Treating mold exposure in cats involves removing the cat from the contaminated environment, decontaminating their fur, and working with a veterinarian to address symptoms ranging from respiratory distress to liver damage. The specific treatment depends on whether your cat inhaled mold spores, ingested contaminated food, or developed a fungal infection, but the first step is always the same: get your cat away from the mold source.
Recognizing Mold Exposure Symptoms
Mold affects cats in two distinct ways. Mycotoxins (poisons produced by mold) can cause systemic illness when inhaled or eaten, while mold spores themselves can take root and grow as actual fungal infections in the lungs, sinuses, or skin. The symptoms overlap but the treatments differ, so knowing what you’re dealing with matters.
Cats exposed to mold toxins often show loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. More serious exposure, particularly to aflatoxins found in contaminated food, can cause jaundice (yellowing of the gums and eyes), bleeding, and depression. Black mold (Stachybotrys) is especially dangerous because its toxins weaken the tiny blood vessels in the lungs, which can rupture under stress and cause internal bleeding.
Neurological symptoms are also possible. Certain mold species produce tremor-causing compounds that lead to continuous shaking, loss of coordination, hyperexcitability, and in severe cases, seizures and collapse. Chronic, low-level exposure is sneakier. Your cat may simply seem “off” for weeks: poor coat quality, weight loss, reduced energy, and increased susceptibility to other infections because mold suppresses the immune system.
Removing Mold From Your Cat’s Fur
If your cat has been in a moldy environment, their fur is likely carrying spores. Those spores can reinfect your cat and spread contamination through your home, so decontaminating the coat is an important early step.
Give your cat a bath using an antifungal or bio-balancing pet shampoo designed to remove mold spores and mycotoxins. Plan to shampoo at least three times during this initial cleaning, rinsing thoroughly between each wash. After the final shampoo, do a follow-up rinse with a diluted solution of one gallon of water mixed with four tablespoons of the antifungal shampoo, then let your cat dry in a clean, mold-free area.
For cats that were heavily contaminated, or if anyone in the household is highly sensitive to mold, a close shave of the fur may be necessary. This isn’t a cosmetic trim. It means getting as close to the skin as possible so spores have nowhere to hide. Going forward, if your cat goes outdoors, brush their fur before they come inside and consider wiping them down with pet-safe wipes to prevent recontamination. Maintenance baths every other week help keep spore levels low.
What Veterinary Treatment Looks Like
Your vet will tailor treatment to the type and severity of your cat’s mold problem. For toxic exposure (mycotoxicosis), treatment is primarily supportive: fluids to prevent dehydration, anti-nausea medication, nutritional support, and close monitoring of organ function, particularly the liver. There is no antidote for most mycotoxins, so the goal is to keep your cat stable while their body clears the poison.
For actual fungal infections, where mold is growing in or on your cat’s body, antifungal medication is the cornerstone of treatment. Itraconazole is one of the most commonly used options for cats, typically given orally with food once or twice daily depending on how invasive the infection is. Fluconazole is another option, particularly for infections that have spread to the brain or nervous system, since it penetrates those areas well.
More aggressive infections, like invasive aspergillosis in the sinuses, often require a combination approach. A vet may need to physically remove fungal material through an endoscopic procedure, then follow up with both topical and oral antifungal treatment. Recovery from invasive fungal infections is slow. Some antifungal courses last months, and stopping treatment too early is a common cause of recurrence.
Side Effects of Antifungal Medications
Long-term antifungal treatment requires regular veterinary check-ins because these medications can affect other organs. Itraconazole and similar drugs can stress the liver, so your vet will likely run blood panels periodically to catch any problems early. Some cats lose their appetite on these medications or develop mild digestive upset.
Certain newer antifungals present unique risks in cats. Voriconazole, for example, works safely in some individual cats but causes severe neurological side effects in others, making it unpredictable. Your vet will weigh these risks based on the specific fungus involved and your cat’s overall health.
How Vets Diagnose Mold-Related Illness
Diagnosing mold exposure can be tricky because the symptoms mimic many other conditions. If your vet suspects a fungal problem, several testing options exist. Urine testing for fungal antigens (proteins shed by the mold’s cell wall) is often the most sensitive and easiest to collect. Blood tests can also detect these antigens or measure your cat’s antibody response to specific fungi.
For infections in the lungs or sinuses, tissue samples examined under a microscope or sent for culture provide the most definitive answers, though fungal cultures can take up to six weeks to return results. DNA-based testing (PCR) is faster and can identify the exact species of mold involved, which helps your vet choose the right antifungal. In some cases, special staining techniques are needed on tissue samples because fungal organisms can be easy to miss with standard methods.
Cleaning Your Home Safely
Treatment will fail if your cat returns to a moldy environment, so remediation at home is part of the treatment plan. For small areas of visible mold, distilled white vinegar is an effective antifungal cleaner that is far safer around cats than bleach or commercial mold killers. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar for a general-purpose spray that works on hard surfaces like tile, vinyl, cabinets, and sinks. Lemon juice offers a milder alternative with similar antifungal properties.
These pet-safer options are not completely risk-free if your cat licks treated surfaces, so keep your cat out of the room until surfaces have dried. For large-scale mold problems, particularly inside walls, HVAC systems, or under flooring, professional remediation is necessary. No amount of surface cleaning will solve a structural mold problem, and continued exposure will undermine any medical treatment your cat is receiving.
Replace any soft items that were in the contaminated area: cat beds, fabric toys, scratching posts with carpet, and litter mats. Mold spores embed deeply in porous materials and survive regular washing. Run a HEPA air purifier in the rooms your cat uses most, and fix whatever moisture source allowed the mold to grow in the first place, whether that’s a leaky pipe, poor ventilation, or high humidity.
