Using a metal detector comes down to a few core skills: setting up your machine correctly, swinging the coil in a consistent pattern, interpreting the signals you hear, and recovering targets without leaving a mess. Most beginners can start finding coins and small objects within their first outing, but learning to fine-tune your settings and read your detector’s feedback is what separates frustrating noise from genuine finds.
How Metal Detectors Work
Most detectors sold to hobbyists use a technology called VLF, or Very Low Frequency. A VLF detector has two coils: a transmitter coil sends an electric field into the ground, and a receiver coil picks up the signals that bounce back off metal objects. The key advantage is target discrimination. Because different metals have different conductivity, the detector can estimate whether what’s below you is a silver coin or a bottle cap.
Pulse Induction (PI) detectors work differently. They send powerful pulses into the ground through a single coil and measure how long the return signal lingers. This gives them superior depth, but they can’t easily tell one metal from another. PI detectors excel in mineralized soil, wet sand, and saltwater environments where VLF detectors struggle with false signals. For general-purpose detecting in parks, fields, and yards, a VLF detector is the better starting point.
Setting Up Before You Swing
Before you start searching, you need to adjust three things: ground balance, sensitivity, and discrimination. Getting these right makes the difference between a detector that chatters nonstop and one that gives you clean, reliable signals.
Ground balance compensates for minerals naturally present in soil, which can cause false signals. Many detectors handle this automatically with a built-in microprocessor that continuously reads the soil and adjusts. If your detector has manual ground balance, you’ll use a knob or button to dial it in while pumping the coil up and down over a patch of bare ground until the machine quiets down. Either way, you want to rebalance whenever you move to a noticeably different type of soil.
Sensitivity controls how deep and how faintly the detector will respond. Higher sensitivity means more depth, but also more chatter from soil minerals and electrical interference. Start at about 75% of maximum and lower it if the detector becomes unstable.
Discrimination lets you filter out categories of metal so the detector ignores them. Turning discrimination up rejects more types of junk (iron, foil, pull tabs), but it can also cause you to miss certain good targets that register in similar ranges. When you’re learning, keep discrimination low and dig everything. You’ll develop a feel for which signals are worth pursuing.
Proper Swing Technique
Hold the detector so the coil hovers 1 to 2 inches above the ground. Closer is better for depth and accuracy, but dragging the coil creates wear and noise. Keep the coil parallel to the surface throughout each sweep. A common beginner mistake is lifting the coil at the end of each swing like a pendulum, which creates dead spots on either side of your path.
Swing at a moderate, steady pace. Moving too fast causes the detector to miss smaller or deeper targets. Moving too slowly just wastes time without improving results. Walk forward in a straight line and aim for 10 to 20% overlap on each swing pass. That overlap ensures you don’t leave thin strips of unsearched ground between sweeps. Think of it like mowing a lawn: each pass should slightly cover the edge of the last one.
How Deep Can You Expect to Find Things
Consumer metal detectors typically detect objects buried between 10 and 16 inches deep. A useful rule of thumb ties depth to coil size. A 4-inch coil might pick up a quarter-sized coin at about 4 inches deep, while a 12-inch coil could find the same coin at 12 inches. Larger coils cover more ground and reach deeper, but they’re heavier and less precise at isolating individual targets in trashy areas. Most hobbyist detectors ship with a mid-range coil that balances depth and precision well for general use.
Soil conditions also matter. Dry, low-mineral soil lets signals travel deeper. Wet, iron-rich clay or heavily mineralized ground reduces effective depth and can generate false readings, which is exactly why ground balancing is so important.
Reading Signals and Identifying Targets
Your detector communicates through audio tones and, on most modern models, a visual display showing a target ID number. Low tones and low numbers generally indicate iron and ferrous junk. Mid-range tones often correspond to pull tabs, foil, and zinc pennies. High tones with high numbers suggest coins, jewelry, and silver.
Pay attention to signal consistency. A good target produces a repeatable signal when you sweep over it from multiple directions. If a signal sounds different every time you pass over it, or breaks up when you change your swing angle, it’s more likely trash or a piece of oddly shaped iron. Coins and rings tend to produce crisp, consistent tones because of their uniform shape.
Pinpointing and Recovering Your Target
Once you get a solid signal, narrow down the exact location before you dig. The most reliable method is the cross technique: sweep your coil across the target in one direction and note where the signal peaks. Then rotate 90 degrees and sweep again. The spot where those two peak lines intersect marks the target’s center.
Many detectors also have a built-in pinpoint mode that narrows the detection field so you can zero in more precisely. Press and hold the pinpoint button, then slowly move the coil over the area. The signal will grow louder and sharper as you center on the object.
A handheld pinpointer is one of the most useful accessories you can buy. After you’ve cut a plug of soil or dug a small hole, stick the pinpointer into the dirt. It beeps faster as it gets closer to the target, letting you locate objects buried in loose soil without widening the hole unnecessarily. This saves time and makes it much easier to leave a clean recovery site.
Digging and Filling
Use a digging tool or serrated trowel to cut a neat plug. Many experienced detectorists cut a C-shaped flap in the turf so the plug stays connected to the ground on one side. This makes it simple to fold the plug back into place after retrieving the target. Place loose dirt on a cloth or in a pouch rather than scattering it around, check both the hole and the plug with your detector or pinpointer to make sure you’ve found the source of the signal, then pack everything back in firmly. A well-filled hole should be nearly invisible within a few days as the grass recovers.
Choosing the Right Coil for Your Environment
Swapping coils is one of the easiest ways to adapt your detector to different situations. Smaller coils (around 5 to 6 inches) excel in trashy areas like old home sites or playgrounds because they can isolate targets that are close together. Larger coils (10 to 12 inches or more) are better for open fields where targets are sparse and depth matters more.
If you plan to detect on beaches, look for waterproof, corrosion-resistant coils designed for saltwater exposure. Fully submersible coils let you wade into shallow lakes, rivers, or surf zones. Keep in mind that a “waterproof coil” doesn’t always mean the control box is waterproof too. Check your detector’s specific ratings before submerging anything beyond the coil. Coil covers are inexpensive and worth using. They protect against scratches, rock impacts, and sand abrasion, and they’re far cheaper to replace than the coil itself.
Where You Can (and Can’t) Detect
Permission and legality vary widely by location. Private property requires the landowner’s explicit permission. Public parks may or may not allow detecting depending on local ordinances. National forests and federal lands have strict restrictions. Under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, it is illegal to excavate, remove, or damage any archaeological resource on public lands or Indian lands without a permit, and those permits are granted only for scientific research. The Code of Federal Regulations similarly prohibits disturbing any prehistoric, historic, or archaeological site, artifact, or structure on federal land.
State parks, county parks, and beaches each have their own rules. Always check before you detect. Many cities allow metal detecting in public parks as long as you fill your holes, but some require a permit or ban it outright.
Beyond legality, the practical ethics are straightforward: fill every hole completely, carry out any trash you dig, don’t detect on cultivated crops or manicured landscapes without permission, and leave the area looking better than you found it. Detectorists who leave open holes and scattered dirt are the reason sites get closed to everyone. Taking a few extra seconds to pack your holes tight protects both the hobby and the land.
