A blister on the bottom of your foot can make every step painful, but most heal naturally within three to seven days with the right care. The key decision is whether to leave it intact or drain it, and that depends almost entirely on how much pain it’s causing you.
Leave It Intact When You Can
If the blister isn’t causing significant pain, your best move is to keep it from popping. The unbroken skin over a blister acts as a natural barrier against bacteria and dramatically lowers your risk of infection. Your body handles the rest on its own: new skin grows underneath, the fluid slowly reabsorbs, and the top layer dries and peels off.
The challenge with blisters on the sole of your foot is that you’re constantly putting weight on them. To protect an intact blister, cover it with a nonstick gauze bandage and consider cutting a piece of moleskin or foam padding into a donut shape that surrounds the blister without pressing on it. This redistributes pressure to the skin around the blister rather than directly on it. Avoid using moleskin directly on top of the blister, as it can stick to the blister roof and tear it when you remove it.
How to Drain a Blister Safely
If the blister is large or too painful to walk on, draining it can bring immediate relief. The goal is to release the fluid while keeping the overlying skin completely in place. That loose skin acts as a protective covering for the raw tissue underneath, and removing it exposes you to infection and significantly more pain.
Here’s how to do it:
- Clean the blister and surrounding skin with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.
- Sterilize a needle by wiping it with rubbing alcohol.
- Puncture the blister near its edge in several spots. Multiple small punctures drain more effectively than one hole, especially since the blister will refill if only one opening seals shut.
- Gently press the fluid out without peeling away the overlying skin.
- Apply petroleum jelly over the drained blister and cover it with a nonstick gauze bandage.
Check the area daily. Reapply petroleum jelly and a fresh bandage each time. If you notice a rash forming around the area, stop using the ointment and switch to a plain bandage.
Choosing the Right Bandage
The type of covering you use matters, especially on the bottom of your foot where friction and pressure are constant. If the blister roof is still mostly intact (whether you drained it or left it alone), a simple gauze bandage provides enough protection without disturbing the skin underneath.
If the blister roof has torn off or worn away, hydrocolloid blister bandages are a better option. These create a moist healing environment over the exposed skin, which speeds up recovery and cushions the area. They also stick well and hold up better under the friction of walking than standard adhesive bandages. You can find them at most pharmacies, often labeled specifically as blister bandages.
Signs of Infection
Most foot blisters heal without complications, but because the sole of your foot is in constant contact with shoes and the ground, infection is a real possibility. Watch for increasing redness that spreads beyond the blister’s edge, pus or cloudy fluid replacing the clear fluid that was originally inside, warmth or swelling that gets worse instead of better, and increasing pain after the first day or two. Fever or red streaks radiating from the blister are more serious signs that warrant prompt medical attention.
Walking and Activity During Healing
You don’t need to stay off your feet entirely, but you do need to minimize friction on the blister. Wear shoes with enough room that they don’t press directly on the area. If possible, choose softer, more flexible footwear over stiff shoes for the first few days. Cushioned insoles can help distribute pressure more evenly across your sole.
Most blisters heal within three to seven days. You can typically return to full activity once new skin has formed underneath and the old blister roof has dried and started to peel naturally. Rushing back into the activity that caused the blister, whether that’s running, hiking, or wearing specific shoes, before healing is complete often results in a second, more painful blister in the same spot.
Preventing Foot Blisters From Coming Back
Friction and moisture are the two factors behind nearly every foot blister. Addressing both will prevent most recurrences.
Sock choice makes a real difference. Acrylic or polypropylene socks reduce friction against the skin better than cotton, which absorbs moisture and holds it against your foot. A two-layer sock system, with a thin polyester liner under a thicker wool or polypropylene sock, reduces the shearing forces that separate skin layers and cause blisters. Blended socks containing merino wool and polypropylene store nearly three times more moisture than pure polypropylene, which can make them more comfortable but potentially increases blister risk during extended activity.
Shoes that fit properly are equally important. Footwear that’s too tight creates constant pressure, while shoes that are too loose allow your foot to slide and generate friction. If you’re breaking in new shoes, do it gradually rather than wearing them for a long day right away.
Keeping your feet dry also helps. Foot powder has been shown to lower skin hydration and reduce blister formation more effectively than other commercial blister prevention products. Lubricants like petroleum jelly or anti-chafing balms applied to blister-prone areas can reduce friction in the short term, though they wear off and need reapplication during longer activities. Neoprene insoles are another option that can reduce the friction between your foot and the shoe itself.
If you have diabetes or poor circulation, treat any foot blister with extra caution. Reduced sensation in the feet means blisters can go unnoticed and worsen, and slower healing increases the risk of infection. In these cases, having a healthcare provider evaluate even a small blister is a reasonable precaution.
