How to Treat Dark Circles Under Eyes: What Works

Dark circles under the eyes have several distinct causes, and the most effective fix depends on which type you’re dealing with. Some dark circles come from excess pigment in the skin, others from blood vessels showing through thin skin, and many from shadows cast by the natural contours of your face. Most people have a combination. Figuring out your type is the first step toward actually improving them.

What Type of Dark Circles You Have

Dark circles fall into three main categories, each with a different color and cause. Pigmented dark circles appear brown and result from your skin producing extra melanin in the under-eye area. Vascular dark circles look blue, pink, or purple and happen when blood vessels become visible through the thin skin beneath your eyes. Structural dark circles are actually shadows created by the shape of your face, often from hollowing beneath the eye (tear troughs), under-eye bags, or loss of fat and bone volume that comes with aging.

You can do a quick test at home. Gently stretch the skin below your lower eyelid with a finger. If the dark color stays the same, you’re looking at true pigmentation. If the darkness disappears or fades, it’s a shadow from the contour of your face. If the purple or blue color actually gets worse when you stretch, the cause is likely thin skin or visible blood vessels underneath. Many people have a mix of two or all three types, which is why a single product rarely solves the problem completely.

Topical Treatments That Work

For pigment-related dark circles, ingredients that brighten skin and reduce melanin production are your best options. Vitamin C is one of the most effective. It works as an antioxidant that interrupts melanin formation and gradually evens out skin tone. Eye creams typically use concentrations around 5%, which is strong enough to show results while being gentle on the delicate under-eye area. Look for products labeled with “pure” or “stabilized” vitamin C, since the ingredient breaks down quickly when exposed to air and light.

Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, thickens the skin over time by boosting cell turnover and collagen production. This helps with both pigmented and vascular dark circles: it fades excess melanin and makes the skin less translucent so blood vessels don’t show through as easily. Start with a low-concentration retinol eye product (0.25% to 0.5%) and use it every other night at first, since the under-eye skin is thinner and more reactive than the rest of your face. Irritation, flaking, and dryness are common in the first few weeks but typically settle down.

Caffeine-containing eye creams are widely marketed for puffiness and dark circles. The theory is that caffeine constricts dilated blood vessels, reducing the blue-purple color underneath. Research on this is more nuanced than the marketing suggests. One study found that the cooling effect of gel-based eye products was actually the main driver of puffiness reduction, not the caffeine itself. Only about 24% of volunteers in the study showed a measurable benefit from caffeine beyond what the cooling gel base provided. That said, a chilled caffeine eye cream can still offer temporary visual improvement through the cold temperature alone.

Cold Compresses and Tea Bags

Placing something cold on your under-eye area does reduce puffiness and can temporarily minimize the appearance of vascular dark circles. Cold causes blood vessels to constrict, which makes them less visible through the skin. Chilled spoons, cold damp cloths, or gel eye masks kept in the refrigerator all work. The effect lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.

Chilled tea bags are a popular home remedy, and they do help, though probably not for the reason most people think. The benefit comes primarily from the cold temperature and the evaporative cooling of the damp tea bag rather than from caffeine penetrating the skin. Still, it’s a free, low-risk option. Use caffeinated tea (black or green), steep the bags briefly, then refrigerate them for 15 to 20 minutes before placing them on closed eyes for 10 minutes.

Sun Protection Matters More Than You Think

UV exposure is one of the biggest triggers for pigmented dark circles. Sunlight stimulates melanin production, and the under-eye skin is especially vulnerable because it’s thinner than the rest of your face. Dermatologists consider broad-spectrum sunscreen (covering both UVA and UVB rays) the first line of both treatment and prevention for pigmentation-driven dark circles. Apply a mineral sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to the under-eye area daily. Mineral formulas based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are generally better tolerated around the eyes than chemical sunscreens, which can sting and cause irritation on this delicate skin. Sunglasses with large lenses add a physical barrier that helps as well.

Sleep, Allergies, and Other Lifestyle Factors

Sleep deprivation doesn’t cause dark circles directly, but it makes them more noticeable. When you’re tired, your skin looks paler, which increases the contrast with dark areas underneath the eyes. Fluid can also pool around the eyes when you’re lying down for long periods or not sleeping well, creating puffiness that casts shadows. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated on an extra pillow helps fluid drain away from the face overnight.

Allergies are an underappreciated cause. Nasal congestion from seasonal or environmental allergies dilates blood vessels around the nose and eyes, creating a dark, puffy appearance sometimes called “allergic shiners.” If your dark circles are worse during allergy season or accompanied by itchiness and sneezing, treating the underlying allergy with an antihistamine can visibly reduce them. Rubbing itchy eyes also worsens pigmentation over time by creating low-grade inflammation that triggers melanin deposits.

Dehydration, alcohol, and high-sodium diets can all increase fluid retention and puffiness around the eyes. Staying well-hydrated and limiting salt intake the evening before an important day can make a noticeable difference by morning.

Chemical Peels for the Under-Eye Area

Light chemical peels can reduce pigmented dark circles by removing the outer layers of skin and encouraging fresh, more evenly toned skin to replace them. For the delicate skin around the eyes, dermatologists use light to medium-depth peels. These typically involve glycolic acid at concentrations of 40% to 70%, or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) at 20% to 35%. These are not the same as the peel pads you buy at a drugstore. They’re performed in a clinical setting because the margin for error around the eyes is small. Deep peels are avoided near the eyes entirely due to the risk of scarring that can pull the lower eyelid down.

Results from light peels are gradual. Most people need a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart, with mild redness and flaking for several days after each session. Peels work best for brown, pigment-based dark circles and do little for the vascular or structural types.

Laser Treatments

Laser therapy targets dark circles that haven’t responded to topical treatments. For pigmented dark circles, Q-switched lasers deliver short pulses of energy that break up melanin deposits in the skin. A typical course involves around four sessions spaced one month apart. Some practitioners combine laser treatment with topical brightening agents to reduce the risk of rebound pigmentation, which is especially important for people with darker skin tones who are more prone to post-inflammatory darkening.

For dark circles driven by thin skin, wrinkling, or loss of skin density, fractional CO2 lasers can help by stimulating collagen production and thickening the skin over time. These are more aggressive treatments with longer recovery periods (typically a week or more of redness and peeling), but they address both texture and the translucency that makes blood vessels visible.

Tear Trough Fillers for Hollow Under-Eyes

If your dark circles are mainly caused by a hollow groove beneath the eye, no cream or laser will fix the underlying problem. That shadow is structural, created by volume loss in the tear trough. Hyaluronic acid fillers can restore that lost volume, immediately reducing the shadow and creating a smoother transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek.

The procedure is quick. On average, about 0.45 mL of filler is injected per side, which is less than half a syringe. Results last longer than most people expect. While the commonly cited duration is 6 to 12 months, retrospective data shows significant improvement persisting up to 18 months after treatment, with objective volume measurements showing augmentation lasting an average of about 14 months. Patient satisfaction rates are consistently high across studies, regardless of the specific injection technique used.

The under-eye area is one of the trickiest spots to inject, however. Risks include bruising, puffiness, and in rare cases, a bluish discoloration called the Tyndall effect if filler is placed too superficially. Choosing an experienced injector who regularly performs tear trough treatments significantly reduces these risks.

What to Realistically Expect

Dark circles rarely disappear completely, but they can be meaningfully improved. The most effective approach usually combines strategies: a retinol or vitamin C eye cream for daily use, consistent sunscreen, attention to sleep and allergies, and a professional treatment if the topical approach isn’t enough. Vascular dark circles respond best to retinol (which thickens skin over time) and cold compresses for quick fixes. Pigmented circles improve with vitamin C, sunscreen, and peels. Structural hollowing needs filler or, in some cases, fat grafting.

Give topical treatments at least 8 to 12 weeks before judging whether they’re working. Skin cell turnover takes time, and the under-eye area is slow to change. Consistency matters more than the price tag on the product.
