Is 5 Hours of Sleep Enough for a Teenager?

Five hours of sleep is not enough for a teenager. It falls well short of the 8 to 10 hours recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for 13- to 18-year-olds. Sleeping only five hours doesn’t just leave a teen feeling groggy. It measurably impairs thinking, raises the risk of mood disorders, disrupts brain development, and increases the chance of car accidents.

What Happens to a Teen’s Brain on 5 Hours of Sleep

A study published in the journal SLEEP found that restricting adolescents to five hours of time in bed for seven consecutive nights caused cumulative deterioration in sustained attention, working memory, processing speed, and the kind of higher-order thinking needed for planning and decision-making. The damage built up night after night, getting progressively worse rather than leveling off.

Perhaps more concerning, the impairment didn’t fully reverse after catching up on sleep. Even after two nights of nine-hour recovery sleep, residual deficits in sustained attention and daytime sleepiness persisted. That means a teen who sleeps five hours during the school week and tries to “make up for it” on the weekend likely carries some cognitive cost into the following Monday.

Why Teens Are Wired to Stay Up Late

Part of the reason so many teenagers end up short on sleep is biological, not just behavioral. During puberty, the body’s internal clock shifts later. The brain starts releasing melatonin (the hormone that signals sleepiness) at a later time than it did in childhood, even without the influence of screens, social media, or homework. This means a teenager may genuinely not feel tired until 11 p.m. or later.

When school start times force a 6 a.m. alarm, that late-shifting biology collides with an early morning schedule. The result: a huge number of teens regularly get far less sleep than they need. CDC data from 2021 shows that 77% of high school students don’t get eight hours of sleep on school nights. The numbers are even worse for 12th graders (84%) and Black students (84%).

Mental Health and Suicide Risk

Sleep helps regulate emotions, and losing it destabilizes mood in ways that go beyond irritability. Sleep deprivation is considered an underlying factor in anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. For teenagers, who are already navigating intense emotional and social pressures, this link carries serious weight.

Research has shown that sleep problems in adolescents are a major risk factor for suicidal thoughts and death by suicide, which is the third-leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-olds. This connection holds even after accounting for depression, drug use, and alcohol use. In South Korea, where adolescents average just 4.9 hours of sleep per night, youth suicide rates are notably high, and researchers have pointed to chronic sleep deprivation as a likely contributor.

Sleep Builds the Teenage Brain

A teenager’s brain is still under construction. The insulation around nerve fibers, called myelin, continues developing in the frontal brain regions throughout adolescence and into early adulthood. This insulation is what allows different brain areas to communicate quickly and efficiently. Research in both animal and human studies indicates that sufficient sleep is required for this insulation process to occur normally.

One of the last brain pathways to fully develop connects the emotional center of the brain with the area responsible for rational decision-making and impulse control. This connection is what allows a person to pause, assess a situation, and override a knee-jerk emotional reaction. Disrupting deep sleep during adolescence has been shown in animal studies to significantly impair the development of brain connectivity. Researchers have proposed that chronic sleep deprivation may slow brain development and increase vulnerability to mental health disorders later on.

Driving Risk Increases Sharply

For teens who drive, short sleep is a concrete safety hazard. AAA Foundation data shows that drivers who slept five to six hours in the previous 24 hours had 1.9 times the crash rate compared to those who slept seven or more hours. Drop to four to five hours, which is close to what many sleep-deprived teens get, and the crash rate jumps to 4.3 times higher. Below four hours, it’s 11.5 times higher. A tired teenager behind the wheel faces risk levels that rival those of drunk driving.

Weight Gain and Metabolic Changes

Sleep deprivation also reshapes appetite and metabolism. When teens don’t sleep enough, their bodies produce less of the hormone that signals fullness and more of the hormone that triggers hunger. The net effect is increased appetite, particularly for calorie-dense foods. Short sleep is also associated with decreased insulin sensitivity, meaning the body becomes less efficient at processing blood sugar. Over time, these changes raise the risk of weight gain and obesity during a period of life when metabolic habits are being established.

How to Close the Gap

If you’re a teenager (or the parent of one) trying to move from five hours toward eight, small shifts tend to work better than dramatic overhauls. Moving bedtime earlier by 15 to 20 minutes every few days gives the body’s clock time to adjust. Keeping wake times consistent on weekends, within an hour of the weekday alarm, prevents the internal clock from drifting even later.

Light exposure matters more than most people realize. Bright light in the morning helps advance the body’s clock, making it easier to fall asleep earlier that night. Conversely, bright screens close to bedtime push the clock later, reinforcing the exact problem puberty already creates. Dimming lights and putting phones away 30 to 60 minutes before bed gives melatonin a chance to rise on schedule.

Caffeine is another common culprit. It has a half-life of about five to six hours, so a coffee or energy drink at 4 p.m. still has half its stimulant effect at 10 p.m. Cutting off caffeine by early afternoon can make a noticeable difference in how quickly sleep comes at night.

Five hours of sleep might feel survivable, especially when it becomes a teen’s normal. But “getting by” and “functioning well” are not the same thing. The cognitive testing data makes clear that teens sleeping five hours often don’t recognize how impaired they’ve become, because chronic sleep loss recalibrates their sense of what normal alertness feels like. The costs, from grades to mood to physical safety, are real and measurable, even when they don’t feel obvious.
