How to Tell You’re Ovulating: Signs and Symptoms

Your body gives several signals when you’re ovulating, ranging from changes in cervical mucus to a slight rise in body temperature. Some signs appear in the days leading up to ovulation, while others only confirm it after the fact. Knowing the difference matters, because a released egg survives for less than 24 hours, and the highest pregnancy rates occur when sperm meets the egg within four to six hours of its release.

Cervical Mucus Is the Most Visible Clue

The single most noticeable sign of approaching ovulation is a change in your cervical mucus. In the days before you ovulate, rising estrogen levels cause your cervix to produce mucus that is wet, slippery, stretchy, and clear. The most common comparison is raw egg whites. You can check by wiping with toilet paper before urinating or by gently collecting a sample with clean fingers. Fertile mucus will stretch between your thumb and forefinger without breaking.

Earlier in your cycle, mucus tends to be sticky, thick, or barely present. As estrogen climbs, it becomes creamier, then transitions to that wet, slippery consistency. Once you see egg-white mucus, you’re likely in your most fertile window. After ovulation, progesterone takes over and mucus quickly becomes thicker and tackier again, or dries up altogether. Tracking these changes daily gives you a reliable, cost-free way to identify your fertile days before they pass.

Basal Body Temperature Confirms Ovulation

Your resting body temperature rises slightly after ovulation, typically by 0.4°F to 1°F (0.22°C to 0.56°C). This increase is driven by progesterone, the hormone your body produces after the egg is released. The temperature stays elevated until your next period begins.

To use this method, you need a basal body thermometer (accurate to a tenth of a degree) and you need to take your temperature at the same time every morning before getting out of bed. After a few cycles of charting, you’ll see the pattern: a cluster of lower temperatures before ovulation and a clear upward shift afterward. The catch is that temperature tracking is retrospective. It tells you ovulation already happened, not that it’s about to. That makes it most useful when combined with mucus tracking or ovulation predictor kits, so you can spot the fertile window in advance and then confirm ovulation occurred.

Ovulation Predictor Kits Detect the Hormone Surge

Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) work by detecting a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. This surge is the direct trigger for your ovary to release an egg. Ovulation typically occurs between 8 and 20 hours after the LH peak, so a positive test means you’re about to ovulate very soon.

Most kits look similar to a home pregnancy test. You dip a strip in a urine sample or hold it in your stream, and a positive result means the LH surge is underway. For the best accuracy, start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. If your cycle is 28 days, that means starting around day 10 or 11. If your cycles are irregular, particularly due to a condition like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), these kits can give misleading results because LH levels may be chronically elevated or fluctuate unpredictably.

Ovulation Pain and Where You Feel It

Some women feel a distinct twinge or ache in their lower abdomen around ovulation, a sensation doctors call mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”). It occurs on the side of the ovary releasing the egg that month. The pain can feel sharp and sudden or dull and crampy, similar to a mild menstrual cramp. It usually lasts a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally persist for a day or two.

The side may switch from month to month, or you might feel it on the same side for several cycles in a row. Some women experience it every cycle, others only occasionally, and many never notice it at all. Slight spotting or discharge can accompany the discomfort. On its own, ovulation pain isn’t reliable enough to pinpoint your fertile window precisely, but when it lines up with mucus changes or a positive OPK, it adds useful confirmation.

Cervical Position Changes You Can Feel

Your cervix itself shifts position and texture throughout your cycle. During the early, non-fertile part of your cycle, the cervix sits lower in the vaginal canal and feels firm, somewhat like the tip of your nose. As ovulation approaches and estrogen rises, the cervix moves higher, becomes softer (closer to the feel of your lips), and opens slightly. After ovulation, it drops back down and firms up again.

Checking cervical position takes practice. Wash your hands, insert one or two fingers into your vagina, and feel for the cervix at the top of the canal. The vaginal walls feel spongy and soft, while the cervix is smoother and more defined. It takes a few cycles of daily checking to learn what your own baseline feels like, so don’t rely on this method alone at first.

Subtler Signs You Might Notice

Beyond the primary indicators, several secondary symptoms can accompany ovulation. None of these are reliable enough to use as standalone tracking tools, but they round out the picture if you’re paying attention to your body.

  • Increased sex drive. Many women notice a stronger libido around ovulation, which makes biological sense.
  • Breast tenderness. The hormonal surge before and after ovulation can cause sore breasts or sensitive nipples.
  • Heightened sense of smell. Some women become more sensitive to scents during the second half of their cycle, possibly related to increased sensitivity to male pheromones.
  • Bloating. Shifting hormone levels can slow digestion and cause water retention around ovulation.
  • Headaches or nausea. Fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels can trigger these symptoms, especially if you’re already prone to hormonal headaches.

Combining Methods for Better Accuracy

No single sign gives you the full picture. Cervical mucus tells you ovulation is approaching. A positive OPK tells you it’s imminent. A temperature shift tells you it already happened. Ovulation pain and cervical position changes add supporting evidence. Using two or three methods together gives you both a heads-up and a confirmation, which is especially useful if you’re trying to conceive or using fertility awareness for family planning.

The simplest combination for most women is tracking cervical mucus daily and using OPK strips starting a few days before the expected fertile window. Once you see egg-white mucus and get a positive OPK, you know you’re in prime territory. A temperature rise the next morning seals the confirmation. Over a few cycles, you’ll start recognizing your own pattern, and the daily effort becomes second nature.

When Cycles Are Irregular

If your cycles vary significantly in length from month to month, calendar-based predictions won’t work. Counting forward from the first day of your last period only gives useful estimates when cycles are consistent. Irregular cycles can result from hormonal imbalances, PCOS, thyroid issues, stress, or significant changes in weight or exercise.

For irregular cycles, symptom-based tracking (mucus and temperature) is more useful than calendar math because you’re observing what your body is actually doing in real time. However, OPKs can also be unreliable with PCOS, since the underlying hormone imbalance may produce false positives. If you have persistently irregular cycles and are trying to conceive, a fertility specialist can use ultrasound and blood work to pinpoint whether and when ovulation is occurring.

Saliva Ferning Tests

A less common option is a saliva-based ovulation test. When estrogen rises near ovulation, the salt content in your saliva increases. If you place a drop of saliva on a small microscope lens and let it dry, the salt crystals can form a fern-like pattern visible under magnification. The absence of ferning suggests you’re not in your fertile window. These tests are reusable and inexpensive, but they require a steady hand, good lighting, and practice interpreting the patterns. Food, drink, and even how you placed the sample can affect results, so they’re best treated as a supplementary tool rather than a primary one.
