Wild lettuce (Lactuca virosa) is typically used as a dried leaf tea, a tincture, or a smoked herb to promote relaxation and mild pain relief. The milky latex the plant produces, sometimes called lactucarium or “lettuce opium,” contains the active compounds responsible for its effects. How you prepare it matters, since the method you choose affects both potency and convenience.
Why Wild Lettuce Works
The plant’s effects come from bitter compounds called sesquiterpene lactones, primarily lactucin and lactucopicrin. These compounds are concentrated in the white, milky sap that bleeds from the stem when you cut or break it. In animal studies, lactucin and lactucopicrin produced pain-relieving effects comparable to ibuprofen and showed clear sedative properties by reducing spontaneous movement. The mechanism appears to involve the same receptor system that sleep medications target: both lactucin and lactucopicrin bind to GABA receptors in the brain, which is the main pathway the nervous system uses to calm itself down. Lactucin binds with roughly 81% affinity to this receptor, and lactucopicrin at about 56%.
Of the active compounds, lactucopicrin appears to be the most potent for pain relief specifically. This is worth knowing because different parts of the plant and different preparation methods may extract these compounds in different ratios.
Tea (Dried Leaf Infusion)
Tea is the simplest and most common way to use wild lettuce. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried wild lettuce leaf per cup of hot water. Pour boiling or near-boiling water over the herb, cover the cup to trap volatile compounds, and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. The longer you steep, the more bitter and potent the tea becomes. The standard approach from botanical medicine practitioners uses a 1:2 ratio of plant material to solvent, meaning 1 ounce of fresh wild lettuce to 2 ounces of liquid, with 95% ethanol (grain alcohol) as the solvent.
A more thorough method involves two rounds of extraction. On day one, blend fresh wild lettuce with the alcohol, let it sit for at least 48 hours, then press out the liquid. On day two, take a new batch of fresh plant material and blend it with a mixture of half fresh 95% alcohol and half of the liquid you pressed out from day one. Let this second batch sit for at least 48 hours as well, then press it out. Combine both pressed liquids and let the final tincture macerate for a minimum of two weeks. Six weeks produces a stronger result. This double-extraction method pulls more of the active compounds out of the plant than a single soak.
Tinctures are taken by the dropperful, typically 1 to 2 milliliters at a time, placed under the tongue or mixed into a small amount of water.
Smoking or Vaporizing
Some people smoke dried wild lettuce leaf on its own or blended with other herbs like mullein or damiana. This delivers effects more quickly than tea or tincture, usually within minutes, but the effects also wear off faster. If you go this route, use properly dried leaves and avoid any material that’s moldy or discolored. Vaporizing at a lower temperature is easier on the lungs than combustion.
Harvesting the Latex Directly
The most traditional (and labor-intensive) preparation involves collecting the milky sap directly. Score the stem of a mature, flowering wild lettuce plant with a knife and let the white latex bead up on the surface. Scrape it off and collect it on a plate or glass surface. Repeat across multiple stems and multiple days. The latex darkens and hardens as it dries into a brownish resin. This dried resin, lactucarium, can be dissolved in warm water or alcohol, or rolled into small pills. It is significantly more potent than dried leaf preparations because the active compounds are concentrated rather than diluted among all the plant’s fiber and water.
Collecting meaningful amounts of latex requires patience. Each stem cut yields only a small drop, so most casual users find tea or tincture far more practical.
Identifying the Right Plant
Correct identification is essential. Lactuca virosa grows 2 to 6 feet tall with a stiff, upright stem and oblong leaves that clasp the stem at their base. The leaves often have prickly margins and a row of stiff bristles along the midrib on the underside. When you snap the stem or scratch a leaf vein, milky white sap should appear immediately. The plant produces small yellow flower heads that resemble tiny dandelion blooms.
The most common lookalike is prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), a close relative that also produces latex and has some overlapping traditional uses. Prickly lettuce has noticeably stiffer bristles on its lower midvein compared to other Lactuca species. Both plants contain similar active compounds, and some herbalists use them interchangeably, though Lactuca virosa is generally considered more potent. The key species to avoid confusing with wild lettuce are plants in entirely different families that happen to have milky sap, like certain spurges, which are toxic. If you’re not confident in your identification, buy dried wild lettuce from an established herb supplier rather than foraging.
Dosage Considerations
There are no well-established clinical dosages for wild lettuce. One study used 1,000 mg of lettuce seed for insomnia over a two-week period and reported success, but formal dose-ranging studies for the leaf or latex haven’t been conducted. In practice, most herbalists suggest starting with a low amount and increasing gradually. For dried leaf tea, that means one teaspoon per cup before moving to two. For tincture, start with half a dropperful. For dried latex resin, a pea-sized amount dissolved in warm water is a reasonable starting point.
The effects of wild lettuce are mild compared to pharmaceutical sedatives or painkillers. In the animal research comparing its compounds to ibuprofen, the active doses were in a range that required concentrated, isolated compounds rather than crude plant material. You should expect gentle relaxation and mild pain relief, not anything dramatically sedating. People who expect opiate-level effects from the “lettuce opium” nickname will be disappointed. The name is historical, not pharmacological.
Side Effects and Cautions
Wild lettuce is generally well tolerated in moderate amounts, but it can cause drowsiness, which is the whole point for most users but worth noting if you plan to drive or operate anything requiring alertness. Some people experience mild digestive upset, especially with stronger preparations or on an empty stomach. Allergic reactions are possible, particularly in people sensitive to plants in the daisy family (Asteraceae), which includes ragweed, chamomile, and chrysanthemums.
Because the active compounds work on GABA receptors, wild lettuce could theoretically amplify the effects of other sedating substances, including alcohol, sleep medications, and anti-anxiety drugs. If you’re using any of these, factor that in. Large doses of concentrated latex have historically been associated with dizziness, nausea, and anxiety, so more is not better with this plant.
