How to Tell If You’re Ovulating: Signs to Watch

Your body gives several reliable signals when you’re ovulating, from changes in cervical mucus to a slight rise in body temperature. Some signs appear in the days leading up to ovulation, giving you a heads-up that your fertile window is open, while others confirm ovulation only after it has already happened. Knowing the difference matters, especially if you’re trying to conceive or simply want to understand your cycle better.

Cervical Mucus Is the Most Useful Daily Sign

The fluid your cervix produces changes in predictable ways throughout your cycle, and tracking it is one of the most practical ways to spot your fertile window in real time. Researchers at the UNC School of Medicine classify cervical mucus into four types, ranging from dry (least fertile) to wet and stretchy (most fertile).

Early in your cycle, after your period ends, you may notice very little discharge or a dry sensation. As ovulation approaches, mucus becomes thicker, creamy, and whitish or yellowish. This is a transitional phase signaling you may be entering your fertile window. Right around ovulation, the mucus shifts dramatically: it turns transparent, slippery, and stretchy, often compared to raw egg white. You may also notice a wet, smooth sensation. This type of mucus is associated with the highest chance of conception because it helps sperm travel and survive.

To check, you can observe what appears on your underwear or on toilet paper, or gently collect a sample with clean fingers and see if it stretches between them. The “egg white” stage typically lasts one to three days and is your clearest real-time indicator that ovulation is imminent or underway.

Ovulation Predictor Kits Detect the Hormonal Trigger

Ovulation is triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). Blood levels of LH rise about 36 to 40 hours before the egg is actually released. Home ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) work by detecting this surge in your urine, and once the test reads positive, ovulation typically follows within 12 to 24 hours.

These kits are reasonably accurate. The FDA notes they detect the LH surge reliably about 9 times out of 10 when used correctly. You’ll get the best results by testing at the same time each day, starting a few days before you expect to ovulate. Most instructions suggest beginning around day 10 of your cycle if your cycle is roughly 28 days, but you should adjust based on your own cycle length. A positive result means you’re in your most fertile window right now.

One limitation: OPKs tell you ovulation is about to happen, not that it definitely did happen. In rare cases, the LH surge can occur without an egg being released. If you need confirmation that ovulation took place, other methods (like temperature tracking or a blood test) fill that gap.

Basal Body Temperature Confirms Ovulation After the Fact

Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after you ovulate, typically rising by less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C). This bump is caused by progesterone, which your body starts producing once the egg has been released. The temperature stays elevated until your next period begins.

To use this method, you need a basal body thermometer (accurate to a tenth of a degree) and a consistent routine: take your temperature first thing every morning before getting out of bed. After a few cycles of charting, you’ll start to see the pattern. The temperature shift won’t warn you that ovulation is coming, but it will confirm it happened once you see three or more consecutive days of elevated readings.

Keep in mind that illness, poor sleep, alcohol, and even the time you wake up can throw off a single day’s reading. The value is in the overall pattern across weeks, not any individual measurement.

Lower Abdominal Pain Around Mid-Cycle

Some people feel a distinct twinge or ache on one side of their lower abdomen around the time of ovulation. This is sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”). It can feel like a sharp, sudden pang or a dull cramp that lasts anywhere from a few minutes to a day or two.

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but two likely explanations exist. The growing follicle may stretch the surface of the ovary just before the egg is released, causing discomfort. Alternatively, blood or fluid from the ruptured follicle can irritate the abdominal lining afterward. Some people experience this every single month, while others notice it only occasionally or not at all. It’s a helpful supplementary clue if you feel it, but it’s too inconsistent to rely on as your primary tracking method.

Cervical Position Changes

Your cervix itself shifts during your cycle in ways you can learn to detect by touch. During non-fertile days, the cervix sits low in the vaginal canal, feels firm (like the tip of your nose), and the opening is closed. As ovulation approaches, it moves higher, softens (feeling more like your lips), opens slightly, and becomes wetter. This pattern is sometimes summarized with the acronym SHOW: soft, high, open, and wet.

Checking cervical position takes practice. You’ll need several cycles of daily observation before the differences become obvious. It works best as a supporting sign alongside mucus tracking rather than a standalone method.

Breast Tenderness and Other Secondary Signs

Fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels around ovulation can cause breast soreness or nipple sensitivity. Estrogen rises before ovulation and can stimulate breast tissue, while the progesterone surge that follows ovulation may trigger soreness in the days after. The timing varies from person to person, and some people never experience it at all, so sore breasts are not a reliable ovulation indicator on their own.

Other secondary signs some people notice include a brief increase in sex drive around their fertile window, mild bloating, or heightened sense of smell. These are real hormonal effects, but they’re subtle and inconsistent enough that they work best as “supporting evidence” alongside more concrete signs like mucus changes or a positive OPK.

Saliva Ferning Tests: Less Reliable

Some home tests use a small microscope to look for a fern-shaped crystal pattern in dried saliva, which can appear when estrogen levels rise near ovulation. The concept is real, but the FDA cautions that these tests are not very dependable. Not all women produce the ferning pattern. Eating, drinking, smoking, or even brushing your teeth before testing can disrupt results. Some people fern outside their fertile window, and the test has even produced ferning patterns in men. If you’re looking for accuracy, urine-based OPKs are a better choice.

How Your Doctor Can Confirm Ovulation

If you’re working with a healthcare provider, particularly during a fertility evaluation, they can confirm ovulation with a blood test measuring progesterone. A single blood draw showing a progesterone level at or above 5 ng/mL confirms ovulation with close to 99% specificity. This test is usually drawn about a week after suspected ovulation (around day 21 of a 28-day cycle). Ultrasound monitoring, where the doctor visually tracks follicle growth and collapse, is another clinical tool but is typically reserved for fertility treatment cycles.

Putting the Signs Together

No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. The most effective approach combines two or three methods. Track cervical mucus daily for real-time fertility awareness, use an OPK to pinpoint the LH surge, and chart your basal temperature to confirm that ovulation actually took place. Over two or three cycles, you’ll have a clear picture of your personal pattern.

Your fertile window is wider than the moment of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for three to five days, which means the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation are all potentially fertile. That’s why the early warning signs, like changing mucus and a positive OPK, are more actionable for conception timing than the after-the-fact confirmation from a temperature rise.
