How to Unclog Your Right Ear Fast and Safely

A clogged right ear usually comes down to one of three things: trapped fluid, earwax buildup, or pressure from swollen eustachian tubes. The fix depends on which one you’re dealing with, and figuring that out is simpler than you might think. If your ear clogged up during a cold or allergy flare, the culprit is likely inflammation. If it happened after swimming or showering, water is probably trapped inside. And if the blockage crept in gradually with muffled hearing, earwax is the most common explanation.

Figure Out Why Your Ear Is Clogged

Your ear has a narrow tube called the eustachian tube that connects the middle ear to the back of your throat. It opens and closes to equalize air pressure and drain fluid. When it swells shut, fluid and pressure build up, and your ear feels stuffed. Colds, the flu, allergies, and even acid reflux can all trigger this swelling. If your ear clogged during a flight, while driving through mountains, or after scuba diving, the rapid altitude change overwhelmed the tube’s ability to adjust, a condition called barotrauma.

Earwax is a separate issue entirely. It forms in the outer ear canal, not the middle ear, and normally migrates out on its own. But some people produce more than average, or they accidentally push it deeper with cotton swabs or earbuds. When enough wax packs together, it blocks sound and creates that plugged-up feeling.

Trapped water sits in the outer ear canal too. You’ll usually notice it right after getting your ear wet, and it often comes with a sloshing sensation when you tilt your head.

Pressure Relief for a Stuffy Ear

If your clogged ear came with a cold, allergies, or a plane ride, these techniques can coax the eustachian tube open and release the pressure.

Valsalva maneuver: Sit or lie down. Take a breath, then close your mouth and pinch your nose shut. Gently push that breath out against the seal, as if you’re straining, and hold for about 15 seconds. You should feel a soft pop as the tube opens. The key word is “gently.” Blowing too hard can damage your eardrum.

Toynbee maneuver: Pinch your nose shut and swallow. The swallowing motion naturally pulls the eustachian tube open while the pinched nose creates a slight pressure shift that helps equalize the middle ear. This one works well during airplane descent.

Swallowing and yawning: Both activate the muscles around the eustachian tube. Chewing gum or sipping water repeatedly can have the same effect, which is why flight attendants hand out candy before landing.

If allergies or a cold are keeping the tube swollen, an over-the-counter decongestant nasal spray or antihistamine can reduce the inflammation enough for these maneuvers to work. The blockage often resolves on its own once the underlying illness clears up.

How to Remove Trapped Water

Tilt your head so your right ear faces the ground, and hold it there. Gravity alone often does the job. You can gently tug on your earlobe or hop on one foot to help the water shift. If it’s stubborn, try lying on your right side for a few minutes with a towel under your ear.

A hair dryer on its lowest heat setting, held at least a foot away from your ear, can evaporate residual moisture without risking a burn. Aim the warm air toward the ear canal opening for 30 seconds or so.

For a preventive approach that also works after the fact, mix equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Pour about one teaspoon into the ear, let it sit briefly, then tilt your head to drain it out. The alcohol speeds evaporation and the vinegar discourages bacterial growth. Don’t use this if you suspect a punctured eardrum.

Softening and Removing Earwax at Home

If earwax is the problem, softening it first makes everything easier. You have a few options, all available without a prescription.

Three percent hydrogen peroxide is widely used. Lie on your left side so your right ear faces the ceiling. Use a dropper to fill the ear canal, then let the solution bubble and fizz for about one minute before tipping your head over a tissue to drain. The fizzing action breaks apart the wax. You can repeat this daily for a few days if the blockage doesn’t clear on the first try.

Carbamide peroxide drops (sold under brand names like Debrox) contain a 6.5% concentration that’s specifically formulated for earwax. The typical regimen is five drops, three times a day, for up to four days. These drops begin degrading wax almost immediately and continue working over about 40 minutes per application.

Mineral oil or olive oil work more gently. A few warm drops soften the wax over several days, allowing it to migrate out naturally. These are a good choice if peroxide-based drops irritate your skin.

Gentle Irrigation

After a day or two of softening drops, you can flush loosened wax out with a bulb syringe. Fill it with clean water warmed to body temperature, roughly 37°C (98.6°F). Water that’s too cold or too hot can cause dizziness and nausea. Tilt your head slightly, aim a gentle stream into the ear canal, and let the water flow back out into a basin. Never force the water in with strong pressure.

Do not irrigate your ear if you have a perforated eardrum, an active ear infection, or drainage coming from the ear. In those cases, skip straight to a professional.

What Not to Put in Your Ear

Cotton swabs are the most common cause of wax impaction. They push wax deeper into the canal instead of removing it. The American Academy of Otolaryngology advises against placing any object into the ear canal, and that includes bobby pins, keys, and ear candles. Ear candling has no proven benefit and carries a real risk of burns and wax dripping into the canal.

Professional Removal Options

If home methods don’t work after a week, or if the blockage is severe, a clinician can clear the ear in one visit using one of two main techniques.

Microsuction uses a small vacuum to pull wax out under direct visualization through a microscope or camera. It doesn’t involve water, which makes it the safer choice if you have a perforated eardrum, narrow ear canals, wear hearing aids, or deal with chronic wax problems. Comfort is high, and infection risk is very low.

Irrigation flushes warm water into the canal to push softened wax out. It works well for soft wax when your ear canal is healthy, but carries a slightly higher risk of dizziness and infection compared to microsuction. It’s not suitable if you have a history of ear perforations or chronic infections.

Most earwax removals take 15 to 30 minutes, and the relief is immediate. If your provider recommends softening drops for a few days before your appointment, follow through. It makes the procedure faster and more comfortable.

Signs That Need Medical Attention

Most clogged ears are harmless and temporary. But certain symptoms point to something more serious. Sudden hearing loss that comes on within hours, pain with active drainage or bleeding from the ear, recurring or persistent dizziness, and ringing in only one ear all warrant a visit to a doctor, ideally an ear, nose, and throat specialist. A hearing difference of more than 15 decibels between your two ears, or hearing loss greater than 30 decibels in both ears, also falls into this category. These can signal conditions that get harder to treat the longer you wait.

Preventing Future Blockages

If your right ear clogs repeatedly, a simple maintenance routine can break the cycle. Using a few drops of mineral oil or carbamide peroxide once a week keeps wax soft enough to exit on its own. After swimming or showering, tilt your head to drain each ear and dry the outer ear gently with a towel. Skip the cotton swabs entirely. Your ears are designed to clean themselves, and the less you interfere with that process, the less likely you are to end up with a blockage.
