prolonged sitting carries its own risks independent of whether you work out. Research from the Mayo Clinic suggests standing up from your chair every 30 minutes as a minimum intervention. If your job keeps you seated for most of the day, 60 to 75 minutes of moderate aerobic activity daily can offset the effects of too much sitting. That’s a higher bar than the general 150-minute weekly recommendation, which reflects just how much damage extended sitting does on its own.

Eat for Fiber, Not Just Calories

Most conversations about nutrition focus on what to cut out. A more useful starting point is what to add in, and fiber is at the top of that list. Current dietary guidelines recommend 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories you eat. On a 2,000-calorie diet, that’s 28 grams per day. Most people fall well short of this.

Fiber does two things your body relies on. Some types keep food moving through your digestive tract, preventing constipation and supporting gut health. Others have been linked to lower rates of heart disease over time. You get fiber from vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, and nuts. Processed foods, even “healthy” ones, tend to have most of their fiber stripped out during manufacturing. If your diet leans heavily on packaged foods, your fiber intake is likely low regardless of how many calories you’re consuming.

Nutrient Gaps You Might Not Notice

Even with a reasonably balanced diet, certain nutrient deficiencies are surprisingly common. CDC data shows that about 10% of the general U.S. population is deficient in vitamin B6, vitamin D, or iron. Those rates aren’t evenly distributed: vitamin D deficiency affects roughly 31% of non-Hispanic Black adults compared to 3% of non-Hispanic white adults, largely due to differences in how melanin affects vitamin D synthesis from sunlight. Iron deficiency is notably higher in women of childbearing age, particularly among Mexican-American (13%) and non-Hispanic Black (16%) women.

Vitamin D deficiency can show up as fatigue, muscle weakness, and mood changes. Iron deficiency causes similar symptoms along with shortness of breath and cold hands and feet. These overlap with dozens of other conditions, which is why they often go unrecognized for months or years. A standard blood panel can catch both. If you’re in a higher-risk group, periodic screening is worth the effort even if you feel fine.

Protect Your Skin Daily

Sunscreen is one of the simplest things you can do for long-term body care, and one of the most skipped. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks 98%. The jump from SPF 30 to 50 is only a 1% improvement in protection, so SPF 30 applied consistently and generously is more effective than SPF 50 applied thinly or forgotten by noon.

Reapply every two hours when you’re outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating. UV damage accumulates silently over decades, contributing to premature aging and significantly raising skin cancer risk. This applies on cloudy days too, since up to 80% of UV radiation passes through cloud cover.

Manage Stress Physically, Not Just Mentally

Stress isn’t just a mental experience. It shows up in your body as elevated heart rate, shallow breathing, tight muscles, and disrupted digestion. One of the fastest ways to interrupt this cycle is through your vagus nerve, the longest nerve in your body, which connects your brain to your heart, lungs, and gut. Stimulating it activates your parasympathetic nervous system, the branch responsible for calming you down.

Research on vagus nerve stimulation shows that it produces a measurable decrease in heart rate and shifts breathing patterns in most people. You don’t need a medical device to trigger this. Slow, deep breathing where your exhale is longer than your inhale activates the vagus nerve. So does splashing cold water on your face, humming, and gentle pressure on your abdomen. These aren’t relaxation tricks. They produce real physiological changes that lower your stress response within minutes.

Know Your Numbers

Your blood pressure is one of the most important vital signs to track, and one of the easiest to ignore because high blood pressure rarely causes symptoms. The 2025 guidelines from the American Heart Association define four categories:

  • Normal: below 120/80
  • Elevated: 120 to 129 systolic (top number) with a bottom number still below 80
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130 to 139 systolic or 80 to 89 diastolic (bottom number)
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher systolic, or 90 or higher diastolic

If either number falls into a higher category, that’s the category you’re in. Many pharmacies have free blood pressure monitors, and home cuffs are inexpensive and reliable.
