Rain rot is a bacterial skin infection that clears up reliably with a consistent routine of scab removal, medicated bathing, and keeping the skin dry. Most mild to moderate cases heal within two to three weeks of home treatment. The key is understanding why the infection takes hold so you can treat it effectively and stop it from coming back.
What Causes Rain Rot
Rain rot is caused by a bacterium called Dermatophilus congolensis, which behaves unlike most bacteria. It produces tiny motile spores called zoospores that are attracted to the skin’s surface by carbon dioxide your horse naturally exhales through the skin. When the skin’s protective barrier is intact, those spores can’t do much. But prolonged moisture from rain, high humidity, or sweat breaks down that barrier and gives the spores an entry point.
Once the spores reach compromised skin, they germinate and produce branching filaments that penetrate the living layer of the epidermis, spreading outward from the initial infection site. This triggers inflammation, which leads to the characteristic crusty scabs. Moisture does double duty here: it weakens the skin’s defenses and it helps existing lesions release more spores, which then colonize new areas. That’s why rain rot can seem to explode across a horse’s back and rump during a stretch of wet weather.
How to Identify Rain Rot
The classic sign is raised crusty scabs along the topline, back, rump, and sometimes the neck and face. In horses with long winter coats, the hair mats together underneath the crusts, and pulling a scab away often lifts a tuft of hair with it, revealing yellow-green pus and raw, pinkish skin underneath. This “paintbrush” appearance, where the removed scab looks like a small clump of hair dipped in something, is the hallmark of rain rot.
In summer, when hair is short, the presentation looks different. Matting and thick scab formation are less common. You may instead see small bumps, patchy hair loss, or thin crusts that are easier to miss during a quick grooming session. The infection tends to appear in fall and winter, when prolonged wet conditions are most likely.
Rain Rot vs. Ringworm
These two conditions are easy to confuse because both cause crusty, hairless patches. Rain rot produces thicker crusts than ringworm, and it follows the pattern of where rain sits on the horse’s body. Ringworm is actually a fungal infection, not bacterial, and its lesions often appear as small circular areas of hair loss, sometimes in a ring pattern. The distinction matters because the treatments are different. A veterinarian can confirm rain rot by examining plucked scabs under a microscope, while ringworm requires a fungal culture to diagnose.
Step-by-Step Treatment
Effective treatment combines mechanical removal of scabs with antimicrobial bathing on a consistent schedule. Here’s the process:
Start by gently brushing away any loose crusts. Don’t aggressively rip off scabs that are firmly attached, as this is painful and can damage healthy tissue underneath. Soaking the area first with warm water softens stubborn crusts and makes removal easier. Some horse owners apply a light coat of mineral oil to particularly thick scabs and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before attempting removal.
Once loose crusts are cleared, wash the affected areas with an antimicrobial shampoo containing either chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine. Both are effective against Dermatophilus. The critical step most people skip: leave the shampoo on the skin for a full 10 minutes before rinsing. This contact time is what actually kills the bacteria. Rinse thoroughly afterward, since residual soap can irritate already-damaged skin.
For the first week, repeat this process daily. After seven days, reduce the frequency to every three to four days until the skin has fully healed. You should see improvement within the first week, with new hair growth becoming visible within two to three weeks. If the lesions are spreading or not improving after a week of consistent treatment, that’s a sign to involve your veterinarian. Very severe or widespread cases may require systemic antibiotics, typically penicillin, prescribed by a vet.
Drying Is as Important as Washing
Because moisture is what fuels the entire infection cycle, keeping your horse dry between treatments is just as important as the medicated baths. After each wash, towel dry the affected areas thoroughly. If the weather allows, let your horse stand in the sun to air dry completely before putting on a blanket or turning out. Putting a blanket on a damp horse creates exactly the warm, moist environment Dermatophilus thrives in.
During active treatment, provide shelter from rain. If your horse lives outside, a run-in shed or temporary cover is enough. The goal is to break the moisture cycle that lets zoospores keep spreading to new skin.
Preventing Spread to Other Horses
Rain rot spreads through shared equipment. Zoospores survive on grooming tools, saddle pads, blankets, and anything else that contacts an infected horse’s skin. Each horse should have a dedicated set of brushes, and you should avoid sharing tack during an active outbreak.
Disinfect grooming tools by first washing them with regular dish soap and water to remove dirt and debris, then soaking them in a bleach solution of eight ounces of household bleach per gallon of water. This is one of the most effective and inexpensive disinfectants available. Wash saddle pads and blankets in hot water between uses on an infected horse.
If you handle an infected horse and then groom a healthy one, change gloves or wash your hands between animals. The bacteria doesn’t infect humans in any meaningful way, but your hands can carry spores from one horse to another.
Long-Term Prevention
Horses that get rain rot once are likely to get it again if the conditions that allowed the initial infection don’t change. Prevention comes down to managing moisture exposure and maintaining skin health.
- Shelter access: Horses that can get out of prolonged rain are far less susceptible. Even partial shelter reduces the duration of skin wetting that allows zoospore penetration.
- Blanket management: If you blanket your horse, check underneath regularly. Trapped moisture and heat under a blanket can create ideal conditions for Dermatophilus. Remove wet blankets promptly and make sure the coat is dry before re-blanketing.
- Grooming routine: Regular brushing removes dirt and dead skin that can trap moisture against the surface. It also gives you a chance to catch early lesions before they spread.
- Insect control: Biting insects damage the skin barrier, giving zoospores easier access. Fly control during warmer months reduces one of the contributing factors.
- Nutrition and immune health: Horses with compromised immune systems are more susceptible. Adequate nutrition, particularly sufficient zinc and copper, supports normal skin repair and defense.
Rain rot looks alarming, especially when it covers a large area, but it responds well to consistent treatment. The bacteria can’t survive on dry, healthy skin. Remove the crusts, kill the bacteria with medicated washes, keep the horse dry, and the skin will heal itself.
