How to Tell If You’re Ovulating: Signs to Know

The most reliable way to tell you’re ovulating is by tracking changes in your cervical mucus, using ovulation predictor kits, and monitoring your basal body temperature. No single sign is definitive on its own, but combining two or three methods gives you a much clearer picture of when your body releases an egg each cycle.

Cervical Mucus Changes

Your cervical mucus follows a predictable pattern throughout your cycle, and learning to read it is one of the most practical ways to spot ovulation approaching. In the days after your period, mucus is typically dry or sticky, with a paste-like texture that may look white or light yellow. As your cycle progresses, it becomes creamy and smooth, similar to yogurt.

The key shift happens just before ovulation. Your mucus turns wet, clear, and slippery, stretching between your fingers like raw egg whites. This is your most fertile window. The stretchy, slippery quality helps sperm travel more easily, and seeing it means ovulation is likely within a day or two. After ovulation, mucus dries up again, returning to thick and sticky. If you check once a day (by wiping before urinating or observing what’s on your underwear), the transition from sticky to egg-white consistency becomes easier to recognize over a few cycles.

Ovulation Predictor Kits

Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. This hormone spikes roughly 24 to 36 hours before your ovary releases an egg, so a positive result (often shown as a smiley face or a test line as dark as the control line) means ovulation is imminent. That gives you a short but actionable heads-up, since a released egg survives less than 24 hours after ovulation.

Most kits recommend you start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. For a 28-day cycle, that typically means starting around day 10 or 11. If your cycles are irregular, you may need to test over a longer window, which can get expensive. OPKs are good at confirming that your body attempted to ovulate, but they detect the hormonal signal, not the egg release itself. In rare cases, your body can surge without successfully releasing an egg.

Basal Body Temperature Tracking

Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation due to rising progesterone levels. The increase is small, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit, though it can range from 0.4°F to 1°F depending on the person. To catch this shift, you need to take your temperature first thing every morning before getting out of bed, using a thermometer accurate to at least one-tenth of a degree.

The important thing to understand is that the temperature rise confirms ovulation already happened. It won’t warn you in advance. That’s why it works best in combination with cervical mucus tracking or OPKs. Over several months of charting, though, you’ll start to see your personal pattern and can anticipate when your temperature shift usually occurs.

Physical Sensations Around Ovulation

Some people feel ovulation happening. A one-sided pain or twinge in the lower abdomen, known as mittelschmerz, occurs on the side of the ovary releasing the egg. The pain can be sharp or dull, lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours. It may switch sides from month to month, or stay on the same side for several cycles in a row. Some people experience it every month, others only occasionally, and many never notice it at all.

Breast tenderness is another common sign, though it tends to show up more in the days after ovulation as progesterone rises. In normally ovulatory cycles, mild tenderness and slight swelling can last around four to five days. You might also notice a temporary increase in sex drive around ovulation, which is driven by the same estrogen peak that triggers the LH surge.

Combining Methods for Better Accuracy

No single tracking method is perfect, and research shows that even well-designed fertility apps can disagree significantly on when your fertile window starts and ends. One study comparing two apps using identical cycle data found they agreed on the start of the fertile window only 57% of the time and on the end date just 36% of the time. Apps that rely on temperature data alone designated some days as “infertile” that actually fell within the estimated fertile window.

Adding cervical mucus observations to temperature tracking improves accuracy. The symptothermal method, which cross-checks both signals, has been clinically associated with unintended pregnancy rates of about 2% with typical use. By contrast, app-based methods relying primarily on temperature alone reported typical-use unintended pregnancy rates of 8% to 9%. If you’re tracking ovulation to conceive or to avoid pregnancy, combining at least two physical signs gives you a more reliable picture than relying on any single indicator or calendar estimate.

When Ovulation Might Not Be Happening

Having a monthly bleed doesn’t guarantee you ovulated. It’s possible to experience what looks like a regular period without an egg ever being released. This is called anovulatory bleeding, and it happens when hormonal fluctuations cause the uterine lining to build up and shed without completing the full ovulation process. Cycles that are consistently very short, very long, or highly irregular are more likely to be anovulatory, but even seemingly normal cycles can lack ovulation.

If you’re tracking and never see the classic signs (no egg-white mucus, no temperature shift, no positive OPK over several months), that pattern is worth paying attention to. A blood test measuring progesterone about a week after expected ovulation can give a definitive answer. Progesterone levels above 10 ng/mL at that point in your cycle indicate that ovulation occurred normally, while levels below that threshold suggest it did not.
