A dose of 1,200 mg of valerian root is higher than what most clinical trials have tested, and it’s likely more than you need. The majority of sleep studies have used between 300 and 900 mg of valerian extract per night, with 450 to 600 mg being the most common range. That doesn’t automatically make 1,200 mg dangerous, but it does put you well above the doses researchers have evaluated for both effectiveness and safety.
What Clinical Trials Actually Used
There’s no officially established dose for valerian root because it’s sold as a supplement, not a drug. But looking at clinical research gives a useful picture of where the tested range falls. Most insomnia studies have used standardized valerian extract at doses between 400 and 900 mg taken 30 minutes to two hours before bed. A common dose across multiple trials was 600 mg of a standardized dried root extract. One NIH-supported trial used 300 mg (three 100 mg softgels) nightly for two weeks.
At 900 mg, researchers noted that participants experienced increased sleepiness the following morning, a sign that the sedative effect was carrying over longer than intended. At 1,200 mg, you’re a third higher than the dose that already caused next-day drowsiness, with no clinical data showing that the extra amount improves sleep quality.
More Doesn’t Mean Better
If you’re taking 1,200 mg because a lower dose didn’t seem to work, that’s worth paying attention to. The overall evidence for valerian as a sleep aid is actually inconclusive. The NIH notes that clinical studies have not reliably demonstrated that valerian improves sleep in a meaningful way, partly because many trials included people who didn’t have insomnia to begin with. So the issue may not be that your dose is too low. It may be that valerian simply isn’t effective enough for your situation, and doubling up won’t change that.
Valerian works by interacting with GABA, the same calming brain chemical targeted by prescription sedatives and alcohol. At higher doses, that sedative effect becomes harder to control: you may feel groggy, foggy, or sluggish the next morning rather than genuinely better rested.
Extract vs. Root Powder
One important variable is whether your 1,200 mg is a concentrated extract or ground root powder. These are not equivalent. A standardized extract concentrates the active compounds, so 600 mg of extract delivers far more of valerian’s sedative components than 600 mg of plain dried root. Many supplement labels list “valerian root” without specifying which form you’re getting. If your product is raw root powder in capsules, 1,200 mg is closer to a moderate dose. If it’s a concentrated extract, 1,200 mg is genuinely high.
Check the supplement facts panel for terms like “4:1 extract” or “standardized to X% valerenic acid.” A 4:1 extract means each milligram represents four milligrams of raw root, so 1,200 mg of that extract would be roughly equivalent to 4,800 mg of dried root, a very large amount.
Safety Concerns at Higher Doses
Valerian is generally considered safe at typical doses, but the safety picture gets less clear as the amount goes up. Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration has received 15 reports of liver injury in people taking valerian-containing products since 1983. In 10 of those cases, other ingredients were likely responsible. In five cases, valerian itself was the probable or possible cause. Three of those involved markers for severe liver injury, and two people required hospitalization. The agency concluded that liver injury from valerian is very rare, but it does happen.
Most cases resolved once the person stopped taking valerian. There’s no established threshold where liver risk begins, which is part of the problem with higher doses: you’re in uncharted territory. If you’ve been taking 1,200 mg regularly for weeks or months, be alert for signs of liver stress like unusual fatigue, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Interactions That Raise the Risk
The bigger concern with a high dose of valerian isn’t necessarily the valerian itself but what else is in your system. Valerian can prolong the effects of sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, sleep aids like melatonin or kava, and alcohol. If you combine 1,200 mg of valerian with even a moderate amount of alcohol or a sleep supplement, the combined sedative effect can impair your alertness, coordination, and driving ability the next day.
If you’re scheduled for surgery, stop taking valerian at least two weeks beforehand. At high doses, it can interact with anesthetics and amplify sedation during the procedure.
A More Practical Approach
If you’re currently taking 1,200 mg and not noticing much benefit, the answer probably isn’t to keep increasing. Try stepping down to 450 to 600 mg of a standardized extract, taken about 30 minutes before bed. Give it at least two weeks at a consistent dose, since some evidence suggests valerian’s effects may build over time rather than working strongly on the first night.
If that still doesn’t help, valerian may simply not be the right tool for your sleep issues. The clinical evidence for it is mixed at best, and there are other approaches, both behavioral and supplement-based, that have stronger research behind them. Spending more money on higher doses of a supplement with inconclusive evidence is unlikely to be the path to better sleep.
