You can tell you’re ovulating by tracking a combination of body signals: changes in cervical mucus, a slight rise in resting body temperature, and for some people, a dull ache on one side of the lower abdomen. No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own, but together they paint a clear picture. Over-the-counter urine tests can also detect the hormone surge that triggers ovulation about a day before it happens.
What Actually Happens During Ovulation
Ovulation is the moment a mature egg releases from one of your ovaries. It’s the result of a carefully timed hormone chain reaction. Early in your cycle, your pituitary gland releases a hormone that stimulates your ovaries to start developing follicles, which are fluid-filled sacs where eggs mature. One follicle becomes dominant and pumps out rising levels of estrogen, which thickens the uterine lining in preparation for a potential pregnancy.
When estrogen reaches a high enough level, it triggers a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH). That LH surge is the final signal: it causes the mature egg to burst from the follicle, usually about 24 to 36 hours later. After release, the egg survives for less than 24 hours. This is why the fertile window is so narrow and why pinpointing ovulation matters if you’re trying to conceive or avoid pregnancy.
Cervical Mucus: The Most Accessible Daily Sign
The most practical way to spot approaching ovulation is by paying attention to your cervical mucus. It changes in texture and appearance throughout your cycle in response to shifting estrogen levels, and these changes follow a fairly predictable pattern.
In the days after your period, you’ll notice little to no discharge, or mucus that feels dry and sticky, sometimes white or light yellow. As ovulation approaches, it becomes creamy, similar to the consistency of yogurt. Then, right before ovulation, it shifts dramatically: clear, slippery, stretchy, and wet. The most common comparison is raw egg whites. This “egg white” mucus exists for a reason. Its slippery texture helps sperm travel more easily toward the egg your body is about to release. Once ovulation passes and progesterone rises, the mucus dries up again or becomes thick and sticky.
Checking daily takes just a moment. You can observe what’s on toilet paper after wiping or check the mucus between your fingers to see if it stretches. When it stretches an inch or more without breaking, you’re likely in your most fertile window.
Basal Body Temperature Tracking
Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation. This is called basal body temperature (BBT), and it needs to be taken first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, talk, or even sit up. The rise is small: typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit, though it can range from 0.4°F to 1°F depending on the person.
The key detail is that temperature rises after ovulation, not before. So BBT tracking confirms that ovulation already happened rather than predicting it in advance. When you see higher temperatures for at least three consecutive days, you can assume ovulation occurred. Over several months of charting, patterns emerge that help you anticipate when the shift will happen in future cycles. A basic digital thermometer that reads to two decimal places works, though there are wearable sensors designed specifically for overnight tracking.
Ovulation Pain
Some people feel ovulation happen. It’s a dull cramp or sharp twinge on one side of the lower abdomen, sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”). It occurs mid-cycle, right around the time the egg releases. The pain typically lasts a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally stick around for a day or two. It may switch sides from month to month, depending on which ovary releases the egg.
Not everyone experiences this. If you do, it’s a useful confirming signal, but it’s too inconsistent to rely on as your only tracking method.
Breast Tenderness and Other Subtle Clues
Mild breast tenderness and swelling are common in cycles where ovulation occurs normally. A University of British Columbia study found that women with confirmed normal ovulatory cycles had significantly more breast tenderness, both in intensity and duration, compared to cycles with hormonal disruptions. The tenderness and swelling typically last around four to five days per cycle.
Other secondary signs some people notice include a brief increase in sex drive around ovulation, mild bloating, and heightened senses. These are less consistent across individuals than mucus or temperature changes, but they can add useful context when you’re learning to read your own patterns.
Ovulation Predictor Kits
Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) work by detecting the LH surge in your urine. Since the LH surge happens about one to one and a half days before ovulation, these tests give you advance warning, unlike temperature tracking which only confirms ovulation after the fact. The FDA notes these tests detect LH reliably about 9 times out of 10 when performed correctly.
Most kits look and work like a pregnancy test: you hold a strip in your urine stream or dip it in a collected sample. A positive result means your LH is surging and ovulation is likely within the next day or so. Some newer versions also measure a form of estrogen, which starts rising earlier and can give you a wider fertile window estimate. Testing once a day in the afternoon, starting a few days before you expect ovulation, gives the best chance of catching the surge.
Why Calendar Apps Often Get It Wrong
Many period-tracking apps predict ovulation by assuming it happens 14 days before your next period, based on a textbook 28-day cycle. The problem is that only 13 to 16% of women actually have a 28-day cycle, and only about 13% ovulate on day 14. More than half of women see their cycle length vary by five or more days from month to month.
Apps that rely purely on calendar math may be inaccurate for most people. Apps that incorporate real biometric data, like daily temperature readings, mucus observations, or urine hormone levels, perform significantly better because those inputs directly reflect what’s happening in your body rather than relying on averages.
Blood Tests That Confirm Ovulation
If you want definitive confirmation, a progesterone blood test is the gold standard. After ovulation, progesterone rises sharply. Your doctor will typically order this test about a week after suspected ovulation. Normal progesterone levels during this post-ovulation phase range from 2 to 25 ng/mL. A level in that range confirms that ovulation took place. This test is especially useful if you’ve been tracking at home and want to verify your observations, or if you’re working with a fertility specialist.
Signs You May Not Be Ovulating
Some cycles happen without ovulation, a condition called anovulation. The most obvious sign is irregular periods: cycles that are consistently much shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 days, or vary wildly in length from month to month. Not getting a period at all is another red flag. If you’re tracking cervical mucus and never see the egg-white stage, or if your temperature chart stays flat without a clear shift, those are clues that ovulation may not be occurring.
Other signs of the hormonal imbalances that cause anovulation include unexplained weight gain, thinning hair, and persistent acne. Keeping a record of your cycle lengths, bleeding patterns, and symptoms over several months gives you useful information to share with a healthcare provider if something seems off.
