The Spectra S1 is a closed-system double electric breast pump with a built-in rechargeable battery, and getting the most out of it comes down to proper assembly, correct flange fit, and knowing how to work the two pumping modes. Here’s everything you need to go from unboxing to a full pumping session.
Assembling the Pump Kit
Before your first use, lay out all the parts so you can see what you’re working with: the motor unit, tubing, backflow protectors (two-piece units with a white silicone membrane), breast flanges, duckbill valves, and collection bottles.
Start with the backflow protector. Insert the white silicone membrane into the lower case, then press the upper case into the assembled membrane. This is the part that keeps milk from entering the tubing or motor, and it only works if the membrane sits flat without any folds or wrinkles.
Next, push the duckbill valve onto the bottom of the breast flange. Insert the assembled backflow protector into the top of the flange. Screw the collection bottle onto the bottom of the flange assembly. Finally, connect one end of the tubing to the backflow protector and the other end to the motor unit. Repeat for the second side if you’re double pumping. Give each connection a gentle tug to make sure nothing is loose.
Getting the Right Flange Size
Flange fit matters more than any setting on the pump. A wrong size causes pain, skin discoloration, and lower milk output. To find your size, measure the diameter of your nipple (not the areola) before pumping or nursing, then add 3 to 5 millimeters. That total is your target flange size. The Spectra S1 typically ships with 24mm and 28mm flanges, but sizes ranging from 15mm to 32mm are available separately.
When the flange is on and the pump is running, your nipple should sit centered in the tunnel with a few millimeters of space on each side, moving freely without rubbing the walls. If your areola gets pulled more than a few millimeters into the tunnel, the flange is too large. If your nipple rubs against the sides or you see a ring of discoloration afterward, it’s too small. Both problems reduce output and cause discomfort, so it’s worth troubleshooting before you assume a supply issue.
Understanding the Controls
The Spectra S1 has a simple control panel with five sets of buttons:
- Power button: Turns the pump on and off. The screen lights up immediately.
- Massage/Expression button: Toggles between the two pumping modes (more on these below).
- Vacuum level (+/−): Adjusts how strongly the pump pulls, measured in levels 1 through 12. Level 12 reaches 270 mmHg, which is hospital-grade suction strength.
- Cycle speed (+/−): Adjusts how many times per minute the pump “sucks” and releases.
- Night light button: Toggles a small LED light with two brightness levels, useful for middle-of-the-night sessions without turning on a lamp.
Massage Mode vs. Expression Mode
The pump has two distinct modes that mimic how a baby nurses. Understanding when to switch between them is the single most important thing for getting a good output.
Massage mode (also called letdown mode) simulates the quick, fluttery sucking a baby does at the beginning of a feeding to trigger your milk to let down. The cycle speed is fixed at 70 cycles per minute, which is fast and light. You can adjust the vacuum level, and most people find level 4 or 5 comfortable during this phase. Stay in massage mode for about a minute and a half to two minutes, until you see milk beginning to spray or flow steadily.
Expression mode is the deeper, slower pull that actually removes milk. When you press the massage/expression button to switch over, the cycle speed drops to an adjustable range of 38 to 56 cycles per minute. A good starting point is 46 cycles per minute. For vacuum, levels 7 to 9 work well for most people. You can go higher if it’s comfortable, but more suction doesn’t always mean more milk. Pain or discomfort will actually work against you by inhibiting letdown.
A Full Pumping Session, Step by Step
Once everything is assembled and the flanges are on, press the power button. The pump starts in massage mode automatically. Set your vacuum to a comfortable level (try 4 or 5 to start) and wait for your milk to let down. You’ll see drops turn into a steady flow or spray.
Once milk is flowing, press the massage/expression button to switch into expression mode. Adjust the cycle speed to around 46 and bring the vacuum up to 7 or 8, or wherever you’re comfortable. Pump in this mode until the milk flow slows noticeably.
Here’s where many people stop, but there’s a technique that yields significantly more milk: when the flow slows down, switch back to massage mode. This triggers a second letdown. Once milk starts flowing again, switch back to expression mode. You can repeat this cycle as many times as you get a response. A typical session lasts 15 to 20 minutes total.
Using the Battery
The S1’s built-in rechargeable battery is what separates it from the cord-only S2. A full charge provides roughly 3 to 4 hours of continuous pumping, which translates to about 8 to 12 sessions depending on how long each one runs. Charging takes 1 to 2 hours. You can pump while plugged in, so there’s no need to wait for a full charge if you’re near an outlet. The battery indicator on the display shows remaining charge. Try to avoid letting it drain completely on a regular basis, as this shortens the battery’s overall lifespan.
Cleaning After Each Use
After every session, disassemble all parts that touched milk: the flanges, duckbill valves, backflow protectors (including the membrane), and bottles. Rinse them in cool water first to remove milk residue, then wash with warm soapy water or place them in a dishwasher-safe mesh bag and run a hot cycle. If your dishwasher has a sanitize setting, that counts as both cleaning and sanitizing in one step.
The tubing and motor unit should never be submerged or washed. Because the S1 is a closed system, milk shouldn’t enter the tubing. If you notice moisture inside a tube, run the pump with just the tubing attached for a few minutes to air it out.
For brand-new parts or periodic deep sanitizing, disassemble everything and boil the milk-contact parts in water for 5 minutes, then remove them with clean tongs and let them air dry on a clean surface.
When to Replace Parts
Worn parts are one of the most common and least obvious reasons for a drop in suction or output. Duckbill valves take the most wear. Replace them every month, or sooner if you pump more than three times a day. Check the backflow protector membranes every few weeks for cracks, cloudiness, or warping, and replace them every 2 to 3 months. Tubing lasts 6 to 12 months with normal use. Replace it if you see moisture inside that won’t clear, or if the ends have stretched and no longer seal tightly to the motor or backflow protector.
If you notice a gradual decline in suction and your settings haven’t changed, swap in fresh duckbill valves first. That alone fixes the problem in most cases.
