One important caution: overusing acute pain relievers (taking them more than two or three days per week) can create rebound headaches that layer on top of your post-concussion headaches, making everything worse. If you find yourself reaching for over-the-counter painkillers most days, that’s a signal to shift toward preventive treatment instead.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Mood Symptoms

Energy Management and Cognitive Pacing
Fatigue and cognitive overload are constant challenges during recovery, and how you manage your daily energy has a direct impact on symptom severity. A useful framework is the “energy bank account” model: you have a limited balance each day, and every activity is a withdrawal. If you spend it all by noon, you’ll be symptomatic and unproductive for the rest of the day.
The practical strategy is built on what clinicians call the “3 Ps”:
- Plan: Map out your day the night before. Spread demanding tasks across the week rather than clustering them. Schedule harder activities during whatever part of the day you tend to have the most energy. Gather everything you need before starting a task so you’re not wasting energy on logistics.
- Pace: Work in short bursts with built-in rest breaks. Give yourself more time than you think you need for each task. Build “brain breaks” into your schedule, brief periods of quiet, low-stimulation rest between cognitive demands.
- Prioritize: Not everything needs to happen today. Identify what truly matters and let the rest go. Some activities drain energy faster than you’d expect: phone conversations, crowded or noisy environments, screen time, driving in heavy traffic, and anything requiring sustained concentration like filling out forms or planning events.
This isn’t about avoiding life. It’s about distributing effort so you can do more overall without crashing. Most people find that disciplined pacing actually lets them accomplish more in a week than pushing through and paying for it with two-day symptom flares.
Building the Right Care Team
Because post-concussion syndrome affects so many systems, the most effective treatment plans involve multiple specialists working together. A concussion clinic or brain injury program typically coordinates this, but you can also assemble a team through referrals.
The core team often includes a physician who manages the overall plan and any medications (often a sports medicine doctor, neurologist, or physiatrist), a neuropsychologist who conducts cognitive testing to identify specific deficits in attention and memory, a vestibular physical therapist for balance and dizziness, and a neuro-optometrist for vision problems.
