Vent gleet is a fungal or bacterial infection of the cloaca, the shared opening where a chicken passes droppings and eggs. Treatment involves a combination of topical antifungal care, dietary changes to restore healthy gut bacteria, and thorough coop cleaning to prevent reinfection. Most birds start improving within a few days, but full recovery typically takes 10 to 14 days.
Recognizing Vent Gleet
The hallmark signs are a white or yellowish slimy discharge around the vent, redness and swelling of the surrounding skin, and feather loss in the area. The feathers near the vent often look matted and dirty, and there’s usually a foul smell. Affected hens may stop laying or produce eggs with abnormal shells.
It’s worth knowing that vent gleet looks different from egg binding, which is sometimes confused with it. An egg-bound hen will be lethargic, strain repeatedly, and may walk with a penguin-like gait, but she won’t have the characteristic discharge. If your hen’s abdomen looks noticeably swollen rather than just her vent area being inflamed, that points more toward egg peritonitis, a serious condition that needs veterinary attention.
What Causes It
Vent gleet isn’t a single disease. It’s a gastrointestinal condition that can be triggered by fungi, yeast, bacteria, protozoa, or parasites. Stress is one of the biggest predisposing factors. When a chicken is stressed, whether from overcrowding, extreme weather, a change in flock dynamics, or poor nutrition, it raises the pH in her digestive tract. That shift creates an environment where yeast and harmful organisms can overgrow, leading to infection in the cloaca and nearby organs including the rectum and, in hens, the oviduct.
Dirty, wet bedding, contaminated water sources, and a diet too high in sugar or starch can all contribute. Birds that have recently been on antibiotics are also more vulnerable, since antibiotics wipe out the beneficial bacteria that normally keep yeast in check.
Step-by-Step Treatment
Clean the Vent Area
Start by gently washing the affected area with warm water. Soak the bird’s rear end in a shallow basin of warm water for 10 to 15 minutes to soften and remove any caked discharge. Pat the area completely dry afterward, since moisture encourages further fungal growth. You’ll likely need to repeat this daily until the discharge clears up.
Apply Topical Antifungal Cream
Over-the-counter antifungal creams designed for athlete’s foot work well for this. Apply a half-inch ribbon of cream directly to the inflamed vent area twice a day for 14 days. Even if the bird looks better before that, continue the full course. Stopping early is one of the most common reasons vent gleet comes back.
Address the Gut With Probiotics
Because vent gleet starts in the digestive tract, topical treatment alone often isn’t enough. Adding probiotics helps restore the balance of beneficial bacteria that suppress yeast. Plain, unsweetened yogurt mixed into feed is the simplest option. Some flock keepers have reported clearing mild cases in as few as three days with yogurt alone, though moderate to severe infections will need the antifungal cream as well. You can also use poultry-specific probiotic supplements added to water or feed.
Use a Copper Sulfate Solution for the Flock
If you suspect the infection has spread through your flock, or if the affected bird also has signs of crop problems (sour-smelling breath, a squishy or enlarged crop), a copper sulfate water treatment can help. Mississippi State University Extension recommends dissolving 1 ounce of copper sulfate and 1 tablespoon of vinegar into 15 gallons of water. Use this as the flock’s sole water source for the duration of the outbreak. An alternative method is to make a concentrated stock solution by dissolving half a pound of copper sulfate and half a cup of vinegar in 1 gallon of water, then dispensing it at 1 ounce per gallon into the drinking water.
Epsom Salt Flush for Severe Cases
For birds with significant buildup or swelling, an Epsom salt flush can help clear the digestive tract. Dissolve one teaspoon of Epsom salts in half a cup of warm water and administer it orally (using a syringe or tube) twice a day for three consecutive days. This works best as a first step before starting antifungal treatment, helping to reduce the yeast load so the medication can be more effective.
When to Expect Improvement
You should see the discharge begin to lessen and the redness start to fade within the first few days of treatment. The vent area will gradually look less swollen, and feathers will slowly begin to regrow once the skin heals. Plan on a full 10 to 14 days of active treatment depending on severity. If you see no improvement after about a week, the infection may be bacterial rather than fungal, or there could be an underlying issue like salpingitis (infection of the oviduct). At that point, a veterinarian can prescribe oral antifungal medication or antibiotics as needed. Nystatin liquid suspension given orally for 7 to 10 days is one of the more effective prescription options.
Isolate the Affected Bird
Separate any hen showing symptoms from the rest of the flock. Vent gleet can spread through contaminated droppings, shared water, and even through mating if you keep a rooster. Isolation also reduces the stress of being pecked by flockmates, since other chickens are often attracted to the red, inflamed skin. Keep the bird in a clean, dry space with fresh bedding and her own food and water until the infection fully resolves.
Clean the Coop Thoroughly
Treatment won’t stick if your bird goes back into a contaminated environment. Remove all litter, manure, feathers, and debris from the coop. Dry-clean every surface first by scraping and brushing off caked material, since disinfectant can’t penetrate through organic matter. Then wet-clean all surfaces by scrubbing with water and detergent, working from top to bottom and back to front. Rinse everything with clean water, then apply an EPA-registered poultry disinfectant according to the label directions.
Leave the coop empty and open until it’s completely dry. Fans or open doors and windows speed up the process. Replace all bedding with fresh, dry material before returning birds. Going forward, keep bedding dry and change it regularly. Wet, ammonia-heavy litter is one of the fastest ways to trigger a recurrence.
Preventing Recurrence
Diet plays a bigger role than most people realize. Cut back on treats high in sugar and starch, like bread, corn, and fruit, while the bird is recovering. These foods feed yeast growth. A balanced layer feed should make up the bulk of the diet. Adding apple cider vinegar to the water at a ratio of about one tablespoon per gallon can help maintain a slightly acidic environment in the gut that discourages yeast, though this should be used in plastic or rubber waterers since vinegar corrodes metal.
Reducing stress in the flock is equally important. Make sure birds have adequate space, access to clean water, proper ventilation, and protection from temperature extremes. Chickens that have had vent gleet once are more prone to getting it again, so keeping these environmental basics in order is the most reliable long-term prevention.
