Your body gives several signals before and during ovulation, and the most reliable approach is to track more than one of them. Ovulation typically happens once per cycle, about 10 to 16 days before your next period starts. The fertile window surrounding it lasts roughly five to six days. Here’s how to spot it.
Cervical Mucus: The Most Accessible Daily Sign
The texture and appearance of your cervical mucus changes predictably throughout your cycle, and learning to read those changes is one of the simplest ways to identify your fertile window. In the days after your period, mucus is typically thick, white, and dry. As estrogen rises in the days leading up to ovulation, the mucus gradually becomes wetter, clearer, and more slippery.
Right before ovulation, it takes on a consistency often compared to raw egg whites: stretchy, clear, and very slippery. This texture exists for a reason. Sperm can swim through thin, wet mucus far more easily than through the thick, paste-like mucus present at other times in your cycle. Think of the difference between swimming through water versus trying to move through mud. Once ovulation passes, the mucus dries up again and returns to its thicker state. That shift from wet and stretchy back to dry is a sign ovulation has already occurred.
To check, you can observe the mucus on toilet paper before wiping or between your fingers. It helps to do this at roughly the same time each day so you can notice the progression.
Ovulation Predictor Kits
Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) are urine test strips that detect the surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) your body releases 24 to 48 hours before ovulation. Most kits use a sensitivity threshold of 25 mIU/mL, which has been shown to give the best balance between catching real surges and avoiding false positives. Overall, these kits detect ovulation with 84% to 97% accuracy, making them more reliable than tracking temperature or mucus alone.
A 2024 study in Fertility and Sterility compared five popular brands head to head against blood LH measurements. Surge detection accuracy ranged from about 92% to 97% across brands, with the less expensive strip-style tests (Easy@Home, Pregmate, Wondfo) performing as well as or slightly better than pricier options. The key takeaway: you don’t need to spend a lot for reliable results.
For the best results, test in the early afternoon or after a long hold without drinking much fluid. Your LH surge often begins in the early morning, but it takes several hours for enough hormone to accumulate in your urine. A positive result (where the test line is as dark as or darker than the control line) means ovulation is likely within the next day or two.
Basal Body Temperature
Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation. The change is small, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C), but it’s consistent enough to confirm that ovulation happened. The catch is that it only tells you after the fact. By the time you see the temperature rise, you’ve already ovulated.
To use this method, take your temperature first thing every morning before getting out of bed, ideally at the same time. Use a thermometer that reads to two decimal places, since you’re looking for tiny shifts. After two to three cycles of charting, you’ll likely notice a pattern: a cluster of lower temperatures in the first half of your cycle, then a sustained rise in the second half. The rise should stay elevated for at least three days to confirm ovulation occurred. Over time, this historical data helps you predict roughly when ovulation will happen in future cycles, even though each individual reading is retrospective.
That said, the method has real limitations. A 2025 validation study found that traditional temperature tracking correctly placed ovulation within one day of the actual date only about 20% to 22% of the time. Illness, poor sleep, alcohol, and even getting up to use the bathroom can all throw off a reading.
Wearable Fertility Trackers
Wearable devices that continuously monitor skin temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate overnight have improved on the old thermometer-and-chart approach. A 2025 study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research validated the Oura Ring across more than 1,100 ovulatory cycles and found it detected 96.4% of ovulations, with an average error of about 1.3 days from the actual ovulation date. That significantly outperformed both the calendar method (which averaged a 3.4-day error) and wrist-worn devices, which have reported detection rates between 54% and 86%.
The ring’s accuracy held up across different age groups and most cycle lengths, though it performed slightly worse in abnormally long cycles (average error rising to 1.7 days). Because these devices collect data passively while you sleep, they remove the human error that plagues manual temperature tracking. The tradeoff is cost: wearable trackers require an upfront purchase and often a subscription.
Physical Symptoms You Might Notice
Some people feel ovulation happen. A one-sided twinge or cramp in the lower abdomen, sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), occurs on the side of the ovary releasing an egg. It can feel like a sharp pinch or a dull ache and typically lasts anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, though it occasionally lingers for a day or two. Some people experience it every cycle, others only occasionally, and many never notice it at all. On its own it’s not reliable enough to time anything precisely, but paired with other signs, it’s a useful confirmation.
Other common physical cues around ovulation include breast tenderness, mild bloating, increased sex drive, and light spotting. These vary widely from person to person and cycle to cycle.
Cervical Position Changes
Your cervix itself changes position and texture across your cycle. In the days before ovulation, it rises higher in the vaginal canal, becomes softer, and opens slightly. At peak fertility, the cervix may feel more like your lips (soft and cushiony) rather than the firm, nose-like texture it has earlier in the cycle. It also becomes wetter. Sometimes it rises so high and becomes so soft that it’s hard to distinguish from the vaginal walls.
This method takes practice. You’ll need to check your cervix with a clean finger at the same time each day over several cycles before the differences become clear. It’s best used as a supporting clue rather than a primary tracking method.
Saliva Ferning Tests
These mini microscope kits let you look at a dried sample of your saliva for a fern-like crystallization pattern, which can appear when rising estrogen changes the salt content of your saliva near ovulation. The concept is appealing because the test is reusable and non-invasive, but the FDA warns that it “may not work well for you.” Not all people who ovulate produce a visible fern pattern. Smoking, eating, drinking, and even brushing your teeth before testing can disrupt the results. Some people fern on only a few of their fertile days, while others fern outside the fertile window entirely. Even some men produce a ferning pattern. For these reasons, saliva ferning is considered one of the least reliable methods available.
Tracking With Irregular Cycles
If your cycles vary significantly in length, pinpointing ovulation becomes harder but not impossible. The main challenge is that you can’t rely on calendar counting, since ovulation day shifts from cycle to cycle. You’ll likely need to use OPKs for more days per month than someone with regular cycles, which means going through more test strips.
Mucus tracking and OPKs are especially valuable here because they respond to what your hormones are actually doing right now, rather than predicting based on past patterns. Even if your cycles are unpredictable, logging them on a calendar or app over several months can reveal loose patterns and gives a fertility specialist useful data if you ever need help. Wearable trackers that use real-time physiology also outperform calendar-based predictions for irregular cycles, though accuracy drops somewhat when cycles are abnormally long.
Combining Methods for the Clearest Picture
No single method is perfect on its own. OPKs tell you ovulation is approaching. Temperature tracking confirms it already happened. Mucus gives you a daily, real-time read on fertility. Physical symptoms add context. The most reliable approach layers two or three of these together. A practical starting point: track your mucus daily, use OPK strips starting a few days before you expect your fertile window, and optionally chart your temperature to verify the pattern. After two or three cycles, you’ll have a much clearer map of your personal ovulation timing.
