How to Treat Pododermatitis on Your Dog’s Paws

Pododermatitis in dogs is inflammation of the paw skin, and treating it effectively means addressing both the visible symptoms and the underlying cause. Most cases involve a primary trigger like allergies or mites, combined with a secondary bacterial or yeast infection that makes the itching and swelling worse. Without identifying that root cause, treatments will only provide temporary relief before symptoms return.

What’s Actually Causing the Problem

Pododermatitis isn’t a single disease. It’s a pattern of inflammation that can stem from several different triggers, and your dog may have more than one working at the same time. The most common culprits are environmental allergies (pollen, mold, dust mites), food sensitivities, contact allergies from things like lawn chemicals, and Demodex mites. Each of these creates irritation in the paw skin, which then becomes vulnerable to secondary infections from bacteria and yeast that are normally present in small amounts.

Demodex mites are an especially common cause that’s easy to overlook. Dogs with paw-specific mite infestations often show darkened skin, redness, hair loss, and small blackhead-like bumps between the toes. This looks similar to allergic pododermatitis, which is why diagnostic testing matters before jumping into treatment.

If your dog’s paw problems flare up seasonally, environmental allergies are the likely driver. If symptoms persist year-round without a clear seasonal pattern, food sensitivity moves higher on the list. Contact allergies are worth considering in dogs that seem resistant to standard allergy treatments. Ruling out a contact allergy takes only 7 to 10 days of avoiding the suspected trigger, compared to 2 to 3 months for a proper food elimination trial.

Treating Secondary Infections First

Before addressing the underlying cause, any active infection on the paws needs to be controlled. Bacterial and yeast infections compound the itching and inflammation, creating a cycle where your dog licks and chews, introducing more bacteria, which causes more irritation.

For surface-level infections, antiseptic foot soaks are one of the most practical at-home treatments. You can use diluted povidone-iodine (Betadine) mixed with water to a light iced-tea color, or chlorhexidine solution diluted to a light blue color. Place your dog’s paws in the solution for 1 to 5 minutes, making sure to work the liquid between the toes where moisture and debris collect. A shallow plastic tub, bowl, or even a kiddie pool works well depending on your dog’s size. Pat the paws dry thoroughly afterward, since trapped moisture will make things worse.

Deep bacterial infections in the paw tissue are a different situation. These typically require systemic antibiotics chosen based on a culture and sensitivity test, and treatment often takes 4 to 6 weeks. This is significantly longer than a standard course of antibiotics because the tissue between the toes has limited blood flow, making it harder for medication to reach the infection site. Stopping treatment too early is one of the most common reasons pododermatitis keeps coming back.

Managing Allergies Long-Term

If allergies are the root cause, long-term management is the goal rather than a one-time cure. Two prescription options have become standard for controlling the itch and inflammation that drive allergic pododermatitis. One is a daily oral medication that blocks the specific immune signals responsible for allergic itching and skin inflammation. The other is a monthly injection that neutralizes a key itch-signaling protein in the bloodstream. Both reduce itching and skin inflammation to a similar degree, and dogs that don’t respond well to one can often switch to the other with maintained results.

For food-related cases, an elimination diet is the only reliable way to identify the trigger. Your vet will likely recommend a diet made with extensively broken-down proteins, or in stubborn cases, one built from individual amino acids. The trial period runs 2 to 3 months, during which your dog eats nothing else, including treats, flavored medications, and table scraps. It’s a commitment, but it’s the clearest path to identifying whether food is driving the problem.

Reducing Allergen Exposure at Home

For dogs with environmental allergies, what you do after every walk makes a real difference. Wipe your dog’s paws with warm water or hypoallergenic pet wipes as soon as you come indoors. This removes grass pollen, mold spores, and road residue before they have time to settle into the skin between the paw pads. If your dog tolerates it, a quick warm-water rinse is even more effective than wiping alone. Dry the paws completely afterward to prevent moisture-related irritation.

Don’t stop at the paws. Pollen and plant debris cling to the belly, legs, and tail, and when your dog lies down, those allergens transfer right back to the paws. A damp cloth or hypoallergenic wipe over these areas after walks adds another layer of protection. For dogs with particularly sensitive skin, look for wipes specifically labeled as hypoallergenic to avoid disrupting the skin’s natural barrier.

Dealing With Interdigital Cysts

Chronic pododermatitis sometimes produces firm, painful swellings between the toes called interdigital furuncles (often referred to as interdigital cysts, though they aren’t true cysts). These are deep tissue infections that have walled themselves off, and they tend to rupture, drain, and refill repeatedly.

When these don’t respond to medical treatment, CO2 laser removal is one option. The laser vaporizes only the diseased tissue while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact, so the normal paw structure is preserved. The procedure involves minimal bleeding and nerve pain and heals relatively quickly. Severe cases may require more than one laser session.

Traditional surgery is a more aggressive alternative that removes the entire affected webbing between the toes and sutures the toes together. This can eliminate the problem more completely, but it permanently changes the paw’s structure and can lead to orthopedic issues down the road. It’s generally reserved for cases where less invasive options have failed.

Protecting Paws During Treatment

While your dog’s paws are healing, you may need to bandage them to keep medication in place or prevent licking. Paw bandaging carries real risks if done incorrectly. A bandage that’s too tight or applied unevenly can restrict blood flow enough to cause tissue damage, and in severe cases, limb loss. Materials that are too narrow can act like a tourniquet, especially if the paw swells after bandaging.

If bandaging is necessary, use three layers: a sterile contact layer against the wound, an absorbent middle layer to manage drainage, and a protective outer wrap. Always wrap from the toes upward toward the body, never starting at the top of the leg. Keep the wrap snug but not tight, and avoid stretching elastic tape to its limit. Check the bandage frequently for signs of swelling, coolness, skin discoloration, or odor, all of which signal circulation problems. Replace any bandage that gets wet, dirty, or shifts out of position.

An Elizabethan collar (cone) or inflatable recovery collar is often a simpler and safer alternative to bandaging, especially for preventing your dog from licking medicated paws. Constant licking reintroduces bacteria and removes topical treatments, so breaking this cycle is essential to recovery regardless of the approach you use.
