You can’t reliably test your blood for lead poisoning at home. No over-the-counter blood test kit exists for consumer use. What you can do at home is test your environment, specifically paint and water, to identify whether lead is present in your surroundings. If those tests raise concerns, a blood draw through your doctor or local health department is the only way to confirm whether lead has entered your body.
What You Can Actually Test at Home
Home testing falls into two categories: paint testing and water testing. Both can help you figure out whether lead is lurking in your environment, which is the first step toward knowing whether you or your family are at risk. But neither one tells you what’s happening inside your body.
Paint and dust are the most common sources of lead exposure, especially in homes built before 1978. Water is the second major route, typically from older pipes, solder, or fixtures that contain lead. Testing both gives you a much clearer picture than testing either one alone.
Testing Paint for Lead
Chemical spot test kits are the most accessible way to check paint at home. You make a small cut in the paint surface, apply the kit’s chemicals, and watch for a color change. There are two main types. Rhodizonate-based kits turn red or pink when lead is present. Sodium sulfide kits turn black or grey.
The EPA recognizes three specific test kits for detecting lead in paint: the LeadCheck kit (for use on metal, plaster, drywall, and wood), the D-Lead kit (for use on wood, drywall, plaster, and metal), and the State of Massachusetts kit (for use on drywall and plaster). If you’re hiring a contractor for renovation work, these are the kits that satisfy federal compliance rules. For personal use, they’re also your best starting point.
These kits work well for detecting lead that’s present, but they have limits. A positive result (color change) is meaningful. A negative result is less certain, particularly on surfaces with many layers of paint, because the chemicals may not reach deeper layers where lead-based paint could be hiding. If your home was built before 1978 and you’re planning renovation, sanding, or demolition, a professional inspection with an XRF analyzer provides a more definitive answer.
Testing Water for Lead
Home water test kits are widely sold, but most aren’t sensitive enough to be useful. A study published in Environmental Science & Technology evaluated 16 brands across four kit types and found that 12 of them couldn’t detect lead at levels that matter for health. Their detection limits ranged from 5,000 to 20,000 micrograms per liter, hundreds of times higher than the EPA’s action level of 15 micrograms per liter.
The best-performing category was binary strip tests, which correctly identified whether dissolved lead concentrations exceeded the 15 microgram threshold in 93% of tests. If you’re going to buy a home water kit, binary strips are the type worth choosing. Look for kits that specifically claim a detection limit at or below 15 parts per billion (the same as 15 micrograms per liter).
For a more reliable answer, many local water utilities offer free or low-cost testing. You can also send a sample to a certified lab, which typically costs $20 to $50 and provides precise measurements rather than a simple positive or negative result. Your state health department’s website usually lists certified labs in your area.
Getting Your Blood Tested
If your home tests reveal lead in paint or water, or if you have other reasons for concern (a child with developmental delays, an older home undergoing renovation, occupational exposure), the next step is a blood lead test. This requires a medical provider.
There are two types of blood tests. A finger-prick (capillary) test gives fast results but can read falsely high if any lead on the skin gets captured in the sample. A venous blood draw, taken from a vein in the arm, is more reliable and is used to confirm results from an initial finger-prick screening. Venous samples are particularly better at detecting lower lead levels, which is exactly the range that matters most for early intervention.
The current reference value is 3.5 micrograms per deciliter. This doesn’t mean levels below that number are “safe.” It means a result above 3.5 puts you or your child above the 97.5th percentile nationally, indicating higher-than-typical exposure that warrants action.
What Different Blood Lead Levels Mean
At levels between 3.5 and 19 micrograms per deciliter, the CDC recommends identifying and removing the lead source, testing for iron deficiency (iron helps the body resist lead absorption), adjusting the diet to include more calcium and iron, and monitoring with follow-up blood tests. For children, developmental screening is also recommended at this stage.
At levels between 20 and 44, the response escalates. A full physical exam is warranted, along with a professional environmental investigation of the home. An abdominal X-ray may be ordered to check whether a child has swallowed paint chips or other lead-containing objects.
At 45 and above, the situation is urgent. A detailed neurological exam is performed, and treatment to remove lead from the body may begin. Hospitalization is considered if the home isn’t lead-safe and no alternative housing is available, or if the source of exposure hasn’t been identified. Symptoms like confusion, seizures, persistent vomiting, or abdominal pain at any level warrant immediate hospital care.
Which Surfaces and Areas to Prioritize
If you’re testing paint, focus on surfaces that get friction or impact: window sills and frames, door frames, staircase railings, and porches. These areas generate lead dust as painted surfaces rub against each other. Peeling or chipping paint anywhere in the home is also a priority, especially at child height.
For water, test from the tap you use most for drinking and cooking. Run the water for about 30 seconds before collecting your sample if you want to test what you’d normally drink. To test for the worst-case scenario, collect a “first draw” sample from water that has been sitting in the pipes for at least six hours (first thing in the morning works well). Lead leaches into water that sits in contact with old pipes, so first-draw samples typically show the highest concentrations.
Soil around the exterior of older homes can also contain lead from decades of exterior paint weathering. Soil test kits are available through most university agricultural extension programs for a small fee, and this is worth doing if you have children who play in the yard or if you’re growing a vegetable garden near the foundation.
