Signs of Illness Without a Fever

Why Temperatures Shift Throughout the Day
If you’ve been checking your baby’s temperature multiple times and getting slightly different numbers each time, that’s normal. Body temperature follows a daily rhythm controlled by the brain’s internal clock. It dips to its lowest point in the early morning hours, gradually rises through the afternoon, and plateaus between about 2 and 8 PM before falling again overnight.
In children, this daily swing can be close to 2°F. So the same healthy baby might read 97.5°F before breakfast and 99.3°F after an active afternoon, and neither number indicates illness. Activity, bundling in warm clothing, a recent warm bath, or a big feeding can also nudge the reading up temporarily. If you’re monitoring a borderline temperature, try to take readings at consistent times and under similar conditions to get a meaningful comparison.
