How to Unclog Ears from Congestion: Safe Remedies

Congested ears happen when swelling in your nasal passages blocks the small tube that connects your throat to your middle ear. That tube, called the Eustachian tube, normally opens briefly when you swallow or yawn to equalize pressure on both sides of your eardrum. When a cold, allergies, or a sinus infection cause the tissue around that tube to swell, air can’t flow through, pressure builds up, and your ear feels stuffed, muffled, or painful. The good news: most cases clear up on their own or with simple techniques you can do at home.

Why Congestion Blocks Your Ears

The Eustachian tube runs from the back of your nose down to your middle ear. It’s only about the width of a pencil lead at its narrowest point, so even mild swelling can seal it shut. Colds, sinus infections, flu, and seasonal allergies all trigger inflammation in the nasal lining, and that inflammation extends to the tissue surrounding the tube opening. Once blocked, the middle ear can’t equalize its pressure with the outside air. The trapped air gets absorbed by the surrounding tissue, creating a slight vacuum that pulls the eardrum inward. That’s the plugged, underwater feeling.

The tube also drains mucus and fluid away from the middle ear. When it’s swollen shut, fluid can accumulate behind the eardrum, making hearing feel muffled and sometimes causing a dull ache. This is why ear congestion often peaks a day or two into a cold, right when nasal swelling is at its worst.

Pressure Equalization Techniques

These maneuvers physically push or pull air through the Eustachian tube to relieve that trapped-pressure feeling. They work best when congestion is mild to moderate.

Valsalva maneuver: Pinch your nostrils closed, keep your mouth shut, and gently blow through your nose. You should feel a soft pop or click as air pushes into your middle ear. The key word is gently. Blowing too hard can damage the delicate membranes of the inner ear. Keep the pressure light and don’t hold it for more than five seconds. If nothing happens, stop and try again later rather than forcing it.

Toynbee maneuver: Pinch your nostrils closed and swallow. Swallowing opens the Eustachian tubes while the closed nose compresses air against them. This is a softer alternative to the Valsalva and can be easier for people who feel nervous about blowing against a blocked nose.

Swallowing and yawning: Even without pinching your nose, repeated swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum activates the small muscles that pull the Eustachian tube open. Sipping water frequently throughout the day gives you an easy excuse to swallow often.

Home Remedies That Reduce Swelling

Since the root problem is swollen tissue around the Eustachian tube, anything that reduces nasal inflammation helps your ears drain on their own.

Steam inhalation: Breathing in warm, moist air loosens mucus and temporarily shrinks swollen nasal tissue. A hot shower works well. So does leaning over a bowl of hot water with a towel draped over your head. Ten to fifteen minutes is usually enough to feel some relief.

Saline nasal rinse: Flushing your nasal passages with a saltwater solution clears out mucus and reduces swelling around the Eustachian tube opening. You can use a squeeze bottle or neti pot with distilled or previously boiled water (never tap water). Research on saline instillation has shown improvement in roughly two-thirds of patients with Eustachian tube problems, with even better results when the issue is caught early.

Warm compress: Placing a warm, damp cloth over the affected ear for 10 to 15 minutes can ease discomfort and encourage blood flow to the area. It won’t open the tube directly, but it often takes the edge off the pain and pressure.

Stay hydrated and elevate your head: Drinking plenty of fluids keeps mucus thin and easier to drain. Propping your head up with an extra pillow at night lets gravity pull fluid away from the Eustachian tube instead of letting it pool behind the eardrum.

Over-the-Counter Medications

When home techniques aren’t enough, two types of pharmacy medications target the swelling that’s blocking your ears.

Oral decongestants (the active ingredient is usually pseudoephedrine) work by constricting blood vessels in the nasal lining, which shrinks swollen tissue and opens the Eustachian tube. Adults typically take 60 mg every four to six hours, with a maximum of 240 mg in 24 hours. Pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure and heart rate, so it’s not ideal if you have high blood pressure or heart conditions.

Decongestant nasal sprays (containing oxymetazoline or similar ingredients) deliver the effect directly to the swollen tissue and work faster than pills. The critical rule: do not use them for more than three days in a row. After about three days, the spray triggers a rebound effect called rhinitis medicamentosa, where your nasal lining swells up worse than before, creating a cycle of dependency. Stick strictly to the package instructions.

Antihistamines are most useful when allergies are driving the congestion. They reduce the allergic reaction that inflames the mucous membranes, which in turn can improve Eustachian tube function. If your ear congestion shows up alongside itchy eyes, sneezing, or seasonal patterns, an antihistamine is a reasonable first choice. For a plain cold or sinus infection, antihistamines are less effective since the swelling isn’t allergy-driven.

Ear Congestion in Children

Children’s Eustachian tubes are shorter, narrower, and more horizontal than adults’, which makes them far more prone to ear congestion and fluid buildup. The approach is similar but with important age-based restrictions.

For children under 2, do not give over-the-counter cold or decongestant medicines. Safe options include saline nasal drops to loosen mucus, a cool-mist humidifier in the bedroom, and a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator to gently suction out mucus. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen (at age-appropriate doses) can help with pain and fever. Do not prop up an infant’s crib mattress or add pillows; children under 1 should sleep on a flat surface.

For children over 2, the same humidifier and saline strategies apply, and you can add an extra pillow under the head to help drainage during sleep. For children over 1, a small amount of honey in warm water can soothe throat irritation that sometimes accompanies ear congestion. Avoid letting children drink while lying flat, as this can push fluid toward the Eustachian tube and increase infection risk.

Signs That Need Medical Attention

Most congestion-related ear clogging clears within a few days to a week as the underlying cold or allergy episode resolves. Certain symptoms, however, signal something more serious. The CDC recommends seeking medical care if you experience a fever of 102.2°F (39°C) or higher, pus or fluid draining from the ear, hearing loss, or symptoms that worsen rather than improve. Middle ear congestion that lasts more than two to three days without improvement may indicate a bacterial infection that needs antibiotics. For infants under 3 months, any fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher warrants immediate medical evaluation.
