The official minimum recommendation is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, which means 100 grams only becomes the bare minimum if you weigh around 275 pounds. For a 150-pound person, 100 grams works out to about 1.5 grams per kilogram, a level that’s above the minimum but well below the upper limits most experts consider safe.

What the Official Guidelines Actually Say

The Recommended Dietary Allowance for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, or about 0.36 grams per pound. For a 150-pound person, that’s only 54 grams per day. For someone at 180 pounds, it’s 65 grams. These numbers represent the minimum to prevent deficiency, not the amount for optimal health or body composition. Many researchers and clinicians argue the RDA is set too low, particularly for people who exercise or are over 65.

Harvard Health suggests that healthy adults keep total protein intake to no more than about 2 grams per kilogram of ideal body weight.
