Your body gives several reliable signals when ovulation is approaching or happening, from changes in cervical mucus to a slight rise in body temperature. Some signs appear before the egg is released (giving you a heads-up), while others confirm ovulation after the fact. Knowing which is which matters, especially if you’re trying to conceive or simply want to understand your cycle better.
Cervical Mucus: The Most Accessible Daily Sign
The discharge you notice on underwear or when wiping changes throughout your cycle, and those changes follow a predictable pattern tied to ovulation. In the days after your period, you may notice very little mucus or discharge that feels dry and sticky. As ovulation approaches, it gradually becomes wetter, more slippery, and stretchy. At your most fertile point, typically around days 10 to 14 of a 28-day cycle, it resembles raw egg whites: clear, slippery, and stretchy between your fingers.
This egg-white mucus isn’t just a signal. It actively helps sperm swim through the uterus to reach an egg. When the mucus is thick and sticky earlier in your cycle, sperm have a much harder time surviving. So the texture change is both a fertility indicator and a biological function. Once ovulation passes, mucus typically becomes thicker and cloudier again, or dries up until your next period.
Checking mucus takes no equipment. You can observe it on toilet paper before wiping, or touch it between your thumb and index finger to test how far it stretches. Tracking this daily for a couple of cycles will help you recognize your own pattern, since the exact timing and amount varies from person to person.
Ovulation Predictor Kits
Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect a hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. LH surges about 36 to 40 hours before ovulation, making these tests one of the best advance-warning tools available. Once the surge shows up on the test strip, ovulation typically happens within 12 to 24 hours of that positive result.
For the most accurate reading, avoid urinating for at least four hours before testing and don’t drink excessive fluids beforehand, since diluted urine can produce a faint or false-negative result. You can test at any time of day, but test at roughly the same time each day for consistency. Most people start testing a few days before they expect to ovulate. If your cycle is 28 days, that means starting around day 10 or 11.
OPKs are widely available at drugstores and are straightforward to use. They tell you ovulation is coming, not that it already happened, which is an important distinction if you’re timing intercourse for conception.
Basal Body Temperature Tracking
Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation. The increase is small, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C), but it’s measurable with a basal body thermometer, which reads to two decimal places. You take your temperature first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, talking, or drinking anything, then log it daily.
The catch is that this method only confirms ovulation after it’s already occurred. You’ll see a sustained temperature rise over three or more days compared to the previous six. That pattern tells you the egg has been released and your body has shifted into the second half of the cycle. It won’t warn you in advance, so it’s most useful when combined with other signs like cervical mucus or OPKs. Over several months of charting, though, you’ll start to see your personal pattern and can anticipate future cycles more confidently.
Illness, poor sleep, alcohol, and even sleeping with your mouth open can throw off readings, so occasional outlier temperatures are normal. The overall trend across the month matters more than any single day.
Physical Symptoms You Might Notice
Some people feel ovulation happening. A sensation called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”) causes a mild twinge or sharp pain on one side of the lower abdomen, on whichever side is releasing the egg that month. It can last anywhere from a few minutes to about 48 hours. The pain sometimes feels like period cramps, but it shows up roughly two weeks before your period rather than alongside it.
Other signs that can accompany ovulation include light spotting, mild nausea, low back pain, and a noticeable increase in sex drive. Not everyone experiences these, and their absence doesn’t mean you aren’t ovulating. They’re simply bonus clues if you do notice them.
Saliva Ferning Tests
Some products let you place a drop of saliva on a small lens and look for a fern-shaped crystallization pattern, which can appear when estrogen rises near ovulation. In practice, these tests are unreliable. The FDA notes that not all women produce the fern pattern, and even those who do may not fern on every fertile day. Eating, drinking, smoking, or brushing your teeth before testing can disrupt results. Some men even produce the pattern. These kits should not be relied on as a primary ovulation indicator.
Why Apps Alone Aren’t Enough
Period-tracking apps that predict ovulation based only on your cycle length are essentially using a calendar method, and their accuracy is poor. A 2018 study found that menstrual cycle apps predicted ovulation correctly only about 21% of the time. The problem is that ovulation doesn’t always fall neatly on day 14. Stress, illness, travel, and normal hormonal variation can shift it by several days, even in people with regular cycles.
Apps become more useful when you feed them real body data, like daily basal temperatures, OPK results, or cervical mucus observations. The app then works as a logging tool rather than a guessing tool. On its own, though, a calendar prediction is not something to rely on.
Combining Methods for a Clearer Picture
No single sign gives you the full story. Cervical mucus warns you that ovulation is approaching. An OPK narrows the window to roughly 12 to 24 hours. A temperature rise confirms it happened. Using two or three of these together gives you both a heads-up and a confirmation, which is especially valuable if you’re trying to conceive or tracking your cycle for health reasons.
If you suspect you’re not ovulating at all, perhaps because you never see a temperature shift, never get a positive OPK, or have very irregular cycles, a blood test for progesterone drawn about a week after expected ovulation can confirm whether ovulation occurred. Levels above 10 ng/mL generally indicate that an egg was released. This is something your doctor can order as a simple blood draw.
