How to Tell When a Woman Is Ovulating: Top Signs

You can tell when ovulation is approaching by tracking changes in cervical mucus, using ovulation predictor kits that detect a hormone surge, or monitoring your basal body temperature each morning. No single method is perfectly reliable on its own, but combining two or three gives you a much clearer picture. The most important thing to understand first: ovulation doesn’t happen on the same day for every woman, and it often doesn’t happen on the same day from cycle to cycle in the same woman.

Why “Day 14” Is Unreliable

The idea that ovulation always happens on day 14 of a 28-day cycle is one of the most persistent myths in reproductive health. In reality, ovulation has been documented as early as day 8 and as late as day 60. Even among women with regular cycles, there’s up to a 6 percent chance of being in the fertile window on the day they expect their period to start. On any given day between days 6 and 21, there’s at least a 10 percent probability a woman is fertile. Research from the American Academy of Family Physicians concluded that standard clinical guidelines about fertile timing are valid for only about 30 percent of healthy women.

This variability is exactly why you can’t just count calendar days and call it done. You need to read what your body is actually doing.

Cervical Mucus: The Most Accessible Sign

Your cervical mucus changes throughout your cycle in a predictable pattern, and those changes are driven by rising estrogen as your body prepares to release an egg. Tracking these changes costs nothing and gives you a real-time signal that ovulation is approaching.

After your period ends, you’ll likely notice very little discharge. What’s there tends to be dry or sticky, like paste, and may look white or light yellow. As you move toward ovulation, the mucus becomes creamy, smooth, and white, similar to yogurt. Then it shifts to watery and clear. Finally, in the one to two days before ovulation, it becomes slippery, stretchy, and resembles raw egg whites. That egg-white texture is the key signal. Sperm swim much more easily through thin, wet mucus, so this stage marks your most fertile time.

To check, wash your hands and insert a finger into your vagina. Pull it out and press the mucus between your finger and thumb, then slowly separate them. If it stretches into a clear strand without breaking, you’re likely in your fertile window. In a typical 28-day cycle, this stage falls around days 10 to 14, but your own pattern may differ.

The LH Surge and Ovulation Predictor Kits

Ovulation is triggered by a rapid rise in luteinizing hormone, commonly called the LH surge. Once LH levels spike in your blood, ovulation follows roughly 36 to 40 hours later. Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), available at any pharmacy, detect this surge in your urine.

You typically start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. When the test line is as dark as or darker than the control line, you’ve detected the surge, and ovulation is likely within the next day or two. This gives you a narrow but actionable heads-up. OPKs are widely considered the most practical at-home tool for pinpointing ovulation timing, and they’re commonly used as the benchmark in clinical research comparing other methods.

One limitation: OPKs tell you ovulation is about to happen, but they can’t confirm it actually did. A small percentage of cycles produce an LH surge without releasing an egg. That’s where temperature tracking comes in.

Basal Body Temperature

Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your body’s temperature at complete rest, taken first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. After ovulation, progesterone levels rise, and this causes a small but measurable temperature increase. The shift is less than half a degree Fahrenheit for most women, ranging from as little as 0.4°F (0.22°C) to as much as 1°F (0.56°C).

The catch is that this rise happens after the egg has already been released. BBT confirms ovulation occurred but doesn’t warn you in advance. To use it for fertility planning, you need several months of charted data so you can see your personal pattern and anticipate when the shift typically happens. You’ll need a thermometer accurate to at least one decimal place, and you should take your temperature at the same time every morning before standing, eating, or drinking anything.

When you look at a full cycle chart, you’ll see lower temperatures in the first half and a clear step up in the second half. If the temperature stays elevated for three or more days in a row, ovulation almost certainly occurred.

Physical Symptoms You May Notice

Some women feel ovulation happening. A one-sided pain in the lower abdomen, sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), occurs on whichever side is releasing the egg that cycle. It can feel like a sharp twinge, a dull ache, or a mild cramp. The sensation usually lasts anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally persist for a day or two.

Not everyone experiences this pain, and its intensity varies widely. Other physical signs some women report around ovulation include breast tenderness, light spotting, increased sex drive, and a heightened sense of smell. These are useful as supporting clues but aren’t reliable enough to use on their own.

Apps and Wearables vs. Calendar Counting

Period-tracking apps that simply count days from your last period use a calendar method, and it’s significantly less accurate than methods that incorporate physical data. A 2025 study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research compared a wearable ring’s temperature-based predictions against calendar-based predictions across over 1,100 ovulatory cycles. The temperature-based method detected 96.4 percent of ovulations with an average error of about 1.3 days. The calendar method had an average error of 3.4 days, nearly three times worse.

The gap widened further for women with irregular cycles. Calendar predictions became significantly less accurate as cycle variability increased, while the temperature-based method maintained consistent accuracy regardless of whether cycles were regular or irregular. If your cycles vary in length from month to month, relying on a simple countdown from your period is especially unreliable.

Saliva Ferning: A Less Reliable Option

Some over-the-counter kits use a small microscope to detect a fern-shaped crystallization pattern in dried saliva, which is triggered by rising estrogen near ovulation. In theory, you lick a slide, let it dry, and look for the pattern. In practice, the FDA notes several problems: not all women produce the ferning pattern, eating, drinking, smoking, or brushing your teeth can disrupt results, and ferning can appear outside the fertile window or even in men. The FDA explicitly states this test should not be used to prevent pregnancy because it isn’t reliable enough.

The Fertile Window in Practice

An egg survives for less than 24 hours after it’s released. Sperm, on the other hand, can live inside the reproductive tract for up to five days. This means your fertile window opens several days before ovulation and closes shortly after. The highest-probability days for conception are the two to three days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.

For the clearest picture of your fertile window, combine at least two methods. Track cervical mucus daily for a real-time signal that fertility is rising. Use OPKs to catch the LH surge when mucus signs suggest you’re getting close. Chart your BBT to confirm ovulation happened and build a record of your personal pattern over time. Together, these three methods cover the before, during, and after of ovulation, giving you far more information than any single approach alone.
