Most people are fertile, but the only way to truly confirm it is to conceive or undergo clinical testing. What you can do right now is look for reliable signs that your body is ovulating regularly, watch for red flags that suggest a problem, and understand when a medical evaluation makes sense. Here’s how to assess your fertility from multiple angles.
Track Your Cervical Mucus
The simplest fertility sign you can check without any tools is cervical mucus. Throughout your cycle, the discharge your cervix produces changes in texture, and those changes follow a predictable pattern tied to ovulation.
In the days after your period, you’ll notice very little discharge or something dry and sticky. As you approach ovulation, it becomes wetter and creamier. Right before ovulation, it turns clear, slippery, and stretchy, often compared to raw egg whites. This is your peak fertility window. That wet, slippery consistency helps sperm travel through the uterus to reach an egg. If you consistently see this egg-white texture around the middle of your cycle each month, it’s a strong sign that your body is ovulating normally.
After ovulation, the mucus dries up again and becomes thicker. If you never notice that slippery, stretchy phase, or if your discharge stays the same consistency all month, it may be worth investigating further.
Use Basal Body Temperature
Your resting body temperature shifts slightly when you ovulate. The change is small, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C), so you need a basal body thermometer that reads to two decimal places. Take your temperature first thing every morning before getting out of bed, and log it.
You’re looking for a pattern: temperatures that stay relatively low in the first half of your cycle, then bump up and remain elevated for at least three days. That sustained rise confirms ovulation has already happened. The catch is that temperature tracking tells you after the fact, so it’s most useful over several months to confirm that you’re ovulating regularly rather than to pinpoint the exact day for timing intercourse.

Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits detect a hormone surge in your urine that happens about one to one and a half days before an egg is released. According to the FDA, these tests are accurate roughly 9 times out of 10 when used correctly. They’re more precise for timing than temperature tracking because they give you a heads-up before ovulation rather than confirming it afterward.
You’ll typically start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate (around day 10 of a 28-day cycle) and test once daily until you get a positive result. A positive means your body is gearing up to release an egg within the next day or so. If you test for several months and never get a positive, that’s worth discussing with a doctor.
Check Your Cycle Regularity
A regular menstrual cycle is one of the most straightforward indicators that your reproductive system is functioning well. Cycles that fall between 21 and 35 days and arrive on a roughly predictable schedule suggest you’re ovulating. Variation of a few days from month to month is completely normal.
What raises concern is a pattern of missed periods, cycles that are consistently shorter than 21 days or longer than 35, or bleeding that’s unpredictable enough that you can never anticipate when your next period will come. Irregular or absent periods are a hallmark of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), one of the most common causes of infertility. PCOS involves elevated levels of androgens that interfere with the development and release of eggs. Other signs include unusual hair growth, persistent acne, and difficulty losing weight.
Severe pelvic pain during your period can also signal a fertility issue. Endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often causes debilitating menstrual cramps, pain during sex, heavy or irregular bleeding, and painful bowel movements. Pain levels vary widely, but if your period pain consistently disrupts your daily life, it’s worth raising with a provider.
Male Fertility Signs
Fertility isn’t only about one partner. About half of infertility cases involve a male factor, and there are fewer at-home clues for men than for women. A semen analysis is the standard test, and the World Health Organization’s 2021 reference values set the lower limits at 16 million sperm per milliliter, at least 30% moving forward progressively, and at least 4% with normal shape.

How Age Affects Fertility
Age is the single biggest factor in female fertility, and its effects are steeper than many people expect. Fertility begins declining gradually in the late 20s, more noticeably after 35, and drops sharply after 40. IVF success rates illustrate this clearly: women under 30 have about a 43% chance of a live birth after one cycle, while women aged 40 to 41 have roughly a 13% chance. Even after three cycles, the cumulative rate for the older group reaches only about 25%, compared to 66% for the younger group.
This decline is driven by both the number and the quality of eggs. A blood test for AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) can give your doctor a sense of your remaining egg supply. Levels below 1 nanogram per milliliter suggest the supply is declining, though a low number alone doesn’t predict whether you can or can’t get pregnant.
