The key is that it shouldn’t feel like punishment, and it shouldn’t lead to binge eating afterward, which can cancel out any benefits.

If your goal is weight loss, a 24-hour fast creates a calorie deficit that’s hard to fully compensate for in your other meals, which is why it works for many people. If your goal is metabolic health, the insulin sensitization and fat-burning window offer genuine advantages. And if you’re simply curious, a single 24-hour fast is a low-risk experiment for a healthy person. The worst likely outcome is a rough afternoon and an early bedtime.
