Swollen hands and feet usually respond well to a combination of elevation, movement, dietary changes, and compression. The swelling happens when fluid leaks out of your blood vessels and collects in the surrounding tissue faster than your lymphatic system can drain it away. Most cases stem from something temporary like prolonged sitting, heat, high salt intake, or pregnancy, but persistent or sudden swelling can signal a more serious underlying condition that needs medical attention.

Why Fluid Builds Up in Your Hands and Feet

Your body constantly moves fluid between your bloodstream and the tissue around it. This exchange is controlled by pressure inside your blood vessels and the concentration of proteins in your blood. Swelling occurs when something tips that balance: higher pressure in the vessels pushes more fluid out, lower protein levels in the blood fail to pull fluid back in, or the lymphatic vessels that normally drain excess fluid become blocked or overwhelmed.

Most excess sodium doesn’t come from the salt shaker. It hides in processed foods, restaurant meals, canned soups, deli meats, bread, and condiments. Reading nutrition labels and cooking more meals at home gives you the most control. Potassium-rich foods like bananas, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens help your kidneys excrete sodium more efficiently.

Staying Hydrated (but Not Overdoing It)

It sounds counterintuitive, but drinking enough water actually helps reduce swelling. When you’re mildly dehydrated, your body compensates by retaining more fluid. Staying well-hydrated keeps your kidneys flushing sodium and waste products efficiently. There’s no need to force excessive amounts of water, though. Drinking far too much can dilute sodium levels in your blood, a condition that causes its own type of cellular swelling. For most people, drinking when thirsty and aiming for pale yellow urine is a reliable guide.

One thing worth knowing: common over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and naproxen can cause your kidneys to retain water. If you’re taking these regularly and noticing puffiness in your hands or feet, that connection is worth exploring.

Compression Garments

When home measures aren’t enough, doctors typically prescribe diuretics, medications that help your kidneys release more sodium and water into your urine. These work well for swelling caused by heart failure, kidney problems, or liver disease, though the specific type prescribed depends on the underlying cause. Diuretics reduce the total volume of fluid in your body, which lowers the pressure that forces fluid into your tissues.

For conditions like heart failure or liver disease, treating the root cause is just as important as managing the swelling itself. Diuretics address the symptom, but controlling blood pressure, managing heart function, or treating kidney disease prevents the fluid from accumulating again.
