Is 9 mg of Melatonin Too Much to Take?

For most adults, 9 mg of melatonin is a high dose but not a dangerous one. Standard recommendations start at 2 mg for sleep problems, and many sleep specialists suggest that lower doses (0.5 to 3 mg) work just as well as higher ones without the next-day grogginess. While 9 mg won’t cause a medical emergency, it’s well above what most people need and increases the likelihood of unwanted side effects.

What Doses Are Actually Recommended

The NHS recommends 2 mg slow-release tablets as the standard starting dose for both short-term and long-term insomnia in adults. For persistent sleep problems, the dose can be gradually increased up to a maximum of 10 mg per day, but only if lower doses aren’t working and side effects remain manageable. For jet lag, the typical dose is 3 mg, with a maximum of 6 mg.

So 9 mg falls just under the maximum prescribed dose for chronic insomnia, a dose that’s reached only after a gradual increase under medical guidance. If you jumped straight to 9 mg without trying lower amounts first, you’re likely taking far more than you need. Your body produces roughly 0.1 to 0.3 mg of melatonin naturally each evening. Even a 1 mg supplement raises blood levels well above what your brain produces on its own.

Side Effects at Higher Doses

The most common complaint with high-dose melatonin is daytime drowsiness, essentially a “melatonin hangover.” At 9 mg, you’re more likely to wake up feeling groggy, foggy, or sluggish the next morning. Other common side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, vivid or strange dreams, and night sweats. Less common but possible effects at higher doses include confusion, disorientation, and reduced alertness during the day.

Melatonin has a half-life of 20 to 40 minutes, meaning your body breaks it down relatively quickly. A 10 mg dose typically clears the bloodstream within about five hours. But the sedating effects can linger longer than the supplement itself, especially if you’re sensitive to it or took it too late at night.

Why More Isn’t Better

Melatonin works as a timing signal, not a sedative. It tells your brain that it’s nighttime and helps shift your internal clock toward sleep. You don’t need to flood your system with it for that signal to work. Research consistently shows that doses between 0.5 and 3 mg are effective for most people, and higher doses don’t proportionally improve sleep quality. In fact, taking too much can cause restlessness or fragmented sleep in some people, the opposite of what you’re going for.

If 9 mg isn’t helping you fall asleep or stay asleep, adding more melatonin is unlikely to solve the problem. The issue may not be a melatonin deficiency at all. Insomnia is more often driven by stress, irregular schedules, light exposure, or other factors that melatonin alone can’t fix.

What’s Actually in Your Supplement

One underappreciated problem with melatonin supplements is label accuracy. A study highlighted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that the actual melatonin content in supplements varied dramatically from what the label stated. Lot-to-lot variability within a single product differed by as much as 465%. That means a bottle labeled 9 mg could contain significantly more or less than that amount, making it harder to gauge your real intake or manage side effects consistently.

This variability is partly why starting with the lowest effective dose matters. If your supplement already contains more melatonin than advertised, a 9 mg label could mean you’re taking 12 mg or more without knowing it.

Interactions and Who Should Be Cautious

At any dose, melatonin interacts with several types of medication. It can worsen blood pressure in people taking blood pressure drugs and may reduce the effectiveness of anti-seizure medications. If you take blood thinners, melatonin can amplify their effect. Combined with other sedating substances (including alcohol, anti-anxiety medications, or sleep aids), it produces additive drowsiness that can become problematic.

People with autoimmune conditions are generally advised to avoid melatonin entirely, since it stimulates immune activity. And at high doses, melatonin may have hormonal effects. Research published in Frontiers in Endocrinology notes that high-dose melatonin, particularly when combined with progesterone, can suppress ovulation. While this effect isn’t well established at typical supplement doses, it’s worth knowing if you’re trying to conceive or have concerns about reproductive hormones.

A Better Approach to Dosing

If you’re currently taking 9 mg and sleeping fine without side effects, it’s worth trying to taper down. Start by cutting your dose in half and seeing whether your sleep quality changes. Many people find that 1 to 3 mg works just as well once their sleep timing stabilizes. Take it one to two hours before your intended bedtime for the best effect.

If you’ve been taking 9 mg and still struggling to sleep, more melatonin isn’t the answer. The supplement is best suited for circadian rhythm issues like jet lag, shift work, or a sleep schedule that’s drifted too late. For general insomnia, behavioral strategies like keeping a consistent wake time, limiting screen light in the evening, and avoiding caffeine after midday tend to produce better long-term results than any dose of melatonin.
