How to Use Omron Blood Pressure Monitor Correctly

Using an Omron blood pressure monitor correctly comes down to three things: preparing your body, positioning the cuff properly, and staying completely still during the reading. Small mistakes at any stage can skew your results by 10 to 50 mmHg, which is enough to make a normal reading look like hypertension or mask a reading that needs attention. Here’s how to get an accurate measurement every time.

Prepare Before You Measure

What you do in the 30 minutes before a reading matters more than most people realize. Don’t eat, drink, smoke, consume caffeine or alcohol, or exercise during that window. All of these temporarily raise blood pressure and will inflate your numbers.

Once you’re ready to sit down, find a chair with back support at a table or desk. Sit with your back against the chair and your feet flat on the floor for at least five minutes before pressing start. Crossing your legs or letting your feet dangle can raise your reading. This quiet rest period lets your cardiovascular system settle to its true baseline.

Empty your bladder before sitting down. A full bladder adds measurable pressure to your reading.

Choose the Right Cuff Size

Cuff size is one of the most overlooked sources of error. A cuff that’s too small can add 2 to 10 mmHg to your result. Omron offers four cuff sizes based on mid-arm circumference:

  • Small: 17 to 22 cm (about 7 to 9 inches)
  • Medium: 22 to 32 cm (about 9 to 13 inches)
  • Large: 32 to 42 cm (about 13 to 17 inches)
  • Extra-large: 42 to 57 cm (about 17 to 22 inches)

To find your size, wrap a soft measuring tape around the midpoint of your upper arm, halfway between your shoulder and elbow. Most Omron monitors ship with a medium or “ComFit” cuff that covers a wide range, but if your arm circumference falls outside that range, order the correct size separately. An ill-fitting cuff will consistently give you inaccurate numbers no matter how perfect your technique is.

Position the Cuff Correctly

Roll up or remove your sleeve. Don’t measure over clothing. Depending on fabric thickness, clothing between the cuff and your skin can add up to 50 mmHg to your reading.

Slide the cuff onto your bare upper arm with the air tube running down the inside of your arm toward your palm. Place the bottom edge of the cuff about half an inch above the bend of your elbow. Most Omron cuffs have an artery marker (a small line or arrow) that should align with the brachial artery, which runs along the inner side of your arm. Wrap the cuff snugly so you can slide one finger underneath but no more. If it’s too loose, the monitor may display an error or give a falsely high reading.

Rest your arm on a flat surface like a table so your upper arm is level with your heart. If your arm hangs at your side or rests in your lap, gravity affects blood flow and changes the reading. Your palm should face upward and your arm should be relaxed, not tensed.

Take the Reading

Press the start button. The cuff will inflate automatically, squeeze your arm, then slowly release. The entire process takes about 30 to 60 seconds. During this time, don’t move, talk, or look at your phone. Even active listening during a conversation can add 10 mmHg to your result. Sit quietly and breathe normally.

When the measurement is complete, the monitor displays two numbers. The top (larger) number is your systolic pressure, which is the force when your heart beats. The bottom (smaller) number is your diastolic pressure, the force between beats. Some models also display your pulse rate.

For the most reliable result, take two or three readings one to two minutes apart and average them. Blood pressure fluctuates from moment to moment, so a single reading is only a snapshot. Many Omron models will average your last three readings automatically.

What Your Numbers Mean

The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology updated their blood pressure categories in 2025. These are based on an average of two or more readings taken on two or more occasions, not a single measurement:

  • Normal: below 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120 to 129 systolic and below 80 diastolic
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130 to 139 systolic or 80 to 89 diastolic
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher systolic or 90 or higher diastolic

If your systolic and diastolic numbers fall into different categories, the higher category applies. A reading of 135/75, for example, counts as Stage 1 hypertension because of the systolic number, even though the diastolic is normal.

Syncing With the Omron Connect App

If your Omron monitor has Bluetooth (look for a Bluetooth icon on the device or packaging), you can send your readings to the Omron Connect app on your phone. This creates a running log you can share with your doctor and makes it easy to spot trends over weeks or months.

To pair for the first time, download the Omron Connect app and open it. Go to Settings, then select the option to set up a new device. Allow location services when prompted, as the app needs this to find your monitor via Bluetooth. Make sure batteries are installed in the monitor, then press and hold the Bluetooth button on the device until you see a “P” flashing on the screen. The app will search for and connect to your monitor. After the initial pairing, future readings transfer automatically when you press the Bluetooth button after a measurement.

Troubleshooting Common Errors

Omron monitors display error codes when something goes wrong during a reading. Here are the most common ones and what to do about them:

Loose cuff error. The cuff isn’t tight enough to get an accurate reading. Rewrap it more snugly around your bare arm and try again.

Movement error. You moved, talked, or shifted position during the measurement. Wait two to three minutes, sit still, and retake the reading. If this keeps happening, make sure clothing isn’t bunching under or around the cuff.

Irregular heartbeat symbol. The monitor detected an irregular heart rhythm during the reading. Remove the cuff, wait two to three minutes, and measure again. If the symbol appears repeatedly across multiple sessions, bring it up with your doctor.

Air plug disconnected. The tube connecting the cuff to the monitor isn’t fully seated. Push the plug in firmly until it clicks.

Low battery or exhausted battery indicator. Replace all batteries at once with fresh ones of the same type. Mixing old and new batteries can cause inconsistent readings.

Cuff over-inflation error (E2 on some models). This typically means the monitor couldn’t get a clean reading because of movement or insufficient inflation. If it keeps appearing, some models let you manually set the inflation level 30 to 40 mmHg above your expected systolic pressure.

Keep Your Monitor Accurate

Omron recommends having your monitor checked every two years. This isn’t a recalibration but rather an inspection for air leaks in the cuff, wear on the tubing, and a pressure sensor accuracy test. Contact Omron’s customer service or your local representative to arrange this. Between checks, inspect the cuff and tubing for visible cracks or stiffness, and replace the cuff if it no longer holds air firmly during inflation.

Store the monitor at room temperature and avoid wrapping the air tube tightly, which can kink it over time. If your readings suddenly seem consistently higher or lower than usual and your technique hasn’t changed, that’s a sign the device may need inspection sooner than the two-year mark.

Tips for Consistent Tracking

Measure at the same time each day, ideally in the morning before medication and in the evening before bed. Blood pressure naturally rises and falls throughout the day, so comparing a morning reading to an afternoon one isn’t meaningful. Use the same arm each time. Your left and right arms can give slightly different numbers, and switching between them adds noise to your tracking.

Keep a log if your monitor doesn’t sync to an app. Write down the date, time, systolic, diastolic, and pulse for each reading. Patterns over weeks tell you far more than any single number. A few high readings during a stressful week are different from consistently elevated readings over a month.
