Traveling with frozen breast milk is completely doable, whether you’re flying across the country for work or driving to visit family. The key is keeping it frozen solid (or close to it) for the entire trip, which means choosing the right cooler, packing it correctly, and knowing the rules at airport security. Here’s how to handle every step.

How Long Frozen Milk Stays Safe in Transit

The CDC says breast milk stored in an insulated cooler with frozen ice packs is safe for up to 24 hours. That’s the window for a standard cooler with regular ice packs. High-performance coolers with dry ice or specialized cooling technology can extend that significantly, some holding temperature for 60 to 90 hours.

Once you arrive at your destination, you have three options: use the milk right away, refrigerate it, or refreeze it. If the milk has partially thawed but still contains ice crystals, it can safely go back in the freezer. If it has fully thawed but still feels cold, move it to the refrigerator and use it within one day. Fully thawed milk that has warmed up should be discarded.
