Using it correctly comes down to mastering a specific breathing technique, measuring at the right times, understanding what your results mean, and keeping the device’s sensor in good shape.
How the Device Works
Your body produces different amounts of CO2 depending on whether it’s burning fat or carbs. Carbohydrate metabolism generates more carbon dioxide per unit of energy than fat metabolism does. Lumen contains a CO2 sensor that analyzes the concentration of carbon dioxide in a single breath sample, then uses that data to estimate your fuel source on a scale from 1 to 5. A level 1 indicates you’re burning mostly fat, a level 5 means you’re running primarily on carbs, and the middle levels represent various blends of both.
This is a simplified, portable version of what happens during indirect calorimetry, the gold-standard metabolic test used in clinical settings. That test measures both oxygen consumption and CO2 production over several minutes through a face mask. Lumen condenses the concept into a single breath maneuver, which makes it far more convenient but also less precise than a full metabolic cart. The Breathing Technique

If you get an invalid reading, wait about 30 seconds and try again with a slower, steadier exhale.
When to Take Your Measurements
Your most important reading is the morning measurement. Take it right after waking up, before eating or drinking anything and before exercising. This fasted reading gives Lumen a baseline of your resting metabolic state, which the app uses to generate your nutrition recommendations for the day. If your morning level is low (1 or 2), your body woke up in a fat-burning state, and the app will typically suggest you can include more carbs. If it’s high (4 or 5), you’re still processing carbohydrates from the previous day, and the app will steer you toward lower-carb meals.
Beyond the morning reading, you can take additional measurements throughout the day. A pre-workout breath helps the app recommend whether you need a carb-based snack for fuel before intense exercise. When you first set up Lumen, the app walks you through a calibration period that typically lasts about two weeks. During this time, the device is learning your personal metabolic patterns. Don’t put too much stock in individual readings during this window. The device needs repeated measurements across different conditions to establish your personal baseline. After calibration, your daily recommendations and the “Lumen Flex Score,” which tracks your metabolic flexibility over time, become more meaningful. Metabolic flexibility refers to how efficiently your body switches between burning fat and carbs depending on what’s available. A more flexible metabolism is generally associated with better metabolic health.
Understanding Your Results
The 1-to-5 scale is straightforward once you know the pattern. Level 1 means your body is relying almost entirely on fat for fuel. Level 2 is mostly fat with some carb burning. Level 3 is a roughly even mix. Level 4 is mostly carbs, and level 5 means you’re burning almost exclusively carbohydrates.
Neither extreme is inherently good or bad. Waking up at a 1 or 2 after an overnight fast is a healthy sign that your body can tap into fat stores when carbs aren’t available. Hitting a 4 or 5 after a carb-heavy meal is completely normal. What matters more than any single reading is the overall pattern. The app translates these numbers into a daily nutrition plan with recommended ratios of carbs, protein, and fat. You don’t have to follow the plan precisely, but using it as a loose guide and tracking how your readings change in response to your meals is where most of the practical value comes from.
Tips for Reliable Readings
A few habits make a noticeable difference in consistency. Avoid measuring within two hours of eating, as digestion temporarily raises CO2 production and can skew results. Wait at least 30 minutes after any exercise before taking a reading. Don’t take a measurement immediately after drinking coffee or smoking, both of which affect breathing patterns and CO2 levels.
Sit upright and relaxed when you breathe into the device. Lying down or slouching changes your lung volume, which can affect the breath sample. If you’re congested or dealing with a respiratory issue, your readings may be unreliable until you’ve recovered. And try to measure at roughly the same time each morning so your readings are comparable day to day.
Cleaning and Device Care
Lumen’s internal sensor is sensitive to moisture and liquids. After each measurement, if the mouthpiece feels damp from your breath, wipe it with a dry cloth or paper towel before closing the cap. Once a week, clean the mouthpiece with an alcohol wipe (up to 70% concentration) to prevent buildup.
Never rinse the device with water or any other liquid. Moisture getting into the housing can damage the internal components and sensor permanently. Store it with the cap on in a dry location, and keep it away from extreme heat. Charge it regularly using the included cable.
