Your internal clock, housed in a small region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, orchestrates a daily rhythm of hormones and body temperature shifts that determine when you naturally fall asleep and wake up. Each morning, your body releases a burst of cortisol right as you regain consciousness. This cortisol awakening response is what transitions you from sleep to full alertness, and it’s timed to your habitual wake window. If you’ve been waking at 8 a.m. for years, that hormonal surge is calibrated to 8 a.m. Asking your body to be alert at 6 a.m. means you’re waking during a period when your brain is still in deep recovery mode.

People also differ in their natural chronotype. About 35% of the population naturally gravitates toward earlier sleep and wake times, while roughly 50% skew later. The remaining group falls in between. If you’re naturally a later sleeper, becoming an early riser is absolutely possible, but it requires more deliberate effort than it does for someone who’s already wired that way. The goal is to gradually retrain your clock, not to fight it every single morning through sheer willpower.

Every time you snooze and drift back off, you enter light, fragmented sleep that provides no real benefit. You’re essentially trading your most valuable sleep for the worst possible version of it.
