The standard way to wrap a broken pinky finger is called buddy taping, where you tape the injured pinky to the ring finger for support. All you need is half-inch adhesive tape and a small piece of cotton or gauze padding. That said, any pinky fracture should be evaluated by a medical professional first, because some breaks need more than taping to heal correctly.

Before You Tape: Signs You Need Emergency Care

Not every broken pinky can be safely managed with buddy taping at home. Some fractures involve displaced bone, nerve damage, or open wounds that require immediate treatment. Head straight to an emergency department if your pinky is pointing at an odd angle, looks blue or feels numb, or if you can see bone through a cut in the skin. These signs suggest the fracture is unstable or that blood flow to the finger is compromised.

Children’s fractures tend to fall in that same three-to-four-week range for simple breaks, but kids need closer medical supervision. Their bones are still growing through specialized growth plates, and fractures near these plates can disrupt normal bone development if not managed carefully. Exercises After the Tape Comes Off

Once the fracture has healed and your provider clears you, stiffness is the main challenge. Weeks of immobilization leave the finger joints tight, and the pinky is particularly prone to losing range of motion because it’s the smallest and least-used finger.
