A room temperature of 75°F is slightly above the recommended range for a baby’s sleep environment. Most pediatric guidelines suggest keeping the nursery between 68°F and 72°F. That said, 75°F isn’t dangerously hot. It’s a gray zone where your baby can sleep safely with the right clothing adjustments and good airflow, but it’s worth trying to bring the temperature down if you can.
Why 68°F to 72°F Is the Target
The 68°F to 72°F range exists because babies gain and lose heat differently than adults. A newborn has roughly 6.5 times the density of sweat glands per square centimeter of skin compared to an adult, but each gland produces only about half the output of an adult’s. Babies also have a much larger skin surface area relative to their body weight. A newborn averages about 648 square centimeters of skin per kilogram, which drops by 28% by age one.
In practical terms, this means babies absorb environmental heat quickly and can’t cool themselves as efficiently as you can. When the air temperature stays below skin temperature (which hovers around 91°F to 95°F), that large surface area actually helps babies radiate heat away. But in warmer conditions, the balance tips. The room pushes heat into the baby faster than the baby can shed it, and their limited sweating capacity makes it hard to compensate.
The Link Between Overheating and SIDS
The concern with a warm nursery isn’t just comfort. Overheating is one of the recognized risk factors for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. A study published through the National Institutes of Health found that a 10°F increase in daily temperature during summer months was associated with an 8.6% increase in SIDS risk. That risk was even higher for Black infants (18.5%) and for babies between 3 and 11 months old (16.9%).
Thermal stress during sleep can interfere with a baby’s ability to wake up when something is wrong. It affects breathing drive, heart rate responses, and how well oxygen reaches the brain. Many of the well-known SIDS risk factors, including stomach sleeping, overwrapping, bed sharing, and bedroom heating, share a common thread: they all increase the baby’s thermal load. The CDC’s safe sleep guidance specifically warns against letting a baby get too hot, noting that sweating or a hot chest are signs to watch for.
How to Tell if Your Baby Is Too Warm
Hands and feet aren’t reliable indicators. They’re normally cooler than the rest of the body. Instead, place your hand on your baby’s chest or the back of their neck. If the skin there feels hot or clammy, your baby is too warm.
Other signs of overheating include:
- Flushed or red skin, especially on the face
- Damp hair or visible sweating (though babies can overheat without sweating)
- Unusual fussiness or restlessness
- Sluggishness or seeming overly tired
- Rapid breathing or a noticeably fast heart rate
Heat rash is another clue. It shows up as tiny red bumps in skin folds, around the neck, and on the bottom. It’s not dangerous on its own, but it signals that your baby has been too warm.
What to Dress Your Baby in at 75°F
Sleep sacks use a rating system called TOG (Thermal Overall Grade) that measures warmth. At 75°F, you want a 0.2 TOG sleep sack, which is the lightest option available. Between 68°F and 75°F, a 1.0 TOG sack is appropriate. If your room sits right at 75°F, a 0.2 TOG sack with a short-sleeve onesie underneath is a reasonable starting point.
Skip blankets entirely for babies under one year. They’re both a suffocation hazard and make it harder to control temperature precisely. A sleep sack gives you a predictable, consistent layer you can swap out based on the room temperature. If you’re hovering between TOG ratings, go lighter and check your baby’s chest after 20 to 30 minutes to see how they’re doing.
Bringing a 75°F Room Down
A fan in the nursery does more than cool the air. A study in Archives of Pediatrics found that fan use during sleep was associated with a 72% reduction in SIDS risk. The benefit was strongest in warmer rooms: when temperatures were higher, fan use was linked to a 94% reduction in risk compared to a more modest effect in cooler rooms. Researchers believe improved air circulation helps prevent pockets of rebreathed air and reduces thermal stress.
Point the fan so it circulates air around the room rather than blowing directly on the baby. A ceiling fan works well for this. You can also try these approaches:
- Keep the crib away from windows that get direct sunlight and away from radiators or heating vents
- Open a window if outdoor temperatures are lower than indoor temperatures (as long as the room stays above 65°F)
- Close blinds or curtains during the afternoon to prevent solar heat gain
- Run air conditioning if available, setting it to 70°F to 72°F
Humidity Matters Too
A room at 75°F with 60% humidity feels meaningfully warmer than the same room at 40% humidity, because moist air makes it harder for sweat to evaporate. Boston Children’s Hospital recommends keeping indoor humidity between 35% and 50%. A simple hygrometer (often built into nursery thermometers) lets you monitor both temperature and humidity at a glance. If humidity is high, a small dehumidifier or air conditioning can bring it into range.
Nighttime Temperature Swings
Many homes that hit 75°F during the day cool off significantly after dark, especially in spring and fall. This is actually helpful, since it naturally brings the room closer to the ideal range during the hours your baby sleeps longest. The challenge is making sure the room doesn’t swing too far in the other direction.
A room thermometer in the nursery takes the guesswork out. Some parents use smart thermometers that send alerts if the temperature drifts outside a set range. If your room drops below 65°F overnight, add a layer rather than cranking the heat. The Lullaby Trust advises against keeping heating on all night, and if you do, setting it no higher than 68°F. Layering up is easier to adjust than waiting for a room to cool back down after overshooting with a heater.
The bottom line: 75°F is above the ideal range but manageable. Use a lightweight sleep sack, run a fan, and check your baby’s chest periodically. If you can get the room a few degrees cooler, that’s even better.
