The standard medical threshold for fever is 38°C (100.4°F), which is the cutoff used by both the CDC and most clinical guidelines. At 37.7°C, you’re sitting just below that line, in a range often called “subfebrile” or “low-grade elevated temperature.”
That said, 37.7°C is above the traditional “normal” of 37°C, and it can mean your body is responding to something. Whether it matters depends on where you measured, when you measured, and what else is going on.
What Counts as a Fever
The widely accepted fever threshold for adults is 38°C (100.4°F), whether measured orally, rectally, or with an ear or forehead thermometer. The CDC uses this same cutoff for screening travelers and identifying illness. Below 38°C but above your personal baseline is sometimes called a low-grade or subfebrile temperature. It’s a gray zone: not normal, but not a clear fever either.

Why Your Temperature Might Be 37.7°C Without Illness
Body temperature isn’t a fixed number. It fluctuates throughout the day, typically hitting its lowest point in the early morning and peaking in the late afternoon or evening. That natural swing can be as much as 0.5°C, which means a healthy person could register 37.7°C on a late afternoon reading without anything being wrong.
Several other factors can push your temperature into this range without infection. Physical exercise raises body temperature temporarily. Stress, disrupted sleep, alcohol, and travel across time zones all have measurable effects. In women, body temperature rises by roughly 0.3°C after ovulation and stays elevated through the second half of the menstrual cycle. A 37.7°C reading during that phase may simply reflect normal hormonal shifts.
When 37.7°C Matters
A single reading of 37.7°C on its own, with no symptoms, is rarely a concern. It becomes more meaningful in context. If you normally run at 36.5°C and suddenly measure 37.7°C, that’s a bigger jump than it would be for someone whose baseline sits at 37.2°C. Tracking your temperature over several hours or days gives you more useful information than any single number.
Pay attention if 37.7°C is accompanied by other symptoms like body aches, chills, fatigue, sore throat, or cough. A temperature that starts at 37.7°C and climbs over several hours is likely heading toward a true fever. A pattern where a mild temperature improves and then returns or worsens can also signal something that needs attention.
Certain symptoms alongside any elevated temperature warrant prompt medical evaluation: difficulty breathing, chest or abdominal pain or pressure, confusion or persistent dizziness, seizures, severe muscle pain, or significant weakness. These are signs of complications that go beyond what the thermometer is telling you.
How to Get an Accurate Reading
If you’re checking because you feel unwell, a few practical steps improve accuracy. Wait at least 15 minutes after eating, drinking, or exercising before taking an oral reading, since all three can temporarily skew the number. Make sure the thermometer probe sits under your tongue toward the back of your mouth, and keep your lips closed for the full measurement time.
For tracking purposes, take your temperature at the same time each day using the same method. Comparing a morning oral reading to an evening armpit reading tells you very little. Consistency in timing and technique is what makes repeated measurements useful.
