A dental bridge is considered “permanent” in the sense that it’s cemented into your mouth and only a dentist can remove it. But it doesn’t last forever. Most dental bridges survive at least 5 to 7 years, and with good oral hygiene, many last well over 10 years.
What “Permanent” Actually Means
Dentists use the word “permanent” to distinguish fixed bridges from removable options like partial dentures, which you take out daily to clean. A fixed bridge is bonded to your existing teeth (or implants) with dental cement, so it stays in place while you eat, talk, and sleep. You brush it like a natural tooth. But the cement can wear down over time, the supporting teeth underneath can develop decay, and the bridge materials themselves gradually break down with years of use.
A large clinical meta-analysis found that 92% of fixed bridges survived at 10 years, and about 75% were still in place at 15 years. When including bridges that were technically still in the mouth but had developed problems needing replacement, those numbers dropped to 87% at 10 years and 69% at 15 years. So while a bridge is a long-term restoration, planning for eventual replacement is realistic.
Four Types of Fixed Bridges
All four types are cemented or bonded in place, but they differ in how they anchor to your mouth.
- Traditional bridge: Crowns are placed on the natural teeth on both sides of the gap, with one or more artificial teeth spanning the space between them. This is the most common type.
- Cantilever bridge: A crown anchors to a natural tooth on only one side, and the artificial tooth extends over the gap without support on the other end. This works when there’s only one neighboring tooth available.
- Maryland bridge: Instead of full crowns, small metal wings are bonded to the backs of your neighboring teeth. It’s less invasive because the dentist doesn’t need to reshape the anchor teeth as much.
- Implant-supported bridge: The bridge sits on dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone rather than on natural teeth. Implants can last 15 years or more and have a 10-year success rate around 97%, making this the longest-lasting option available.
How Long Each Option Typically Lasts
Traditional bridges anchored to natural teeth generally need replacement somewhere in the 5 to 15 year range, depending on how well you care for them and how much stress they endure. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that with excellent oral hygiene, some bridges can last a lifetime, though that’s the exception rather than the rule.
Implant-supported bridges tend to outlast traditional ones. Because implants fuse directly with the jawbone, they don’t rely on neighboring teeth that might develop decay or weaken over time. Even though implants cost more upfront, they typically age better and don’t need replacement as often. For many people, the long-term math favors implants when they’re a viable option.
What Shortens a Bridge’s Life
The supporting teeth underneath the crowns are the most common weak point. Even if the bridge itself looks fine, decay can develop around or beneath the crowns, loosening the fit and compromising the whole structure. This is why cleaning around and under the bridge is so important.
Teeth grinding (bruxism) puts enormous pressure on a bridge and can cause cracks or shift it out of alignment. If you grind your teeth at night, a nightguard creates a barrier that absorbs that force. Habits like chewing ice, biting fingernails, or tearing open packaging with your teeth also accelerate wear. A diet heavy in sugar and starch promotes decay around the anchor teeth, while very hard or sticky foods can physically damage the bridge over time.
Keeping Your Bridge in Good Shape
The gap between the underside of the bridge and your gumline traps food and plaque that a regular toothbrush can’t reach. Cleaning this space is the single most important thing you can do to extend your bridge’s life. Three tools make this manageable:
- Floss threaders: These guide regular dental floss underneath the bridge so you can slide it back and forth along the gum surface.
- Interdental brushes: Small, thin brushes that fit into tight spaces between the bridge and gums to scrub away plaque your floss misses.
- Water flossers: A pressurized stream of water rinses debris from under the bridge and stimulates the gums. Many people find these the easiest tool to use consistently.
A good daily routine means threading floss under the bridge first, following up with an interdental brush, and finishing with a water flosser to rinse away anything left behind. Regular dental checkups let your dentist spot early signs of decay or cement breakdown before they become bigger problems.
Signs Your Bridge May Need Attention
A bridge that’s starting to fail doesn’t always announce itself with dramatic pain. The early signs are often subtle: sensitivity or mild pain near the bridge, especially when chewing. You might notice the bridge feels slightly loose or shifts when you press on it with your tongue. Swollen or bleeding gums around the anchor teeth can signal decay or infection underneath. Difficulty chewing foods that didn’t bother you before, or visible chips and cracks in the bridge material, are clearer signals that something needs to be addressed.
Catching these signs early matters. A small area of decay on a supporting tooth can sometimes be treated while keeping the bridge intact, but advanced decay may mean losing the anchor tooth entirely, which changes your replacement options. If your bridge feels different in any way, getting it checked sooner rather than later gives you the most choices for what comes next.
